Chapter 4: The Shadow of the Ghost

The bullet ripped through the air, aimed directly at Alexander’s chest.

In a fraction of a second, Clara’s cold aura transformed into something predatory. She stepped into Alexander's space, grabbed his tuxedo lapels, and forcefully yanked his massive frame downward. The bullet hissed past his ear, shattering a mirror behind him.

Before Alexander could even process that a civilian archivist had just thrown him to the ground, Clara reached into her hair. With a fluid, blindingly fast motion, she pulled out her silver hairpin. She twisted the base, revealing a micro-tipped titanium blade coated in a fast-acting neurotoxin.

An assassin charged through the smoke, his rifle raised. Clara slipped beneath his guard with terrifying agility, her movements resembling a lethal, silent dance. She drove the pin directly into a precise nerve cluster in his neck. The man’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed instantly, his nervous system completely paralyzed.

She caught his falling submachine gun before it hit the floor, spun around, and fired a precise three-round burst. Two more assassins dropping from the rafters fell dead into the smoke.

Alexander watched from the floor, his dark eyes wide with a mixture of shock and profound fascination. This wasn't the reaction of a frightened historian. Her stance, her absolute lack of fear, and her execution-style precision were legendary.

"Ghost," Alexander breathed, his voice a gravelly whisper.

The name echoed through the underworld. Ghost was a phantom—a legendary hacker who double-functioned as a ghost assassin, known for leaving no digital trace and clearing out entire squads without making a sound.

Clara didn't acknowledge him. Her smart-lens contacts blinked rapidly, projecting a digital layout of the building directly onto her retinas. "The primary exit is compromised," she said, her voice dropping into a deep, authoritative tone. "Six hostiles are advancing from the west corridor. Follow me if you want to live, Sovereign.

"Hearing his mafia title escape her lips confirmed his suspicion. She knew exactly who he was.

Three more Black Hawk gunmen burst through the smoke, flashing their weapons. Clara threw an empty champagne bucket with pinpoint accuracy, striking the first man in the face. In the split second of distraction, she swept the legs of the second gunman and used his body as a shield as the third assassin opened fire.

Alexander quickly recovered, raising his own pistol. Operating with identical lethal instincts, the CEO and the archivist moved in perfect, terrifying tandem. Alexander shot the remaining gunman through the forehead, while Clara finished off the spluttering man on the floor.

Within two minutes, the immediate threat was neutralized. The ballroom was dead silent, save for the blaring fire alarms and the crackle of burning decorations.

Clara tossed the submachine gun aside, completely unfazed by the carnage. She casually wiped a drop of stray blood off her cheek with the back of her hand, her expression returning to its usual, ice-cold detachment. She reached down, picked up her silver hairpin, and slid it back into her hair, pinning her bun back into a perfect, neat arrangement.

"Your security is pathetic, Mr. Vance," she said coldly, reverting instantly to her civilian voice.

Before Alexander could grab her arm to demand answers, Clara turned and melted seamlessly into the thick, black smoke of the service exit. By the time Marcus and the rest of the Sovereign Syndicate reinforcement teams breached the doors, the legendary Ghost had completely vanished into the rainy night.

Alexander stood amidst the bodies, his chest heaving. He looked down at the weapon she had discarded, a slow, dark, and intensely possessive grin spreading across his face.

"I found you," he whispered into the smoke.
