Ep.5

James' POV

9:30 PM

The mansion was quiet.

Exactly how I preferred it.

I walked out of my office after another fourteen-hour workday.

A servant approached carefully.

"Boss..."

"What."

"Madam skipped dinner."

I didn't stop walking.

"So?"

"She only had coffee this morning."

...

"Where."

"The library."

I changed direction.

Not because I cared.

A sick wife would become a distraction.

Nothing more.

The library lights were still on.

She sat in the corner by the window.

One lamp.

One blanket.

Three books stacked beside her.

She didn't even notice me.

I stood there for a moment.

"You planning to starve."

She looked up.

"No."

"Then eat."

"I'm reading."

"..."

"I'll eat later."

I walked closer.

"You've been saying 'later' all day."

She closed her book.

"And you've been ordering me around all day."

Silence.

Neither of us looked away.

Finally—

"I'm not one of your men."

Her voice stayed calm.

"So stop giving me orders."

I answered without emotion.

"You're in my house."

She stood up.

"And I'm your wife."

The words sounded bitter.

"Not your employee."

Another silence.

I stepped aside.

"Fine."

I turned toward the door.

"Don't eat."

I left.

Kate's POV

Why does he always talk like that?

Two words.

Three words.

Always like an order.

I sighed and looked at the untouched books.

My stomach growled.

Great.

Now I was hungry.

I closed the novel and headed toward the kitchen myself.

No servants.

No maids.

Just me.

The kitchen was enormous.

I found eggs, vegetables and rice.

Simple.

Fifteen minutes later...

The smell of fried rice filled the room.

I was placing it on a plate when a deep voice came from behind me.

"You cook."

I didn't turn around.

"You have eyes."

Silence.

I continued serving myself.

He walked closer.

"I asked the chefs."

"I wasn't hungry."

"You are now."

"I changed my mind."

Another silence.

I picked up my plate.

As I walked past him—

He spoke again.

"...Make another."

I stopped.

Slowly turned around.

"For yourself?"

He nodded once.

I stared at him for a long second.

"You have five chefs."

"I asked you."

His tone was as cold as ever.

I frowned.

"No."

His expression didn't change.

"No?"

"I'm not your personal chef."

Another long silence.

Then he simply said,

"...Fine."

He opened the refrigerator himself.

Took out bottled water.

Walked away without another word.

I watched him leave.

What... was that?

For the first time...

The argument ended without either of us winning.

And neither of us apologized.
