Beneath the Golden Fields

The ground shook again.

Not violently.

Not enough to knock anyone off their feet.

Just enough for every wooden cup on the table to rattle.

Silence fell over the village hall.

Outside, the endless sea of golden wheat bowed in perfect unison, as if paying respect to an unseen king.

Kai swallowed.

"Please tell me this is normal."

"No."

Zephyr's answer came far too quickly.

"It isn't."

The villagers exchanged nervous glances.

Elder Rowan slowly stood from his chair.

"It started three nights ago," he admitted. "Every sunset, the fields become like this."

"You never mentioned earthquakes," Kai said.

"We thought they were unrelated."

Kai looked at him in disbelief.

"The living wheat and mysterious earthquakes seemed unrelated?"

"When you say it out loud..."

"It sounds ridiculous."

The elder sighed.

"Yes."

Kai rubbed his forehead.

His first real freelance job was somehow becoming stranger than a dragon attack.

The tremors stopped as suddenly as they had begun.

Outside, the wheat slowly returned upright.

The whispers faded into the evening breeze.

Zephyr walked toward the window.

His usually lazy expression had disappeared.

He stared across the fields without saying a word.

Kai noticed.

Since meeting him, Zephyr had joked about everything.

This was the first time he looked genuinely focused.

"What is it?" Kai asked quietly.

Zephyr didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into the air and lightly tapped an invisible point.

A faint ripple spread through space like a pebble dropped into still water.

"Huh..."

"You found something?"

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

Zephyr glanced back.

"The barrier beneath this village is damaged."

Kai frowned.

"What barrier?"

"The one keeping whatever is underground..."

He paused.

"...Underground."

Kai's expression stiffened.

"I don't like how you said that."

"You shouldn't."

That night, Elder Rowan led them to the edge of the fields.

The moon hung low above Greenhollow Village, bathing the wheat in silver light.

Everything looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Kai took one cautious step forward.

Nothing happened.

Another step.

Still nothing.

"I think we're fi—"

A whisper interrupted him.

"...Help..."

Kai froze.

"Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?" Elder Rowan asked.

"Someone just spoke."

The elder shook his head.

"I didn't hear anything."

Kai looked at Zephyr.

"I heard it."

Zephyr nodded.

"So did I."

Another whisper drifted through the field.

"...Wake..."

This time it came from below.

Not ahead.

Not behind.

Below.

Kai instinctively stepped backward.

"You mean to tell me the ground is talking now?"

"It appears so."

"I miss when my biggest problem was tuition."

"You'll miss it even more tomorrow."

Kai didn't ask what that meant.

He wasn't sure he wanted to know.

Zephyr crouched and placed his palm on the soil.

The earth glowed faintly beneath his hand.

Ancient symbols appeared for only a heartbeat before disappearing again.

Kai caught a glimpse of them.

Unlike the symbols from the Divine Contract App, these looked... older.

Far older.

They didn't resemble any language he had ever seen.

"What are those?"

"Old writing."

"How old?"

Zephyr smiled faintly.

"Older than the gods."

Kai laughed.

Then he realized Zephyr wasn't joking.

"...That's impossible."

"Most interesting things are."

Before Kai could ask another question, the ground split open.

A narrow crack stretched across the field.

Golden light poured from beneath the earth.

The wheat nearest the crack immediately bent toward it, as though feeding on the light.

Elder Rowan stumbled backward.

"It wasn't this large before!"

The crack widened.

Warm air rushed upward.

Kai expected lava.

Or monsters.

Instead...

Flowers bloomed.

Hundreds of tiny golden flowers erupted from the earth within seconds.

The entire field transformed into a glowing garden.

Kai blinked.

"...That's actually beautiful."

Zephyr didn't smile.

"It shouldn't be."

The flowers began turning.

One after another.

Until every blossom faced Zephyr.

Not the moon.

Not the wind.

Zephyr.

The air grew heavy.

A gentle voice echoed from beneath the earth.

"...Welcome back..."

Kai's blood ran cold.

"Who said that?"

No answer came.

Only silence.

Then every flower closed at once.

Darkness returned.

The next morning, Greenhollow Village buzzed with rumors.

Some claimed they had seen lights dancing beneath the fields.

Others insisted they heard singing during the night.

Children treated it like an adventure.

Adults looked terrified.

Kai and Zephyr sat outside the village inn eating breakfast.

Kai stared at a bowl of porridge.

"I don't think we're dealing with cursed wheat anymore."

"We never were."

"You knew that?"

"I suspected."

Kai pointed his spoon at him.

"You really enjoy saying that."

"It saves time."

"It saves explanations."

"Exactly."

Kai sighed.

"You are the worst partner."

"I've been told that."

"Eight hundred and forty-seven times?"

Zephyr looked impressed.

"You remembered."

"I don't think I'll ever forget."

For the first time since they met, Zephyr laughed.

It wasn't loud.

Just a quiet chuckle.

Yet somehow it made him seem... younger.

Almost ordinary.

Almost.

Kai noticed something else.

Whenever Zephyr laughed, the birds nearby stopped singing.

Not out of fear.

Out of attention.

As though nature itself had paused to listen.

The moment passed quickly.

The birds resumed chirping.

Zephyr finished his breakfast and stood.

"We should investigate the center of the field."

Kai groaned.

"Can we investigate somewhere that doesn't whisper?"

"No."

"Can we investigate somewhere that doesn't crack open?"

"No."

"Can we investigate somewhere with normal plants?"

Zephyr considered it.

"...Probably not."

Kai sighed dramatically and stood.

"My life has officially become a horror novel."

As the two walked toward the fields, neither noticed the woman watching them from the hill overlooking the village.

She wore a white cloak embroidered with silver symbols.

In her hand rested a leather-bound journal bearing the crest of the Divine Oversight Bureau.

She wrote a single sentence before closing the book.

Subject Zephyr has begun moving again.

Observation Level increased to Crimson.

Then she disappeared in a flash of silver light.
