Arjun grips the back of your seat, his knuckles white. He keeps his eyes glued to the dark perimeter beyond the reach of the floodlights.
"listen to me everyone," he says, his voice low and urgent. "Stopping here is a gamble. We don't know if these things are attracted to sound, or if there’s a swarm waiting just out of sight. If we stop, we’re anchored. If we get swarmed, we lose the bus—our only protection."
You look at the flickering neon sign of the shop, then back at the others. Riya is shivering, and the driver looks like he’s on the verge of a total breakdown.
You know the reality of the situation—if you keep driving into the unknown without food, water, or basic first aid, you’re just prolonging the inevitable.
"We can't just keep going blindly," you counter, your voice firm and resolute. "We have no supplies. If we run out of fuel or get trapped in the dark further down the road without any gear, we're dead anyway. We need to scavenge now while the lighting is in our favor."
You turn to the group, meeting their panicked gazes. "If we leave now and run into more of them, we’ll be empty-handed and exhausted. We need to clear that station, grab what we can, and get back on the road. We move as a team."
Min-ho nods slowly, pulling a heavy-duty wrench from under the driver’s seat. He rolls his shoulders, preparing himself. "She’s right. Calculated risk is better than slow starvation. I'll take the lead on the sweep. Arjun, you watch the perimeter. Luna, you and Riya hit the store—grab the essentials: water, non-perishables, medical supplies. Chris, you stay by the door and keep the bus engine idling. If you hear anything—even a twig snapping—you honk that horn twice. That’s our signal to bolt."
Chris looks terrified, but he nods, scrambling into the driver’s seat as the current driver hesitantly climbs out, wielding a tire iron.
The bus doors hiss open. The air outside is cold and smells faintly of ozone and gasoline. The silence of the station is absolute, save for the buzz of the overhead lights.
The plan had been working with terrifying efficiency. Following Min-ho’s instructions, the group moved like a well-oiled machine.
You and Riya had cleared the aisles of the convenience store, tossing canned goods, bottled water, and first-aid kits into duffel bags, while Arjun and Min-ho scouted the perimeter.
The bus was already filled with enough supplies to last you days, a small victory in a crumbling world.
"Just a few more things!" you whispered, urgency sharpening your focus. You were reaching for a rack of batteries and flashlights when a sharp clatter echoed through the silent shop.
Riya had frozen, her face pale, a plastic water bottle rolling across the linoleum floor. The sound, amplified by the dead silence of the night, seemed to ring out like a gunshot.
Outside, the reaction was immediate. From the dark tree line bordering the station, the silhouettes began to stir.
They weren't fast, but they were relentless. A low, collective moan drifted across the pavement, and as the ambient noise caught their attention, more figures detached themselves from the shadows.
The trickle of monsters turned into a steady, dragging flow, all of them turning their hollow eyes toward the humming neon lights of the station.
