The following evening, the park looked no different from any other day.
Golden rays of the setting sun filtered through the trees, painting the walking paths with warm patches of light. Children chased each other across the playground, their laughter floating through the air like cheerful music. Birds hopped from branch to branch while a cool breeze carried the fresh scent of grass and blooming flowers.
Everything looked exactly the same.
Yet, for Aanya... something felt different.
As she stepped through the old iron gate, her feet slowed on their own. Without realizing it, her eyes searched only one place.
The old wooden bench.
Her heart skipped.
It was empty.
She stood there for a few seconds, staring at the deserted bench as though someone had forgotten to finish a familiar painting.
A strange heaviness settled inside her chest.
"Where is he?"
The thought slipped into her mind before she could stop it.
She frowned at herself and quickly looked away.
"Why am I even looking for him?" she muttered under her breath. "He's just... a random stranger."
Taking a slow breath, she brushed away the thought and continued walking, pretending nothing had happened.
Or at least, pretending to herself.
As she passed the playground, a burst of laughter caught her attention.
It sounded familiar.
She turned instinctively.
There he was.
Vihaan.
He was crouching beside a little boy whose paper airplane had landed in a muddy puddle. The child looked heartbroken, holding back tears as he stared at his ruined creation.
"Oh no..." Vihaan said dramatically, placing a hand over his heart. "Captain Skywing has crash-landed!"
The little boy sniffled.
"Can you fix it?"
Vihaan carefully picked up the soaked airplane and gently wiped it clean with the sleeve of his hoodie.
"Hmm..." he said, pretending to inspect the damage. "This one has fought bravely... but every hero deserves a peaceful retirement."
The little boy giggled despite himself.
"So what do we do now?" Vihaan whispered as if sharing a secret.
The child shrugged.
"We build an even better one."
With surprising skill, Vihaan folded a fresh sheet of paper into a neat airplane. Every crease was careful, every fold precise. When he finished, he handed it over with a proud smile.
"There. Captain Skywing's younger brother."
The little boy's eyes sparkled.
"Really?"
"Of course," Vihaan laughed. "And I heard he flies even faster."
The child launched the airplane into the air. It glided perfectly across the playground.
"Yay!"
His cheerful laughter echoed through the park as he ran after it.
Aanya watched the entire scene from a distance.
The corners of her lips softened without permission.
"He's exactly the same..."
Kind.
Gentle.
Childlike.
Completely unaware of how naturally he made people smile.
Almost as if he could brighten someone's day without even trying.
Just then, Vihaan looked up.
The moment his eyes found Aanya, his face lit up with unmistakable excitement.
"You came!"
He hurried toward her, nearly tripping over his own shoes before somehow catching his balance.
Aanya folded her arms, trying her best to hide the tiny smile threatening to appear.
"You weren't on the bench."
Vihaan blinked in surprise before scratching the back of his head.
"I know."
"You disappeared."
"I was recruited for an emergency mission."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Emergency mission?"
He pointed proudly toward the playground.
"Saving Captain Skywing."
Aanya couldn't help it.
A tiny laugh escaped before she quickly looked away.
Vihaan's grin widened.
"So... were you looking for me?"
Her eyes widened.
"W-What? No!"
"I was just asking because..." she cleared her throat. "...the bench was empty."
Vihaan looked toward the old wooden bench.
Then nodded thoughtfully.
"It was lonely today."
Aanya stared at him.
"Lonely?"
"Yes."
"It's a bench."
He nodded with complete seriousness.
"Everything gets lonely if nobody spends time with it."
Silence settled between them.
Aanya slowly turned toward the empty bench.
Then back at Vihaan.
For a brief moment...
She wasn't sure whether he was talking about the bench...
Or himself.
There was something hidden behind his smile.
Not sadness.
Not pain.
Just... a quiet loneliness that he never allowed anyone to notice.
Neither of them spoke after that.
Without discussing it, they simply walked back to the bench together.
Their footsteps matched naturally, as though they had done this countless times before.
They sat side by side.
Children continued playing.
Birds returned to their nests.
The golden sky slowly melted into shades of orange, pink, and soft purple.
The evening breeze gently brushed against them.
Neither felt the need to fill the silence with words.
It wasn't awkward anymore.
It felt comforting.
Peaceful.
Like the kind of silence shared between two people who didn't need explanations.
After several minutes, Vihaan quietly slipped a hand into the pocket of his hoodie.
He pulled out a neatly folded paper airplane.
Aanya glanced at it.
"This one's not flying?" she asked softly.
Vihaan smiled.
"Not today."
Instead of throwing it into the wind, he carefully placed it in her hands.
"For you."
She looked at him in confusion before unfolding it.
Inside, written in small, neat blue letters, were only three simple words.
Thank you... Friend.
For a moment, everything around her faded.
The laughter.
The breeze.
Even the birds.
Only those two words remained.
Friend.
Such a small word.
Yet somehow...
It reached a place inside her heart that had been empty for years.
She slowly looked up.
Vihaan wasn't watching her reaction.
He was simply staring at the sunset with a peaceful smile, completely unaware that his innocent gesture had quietly broken through the walls she had spent years building around herself.
A gentle smile finally appeared on Aanya's face.
Small.
Soft.
But real.
For the first time in years...
The thought of going home didn't feel urgent.
For the first time...
She wanted the evening to last just a little longer.
To Be Continued...
