Breaking doesn’t happen in one day.
It happens slowly.
I remember... there was a time when I would wake up late and not feel guilty about it.
I said whatever was in my heart without thinking.
"People will talk" — that sentence didn’t even exist in my dictionary.
I was the girl who would fall, laugh loudly, and say, "See? I got up again."
Then I don’t know when it started...
First someone said, "You talk too much."
So I went quiet.
Then someone said, "Don’t laugh so much, it looks weird."
So I laughed less.
Then one day I made a mistake. A small one.
And everyone remembered it. Even when I forgot, the world didn’t let me.
One morning you wake up
and you realize...
the girl who never made excuses
now has a hundred excuses.
The girl who never thought "what will people say"
now thinks before every step.
People think you’ve changed.
They don’t see the pieces.
They don’t know that a person doesn’t break in half...
they break completely.
Into tiny little pieces.
That no one even notices.
One piece broke the day my own people didn’t understand me.
One piece broke that night when I needed to cry but sleep came instead.
One piece broke that time when my heart said "speak" and my mind said "let it go."
And the worst part?
If you say, "Let me cry, give me strength"
people say, "These things happen. Don’t cry."
"Be strong."
"Move on."
They see you crying.
But they don’t ask why you’re crying.
That’s why you learn.
You learn to smile.
You learn to say "I’m fine."
You learn to be the first one up making tea for everyone.
That’s why you break while smiling.
Because if you cry
people will ask, "What happened?"
And you won’t have an answer.
Because there wasn’t one reason.
There were a hundred reasons.
Small ones.
That together became one big "everything."
You see, people notice the tears.
But they don’t notice the nights you stayed awake pretending to sleep.
They notice when you go quiet.
But they don’t notice all the times you swallowed your words.
They notice when you cancel plans.
But they don’t notice how much courage it took to even say yes.
And then one day you understand...
Breaking wasn’t bad.
Because in breaking, I learned empathy.
I learned how to put a bandage on someone else’s wound
because I knew exactly where it hurt.
I learned to listen without fixing.
To sit in silence with someone who’s hurting.
To not say "it’s nothing" when for them it was everything.
Breaking taught me that healing isn’t loud.
It’s quiet.
It’s choosing water over cold drinks when your throat hurts.
It’s choosing rest over proving a point.
It’s choosing yourself, even on the days you feel like pieces.
So yes, I broke.
Slowly. Quietly. Completely.
But in those pieces, I found a version of me
who could feel everything
and still choose kindness.
That is empathy.
That is what breaking gave me.
