The Doors We Open

The chaotic dust of Pocheon Village finally began to settle as dawn broke. After a grueling, sleepless night of raw, high-stakes reporting, the SBC team finally packed up their equipment and returned to headquarters in Seoul.

Inside the bustling newsroom, the crew let out a collective sigh of relief. Clapping and cheering echoed through the department. "Great job, everyone! Have a good rest, you all worked incredibly hard!"

Ji-won slumped into a chair, rubbing her tired eyes. Suddenly, the young girl from the bus walked over, crossing her arms. "Ji-won, you actually did okay out there. I honestly thought you were just a useless newbie lagging behind, but I guess I was wrong."

Ji-won glanced down at the girl’s lanyard. The ID badge clearly read: Level 1 - Junior (Age 24).

Ji-won offered a polite, professional smile on the outside. But internally, she rolled her eyes. Kid, I'm twenty-eight with years of blood, sweat, and tears in this industry. Who do you think you're talking to?

Too exhausted to waste her breath pulling rank, Ji-won just nodded, grabbed her jacket, and walked away.

The moment Ji-won was out of earshot, a senior male producer smacked the junior girl upside the head with a rolled-up script. "Yaaa! You little idiot, why are you talking to a senior like that?"

The girl rubbed her head, blinking in confusion. "Huh? Senior? Who, Ji-won? She was just assisting with the report copy, so I thought she was a rookie..."

"Not everyone who works quietly is a junior like you, you dummy!" the producer snapped, shaking his head. "She didn't just 'assist.' She’s our new Senior On-Air Field Correspondent. She’s a veteran who has covered literal war zones and political scandals. Show some respect!"

The junior girl's jaw dropped, her face turning a violent shade of crimson as absolute embarrassment washed over her.

Meanwhile, back at her apartment, Ji-won collapsed onto her bed after a hot bath. She stared at the ceiling, but no matter how hard she tried to sleep, her mind kept drifting back to the disaster site. Specifically, to the image of Dr. Kang Min-jun. She remembered the fierce determination in his sharp eyes, the way he fearlessly volunteered to dive into the danger zone, and how effortlessly commanding he was.

Suddenly, she vigorously shook her head, slapping her own cheeks.

"Ji-won, what is wrong with you?" she muttered to herself, pulling the blanket over her face. "We just met by total coincidence. For all I know, a high-class guy like him is probably going to reject this marriage anyway. Why am I being so delulu? Go to sleep!"

At the exact same time, across the city, the water from a steaming shower cascaded over Min-jun's tense shoulders. He leaned his forehead against the cool bathroom tile, trying to wash away the exhaustion of the trauma surgeries.

But behind his closed eyes, he kept seeing the fierce, focused expression of Han Ji-won standing in front of the flashing camera lights, holding her ground in the swirling dust.

As he turned off the water, his mind drifted back to the conversation he had with his mother just a few days ago.

"You can't honestly expect me to just marry someone blindly to continue the family generation," Min-jun had told his mother coldly, adjusting his watch.

His mother had exhaled a slow, heavy sigh. "I am not asking you to just continue a bloodline, Min-jun. You are at an age where you need a partner. You can’t just roam from the hospital to an empty apartment forever. You need someone by your side, son." She paused, her voice softening with deep, painful empathy. "Or... is this because you still love Min-seo?"

The name struck a chord, making Min-jun freeze.

"Mom," Min-jun's voice had gone completely icy. "It has been ten years since she left Korea. She's gone."

"Then why haven't you forgotten her?" his mother pressed gently, stepping closer to him. "You can lie to the world, but you can't lie to your mother. Trust me on this, son. The girl I am talking about is special. She is waiting for the person God has aligned for her. Trust that if one door closes, a much bigger one opens right in front of you. The door is right there in your line of sight. You just need to step through and see if she is worth it."

At present day

A month flew by.

With no texts, no phone calls, and absolutely no connection, Ji-won and Min-jun remained firmly on their own parallel paths, buried deep in their respective demanding careers.

Until one evening, their families decided enough was enough.

Ji-won was in the middle of a heavy editing session at the SBC newsroom when her phone buzzed. It was a message from Nurse Min:

> [Ms. Han, your grandmother is at the Orchid Pavilion restaurant. She urgently requests that you meet her here right now. Please don't be late!]

>

At the exact same time, in the middle of writing post-op charts at the hospital, Min-jun’s phone lit up with a stern text from his mother:

> [Orchid Pavilion. Private Room 3. Your grandfather and Elder Han are waiting. Step away from the scalpel and get here immediately.]

>

Because both of them were slammed with late-night emergencies, they both ended up running catastrophically late.

The glass doors of the luxury restaurant flew open.

Ji-won sprinted into the lobby from one side, panting for air, her hair slightly messy. She was still wearing her rugged cargo pants, her dark SBC jacket, and her official blue SBC Press ID Card was still clutched tightly in her hand alongside her recording tablet.

At that exact microsecond, Min-jun charged through the entrance from the opposite side. He was still wearing his crisp hospital slacks, a wrinkled button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and his plastic Hospital Surgeon ID Badge was dangling carelessly from his fingers along with his stethoscope sticking out of his bag.

They both stopped dead in their tracks.

Standing in the center of the elegant, quiet restaurant lobby, covered in the stress and sweat of their real-world jobs, the veteran journalist and the elite surgeon stared at each other in shock.
