Episode 5

After P.E., I came to a conclusion.

Volleyballs are evil.

And Ren Akiyama looked annoyingly good while saving people.

Life was unfair.

"You're staring again," Yuna whispered.

"I am not."

"You've been looking at him for the past three minutes."

"That's because he's standing in my line of sight."

"He is literally behind you."

"..."

She had me there.

The final bell rang, and I immediately packed my bag.

Escaping social interaction had become significantly harder ever since Yuna entered my life.

"Mina! Wait!"

Too late.

She had spotted me.

"We're having a study group at my house this weekend."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Ren is coming."

"...Continue."

Yuna smirked.

Traitor.

"Kaito will be there too. Of course he would be there , he lives there as well.what is wrong with me today" she smiled.

"I seriously don't know as well."

For some reason, that disappointed me.

"I heard that," Kaito said from behind us.

Why did everyone suddenly have excellent hearing?

"Anyway," Yuna continued, "there's no escaping. Mom said I should invite my friends over."

"FriendS? Plural?"

"Well, friend."

That somehow made me feel better.

"Besides," she added, "you need help."

"I don't need help."

"Mina, you thought Australia was in Europe."

"It was one time!"

"It happened twice."

"Geography is hard!"

"YOU LIVE ON EARTH!"

The entire class went silent.

I slowly sat back down.

"...I can explain."

"No, you can't," Kaito replied.

Even Ren was trying—and failing—to hide his smile.

Wait.

Ren Akiyama was smiling.

I had witnessed a miracle.

"See?" Yuna said. "You have to come now."

"I'll think about it."

"That's Mina language for yes."

"It is not."

"It absolutely is."

Before I could argue, Ms. Yuri entered the classroom.

"I almost forgot to announce this."

The room quieted down.

"Our annual school dance will be held in exactly two months."

The class erupted into cheers.

Meanwhile, I felt my soul leave my body.

No.

Absolutely not.

School dances were for attractive people.

People with social skills.

People who knew how to dance.

I possessed none of those qualities.

"Mina's going," Yuna announced proudly.

"I am not."

"She absolutely is."

"I would rather fight a bear."

"Aren't bears illegal to fight?"

"Then I'll fight two."

Kaito laughed.

Actually laughed.

"You can't seriously hate dances that much."

"I've successfully avoided them for four years."

Ren suddenly looked up from his desk.

"You've never been to one?"

The fact that Ren Akiyama knew I existed enough to ask questions about my life was deeply concerning.

"No."

"Why?"

I opened my mouth.

Then closed it.

Then opened it again.

"...Because if I dance, people could get hurt."

The room was silent.

"That's ridiculous," Ren said.

"You haven't seen me dance."

Yuna slammed her hands onto my desk.

"Perfect! Then we'll teach you!"

"We?"

"Me."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"YES."

I looked around the classroom.

Kaito looked amused.

Ren looked curious.

Yuna looked determined.

Somehow...

I had a feeling my peaceful high school life was officially over and I'm starting to feel like the main character in a novel.
