Lost and Found Chapter 2: The First Step
Alex adjusted the straps of his backpack as he stood in front of the school's main entrance. Students walked past him in every direction, laughing, talking, and greeting one another as if they had known each other forever.
He took a deep breath.
"Okay, Alex... You've got this."
With one final glance behind him, he stepped through the front gates.
The campus was much bigger than he had imagined. Tall brick buildings surrounded a large courtyard where students sat on benches, played basketball, or simply enjoyed the warm morning sunshine.
Everything felt so unfamiliar.
Alex looked down at the schedule in his hand.
Classroom 2-B.
"...Now where is that?" he whispered.
He checked the map the school had given him, but it only made him more confused.
After walking in circles for several minutes, he sighed.
"Great... I'm already lost."
Just as he was about to ask someone for directions, a voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Are you looking for something?"
Alex turned around.
Standing a few feet away was a boy with dark brown hair, soft eyes, and headphones hanging around his neck. He looked calm, almost impossible to surprise.
Alex smiled awkwardly.
"Yeah... I'm actually trying to find Classroom 2-B."
The boy glanced at the paper before smiling.
"You're lucky."
"I am?"
"I'm going there too."
Relief spread across Alex's face.
"Really? Thank you."
"I'm Noah."
"I'm Alex."
They shook hands for the first time.
The handshake lasted only a second, but neither of them knew they would remember that moment for a very long time.
As they walked through the hallway together, Noah pointed toward different parts of the school.
"That's the library."
"The gym is behind that building."
"And the cafeteria is on the first floor."
Alex listened carefully, trying to remember everything.
"You know this school really well."
"I've been here for two years."
"I hope I'll get used to it."
"You will."
There was something reassuring about Noah's voice.
For the first time that morning, Alex felt a little less nervous.
Soon, they arrived outside Classroom 2-B.
"This is your class," Noah said.
Alex smiled.
"I guess we'll be classmates."
Before Noah could answer, the classroom door opened.
"Good morning," their teacher said with a warm smile. "You must be our new transfer student."
Alex nodded politely.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Come in."
Alex glanced at Noah one last time before following the teacher inside.
He had no idea that meeting Noah would become the most important moment of his high school life.
Alex followed the teacher into the classroom, feeling dozens of curious eyes on him. Some students smiled politely, while others whispered to each other, wondering who the new boy was. He tried to stay calm, even though his heart was beating faster with every step. As he looked around the room, he noticed Noah already sitting quietly by the window. Seeing a familiar face, even one he had met only minutes ago, made Alex feel that perhaps this new beginning would not be as lonely as he had feared.
