Meet Me In The Middle
Seventh period with Mrs. Talke was always the worst. She really is a nice lady but she is way to old to still be teaching. She starts the class by taking a really long time to take attendance when we really don't have that many people in the room.
"Good morning guys," said Mrs. Talke
"What about the girls?" replied Jayla Marks.
It was supposed to be a joke but no one laughed. Everyone just ignored her because Jayla's jokes aren't funny, but when I look at my friend Hayden, I can tell that he is trying his very best not to laugh.
"Ladies and Gentlemen" Mrs. Talke corrected.
She was slightly annoyed but she moved on.
Mrs. Talke did attendance, very slowly, and she began the lesson. She took her blue whiteboard marker, like always, and begins writing on the board.
P-O-P-Q-U
I hear everyone sigh or slump down on their desk.
POP QUIZ was written on the board in bright blue marker.
"Alright boys and girls! Today we have a pop quiz on William Shakespeare," Mrs. Talk said.
She handed out the quiz and said that we had half an hour to complete it. When I turned over the paper I quickly skimmed over it. It was just basic things about his work and stuff. When I finished the quiz I handed it to Mrs. Talke and sat back down.
"Psst. Hey Dayton," Hayden said.
"What?" I replied.
"What's the answer to question five?" He asked
I rolled my eyes and told him to figure it out. He chuckled to himself and went back to work.
Mrs. Talke finishes the class and the bell rings.
"I'll have these quizzes graded by tommorow," she said as we all walked out the door. I go to my locker to get my stuff to got home and as soon as I close my locker I see some random girl walk up to me.
"Um, Hi Dayton," she said.
"Hey," I replied.
She was looking down at the floor and her face was very red.
"Um, I'm Cameron Tayne and I was wondering if you, um, wanted to maybe
go...,"
"He's not interested," my ex Kaia chimed in.
"Oh sorry," Cameron said as she ran away.
Kaia turned to me and said, "So when are you gonna pick me up tonight"
"I'm picking you up tonight?" I replied, "Last time I checked Sam O'Nelly was picking you up".
Her face turned red.
"I already told you that I'm sorry," she said.
I could see her fidgeting with her finger. That's what she always did when she was nervous.
"I was just being stupid," she exclaimed.
"Well things haven't changed" I said,"
I walked away from her towards the front doors at school and I pulled out my car keys.
"Ugh!" she cried as I walked away from her, "Your not better than me jerk!"
I waved goodbye to her without turning around and popped in my headphones to let her know that I wasn't listening anymore.
I got into my car and started to drive home. Then I thought that maybe I should stop by Town Square to get some fresh air beforehand. I was walking around for about half an hour and I stumbled upon Maysie Garden. It's right in the middle of our small town, Maysie, so a lot of people come to see it for a number of different reasons. Town Square is usually crowded but today there wasn't a lot of people. At the garden there was only one person. A girl actually. She was sitting on a bench with a sketchbook. I sat next to her on the bench. She didn't say anything to me so I thought she was just the quiet type. Much different from Kaia. We sat there for five minutes and I finally got tired of the silence so I opened my mouth and let words come out.
"Hey."
