Unwanted Partners- part 1

The abandoned warehouse was silent.

Rain drummed steadily against the cracked windows while the old fluorescent lights flickered overhead. The smell of rust and damp wood filled the air.

No one spoke.

Kai leaned against a stack of wooden crates with his arms folded, watching Elena. She hadn't moved since Mia revealed the truth about the encrypted drive.

Elena slowly unzipped her backpack.

"I've never seen this before," she whispered.

Inside, beneath a laptop charger and a notebook, was a small black metal case about the size of a smartphone.

Her eyes widened.

"That's impossible."

Kai stepped closer.

"May I?"

She hesitated before handing it to him.

The case was smooth, with no buttons, no markings, and no visible way to open it.

Kai turned it over in his hands.

"It looks expensive."

"That's your observation?" Elena asked.

"What? I appreciate good craftsmanship."

She sighed.

"You joke about everything."

"It keeps life interesting."

"It also makes you impossible to take seriously."

Kai smiled.

"And yet, you're still here."

Before she could answer, Max wandered over carrying three dusty cans from an old vending machine.

"I found drinks!"

Kai accepted one.

"Please tell me they're not expired."

Max looked at the label.

"They expired... four years ago."

Kai handed it back immediately.

"I suddenly don't feel thirsty."

Max shrugged.

"Worth a try."

Even Elena let out a small laugh before quickly covering her mouth.

Kai noticed.

"There it is."

"What?"

"You smiled."

"I did not."

"You laughed."

"I absolutely didn't."

Max pointed dramatically.

"Witness! I saw it too."

Elena rolled her eyes.

"You two are unbelievable."

"And somehow still alive," Max said proudly.

Their lighthearted moment was interrupted by a sharp beep from Kai's earpiece.

"Mia?"

"I finished scanning the drive," she replied.

Kai's expression became serious.

"Tell me."

"It's encrypted with military-grade security."

Elena frowned.

"Military?"

"Not just military," Mia continued. "I've never seen encryption like this. Whoever created it didn't want anyone accessing the data."

Kai glanced at Elena.

"Any idea how it got into your backpack?"

She shook her head.

"I packed it myself this morning. It wasn't there."

"So someone planted it."

"But why me?"

No one had an answer.

Suddenly—

CRASH!

Glass shattered at the far end of the warehouse.

Everyone froze.

A metal pipe rolled across the floor.

Max whispered, "Please tell me that's just the wind."

Kai slowly drew a compact pistol from beneath his jacket.

"The wind doesn't usually throw pipes."

Footsteps echoed in the darkness.

One.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Kai looked toward the broken window.

"They found us already."

Red laser sights appeared on the walls.

One.

Five.

Ten.

More than Kai could count.

Max swallowed.

"I miss five minutes ago."

The warehouse doors burst open.

Armed soldiers flooded inside.

A tall man wearing a black tactical suit stepped forward.

Unlike the others, he carried no weapon.

He didn't need one.

His cold smile was enough.

"Kai Anderson," the stranger said calmly.

"It's been a long time."

Kai narrowed his eyes.

"I know you?"

The man smiled wider.

"You will."

He raised one finger.

"Bring me the girl."

The soldiers charged.

Kai sighed.

"I was really hoping for at least one quiet night."

He looked at Elena and grinned.

"Ready to run again?"

She stared at the approaching soldiers.

"I have a feeling this is going to become a habit."

Kai laughed.

"Now you're getting it."

The chase was far from over.
