THE WINTER ROSE

Winter arrived quietly at Rosewood Academy.

Unlike spring, when the school was filled with colors and new beginnings, winter brought a different kind of beauty.

The trees became bare.

The mornings became colder.

The once-busy garden became peaceful and still.

Yet, somehow, Kai found himself visiting the garden more often than before.

Maybe it was because the garden reminded him that not everything beautiful needed to be loud.

Some things grew quietly.

Some things survived even when the world became colder.

“Kai.”

He turned around.

Eli stood at the garden entrance, holding two cups of hot chocolate.

“You’re going to freeze.”

Kai looked at him.

“I’m fine.”

Eli walked closer and handed him one of the cups.

“You always say that.”

Kai accepted it.

“And you always worry.”

Eli smiled.

“Maybe someone has to.”

They sat together on the wooden bench near the roses.

The garden looked completely different from the one they had created during spring.

The bright flowers were fewer now.

Most plants were resting, waiting for warmer days.

But among the bushes was something unusual.

A single rose.

White.

Small.

Beautiful.

Kai stared at it.

“It’s still blooming.”

Eli followed his gaze.

“Even in winter.”

Kai reached toward it carefully.

“Most flowers disappear when the weather changes.”

Eli smiled.

“Maybe this one refuses to give up.”

Kai looked at the rose.

“Or maybe it just doesn’t know how to stop growing.”

For a while, they sat quietly.

The silence between them had changed.

Before, silence meant Kai was alone.

Now, silence meant he was comfortable.

After the rumors at school, something between them had become stronger.

They were more honest.

Kai no longer pretended everything was fine when it wasn’t.

And Eli no longer hid when something bothered him.

At least…

Kai thought he didn’t.

One afternoon, Kai noticed something.

Eli was smiling less.

Not completely.

Eli was still kind.

Still helpful.

Still the person everyone depended on.

But Kai noticed the small things.

The tired look in his eyes.

The moments when he became quiet.

The way he stared at the garden when he thought nobody was watching.

“You’re hiding something.”

Eli looked surprised.

“What?”

Kai looked at him.

“You heard me.”

Eli laughed softly.

“Since when did you become good at noticing things?”

Kai looked away.

“Since I met you.”

The smile on Eli’s face disappeared slightly.

Not because he was upset.

Because the words meant something.

They walked through the garden.

Finally, Eli stopped near the old rose bushes.

“My parents used to love flowers.”

Kai looked at him.

“Used to?”

Eli nodded.

“When I was younger, we had a garden at home.”

He touched one of the branches.

“My mother grew roses. She said every flower had a story.”

Kai listened quietly.

“She always told me that roses weren’t special because they were perfect.”

Eli smiled sadly.

“They were special because they survived.”

Kai noticed the change in his voice.

“What happened?”

Eli looked down.

“My family moved away after my parents separated.”

Kai stayed quiet.

“I had to leave the garden behind.”

For the first time, Kai saw something different in Eli.

Not the cheerful boy everyone knew.

Not the person who always helped others.

Just Eli.

Someone who had lost something important.

“I’m sorry.”

Eli shook his head.

“Don’t be.”

“But you miss it.”

A small smile appeared.

“Yeah.”

The wind passed through the garden.

The white rose moved gently.

“I think that’s why I liked your idea.”

Kai looked at him.

“My idea?”

“The rose project.”

Eli smiled.

“You wanted people to leave their dreams here.”

He looked around.

“You created a place where memories could grow.”

Kai felt his chest tighten.

Because he had never thought of it that way.

He only wanted people to feel less alone.

“You helped me too.”

Kai looked surprised.

“How?”

Eli looked at him.

“Before I met you, I thought I had to always be the happy person.”

A pause.

“The person who makes everyone else feel better.”

Kai understood.

Because he knew that feeling.

Being afraid to show weakness.

“But with you…”

Eli smiled.

“I don’t feel like I have to pretend.”

Kai looked away.

The cold air suddenly felt warmer.

A few days later, the school announced a winter charity event.

Students were asked to create displays showing kindness and hope.

Everyone expected Eli and Kai to participate.

After all, the rose project had become famous around the school.

“You want to do another project?”

Kai asked.

Eli smiled.

“Why not?”

“Because you’re tired.”

Eli looked surprised.

Kai continued.

“You don’t always have to do everything.”

Eli became quiet.

Then he smiled.

“You really have changed.”

Kai frowned.

“What?”

“You used to never say things like that.”

Kai looked at the roses.

“Maybe I learned from someone.”

The winter event became another memory.

But this time, Kai was different.

He was no longer just standing beside Eli.

He was standing with him.

That evening, they returned to the garden.

The snow had begun falling.

Small white pieces covered the ground.

The winter rose remained.

“Do you think it’s strange?”

Eli asked.

“What?”

“That something so delicate can survive something so cold.”

Kai looked at the flower.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because sometimes the things that look fragile are stronger than people expect.”

Eli smiled.

“You really like flowers.”

Kai nodded.

“They make sense.”

“How?”

“They don’t apologize for being what they are.”

Eli looked at him.

Then quietly said:

“I hope you never apologize for being yourself either.”

Kai looked at him.

For a moment, the world felt completely silent.

The snow.

The garden.

The winter rose.

Everything felt like it had stopped.

That night:

[Chatroom]

Eli:Did you make it home?

Kai:Yes.

Eli:Good.

Kai:Why do you always ask?

Eli:Because I care.

Kai stared at the message.

Then typed:

Kai:I know.

Eli:You know?

Kai:Yes.

Eli:How?

Kai:Because you show it.

Eli did not reply immediately.

Then:

Eli:Goodnight, Kai.

Kai:Goodnight, Eli.

Outside, the winter rose continued to bloom.

Quietly.

Bravely.

Proof that even the coldest seasons could not stop something meant to grow.
