Chapter 5: Shadows at Pier 9

The heavy silence inside the cavernous warehouse was deafening, broken only by the rhythmic drumming of rain against the corrugated iron roof. Soo-Jin stood frozen, her gun remaining leveled at the chest of the man standing before her.

"Director Min..." she repeated, her voice barely a whisper above the storm outside. "I watched the official report. I saw the casualty list from the Macau operation. You were classified as Killed in Action."

Director Min took a slow, deliberate step out of the shadows. The harsh fluorescent light above revealed deep scars across his jawline and eyes that had grown sunken and tired, yet sharp as steel. He reached into his coat, and for a split second, Soo-Jin's finger tightened on her trigger. But instead of a weapon, he pulled out an old silver pocket watch—the same watch she had seen him carry for a decade.

"A dead man is the only one who can move without leaving tracks, Soo-Jin," Min said, his voice gravelly. "If NISC knew I survived that night in Macau, they wouldn't have just come after me. They would have scrubbed everyone tied to my division—including you."

Soo-Jin slowly lowered her firearm, though every tactical instinct screamed at her to remain on high alert. "The message you sent... you said there’s a mole at the top level of NISC. Who is it?"

Min walked over to a rusted metal table, leaning his hands against the cold surface. "Three years ago, my unit uncovered a black-market syndicate operating under the codename 'Phantom Veil'. They weren't just smuggling hardware; they were buying top-secret NISC intelligence. I thought I was closing in on their leader, but the Macau operation was a setup. Someone inside headquarters leaked our drop location to the syndicate's hit squad."

"And the encrypted cipher I retrieved from the Gangnam safehouse?" Soo-Jin asked, stepping closer.

"It contains the full transaction ledger of Phantom Veil," Min replied, looking directly into her eyes. "It lists every bribe, every leaked file, and every compromised agent over the last five years. Whoever holds that cipher holds the power to burn NISC to the ground. That is why they sent mercenaries to kill you tonight. You weren't supposed to make it out of Gangnam alive."

### **Part II: The Betrayal Unveiled**

Soo-Jin pulled the encrypted drive from her inner coat pocket, staring at the small metallic device. It suddenly felt impossibly heavy.

"I tried to contact control when the jamming started," she said, her eyebrows knitting together. "The frequency was intercepted from within the internal network. Only Deputy Director Kang has direct authority to override tactical frequencies during an active field operation."

Min nodded grimly. "Kang has been building his political network for years. But he isn't working alone. The access codes required to wipe the safehouse CCTV footage in real time could only come from Chief Analyst Park."

The realization hit Soo-Jin like a physical blow. Deputy Director Kang was the man who had recruited her into the agency. Chief Analyst Park was the one who had trained her in digital intelligence. The people she had trusted with her life were the ones pulling the strings behind her execution order.

"So what's our move?" Soo-Jin asked, her shock hardening into a cold, sharp resolve. "If NISC is compromised from the top down, we can't hand this drive over to local law enforcement or international security. They'll intercept it before it ever reaches a court."

"We don't hand it over," Min said, pulling a small rugged laptop from a waterproof case beneath the table. "We broadcast it. We plug this drive into the central server relay at the Incheon Telecom Tower. Once the files are uploaded to the public network, not even Kang's political allies can cover it up."

Before Soo-Jin could reply, the amber emergency light near the warehouse ceiling began to flash violently. A low, pulsing alarm echoed through the building.

The main power cut out completely, plunging the warehouse into pitch darkness.

### **Part III: The Ambush at the Docks**

"They tracked your motorcycle," Min hissed, drawing a silenced sidearm from beneath his trench coat. "They knew you’d head for the docks!"

"Impossible," Soo-Jin whispered, pressing her back against a heavy wooden crate. "I ditched the bike two blocks away!"

"It doesn't matter," Min replied calmly in the dark. "Red team on the north flank, green team on the south. They've surrounded the perimeter."

Suddenly, the glass skylights above shattered in a shower of sharp fragments. Heavy tactical ropes dropped down from the ceiling, and four armed operatives clad in night-vision gear rappelled into the warehouse. Laser sights swept across the dusty floor in crisscrossing red grids.

"Clear the floor! Target is armed!" a voice barked over a tactical radio.

Soo-Jin didn't wait for them to acquire their targets. She rolled to her left behind a steel shipping container just as a hail of bullets chewed through the wooden crates where she had been standing seconds ago.

She fired three rapid shots upward, taking out the central hanging light fixture and dropping the first rappelling operative to the ground.

"Min! To the rear exit!" she shouted over the deafening gunfire.

"Go, Soo-Jin! Get the drive to the tower!" Min yelled back, providing suppressive fire as he moved toward a stack of oil drums near the side loading dock.

"I'm not leaving you behind again!" she yelled, reloading her magazine with practiced speed.

"If they get this drive, everything we've lost means nothing!" Min shouted, throwing a flashbang grenade toward the advancing strike team.

A blinding white light and an ear-splitting bang exploded in the middle of the warehouse, disorienting the mercenaries. Taking advantage of the temporary chaos, Soo-Jin kicked open the rear metal door, bursting back into the pouring rain and salty sea air of Pier 9.

Behind her, the sound of heavy gunfire continued to roar inside the warehouse. She looked down at the encrypted drive in her hand, her jaw set tight.

She wouldn't let Min's sacrifice be in vain. She sprinted through the dark container yard toward the street, her eyes fixed on the distant glowing spire of the Incheon Telecom Tower.
