Behind Closed Doors

The city lights disappeared behind the rain-streaked windows as the black sedan glided silently through the empty streets of Rome.

Adrian sat in the back seat, his hands free but his freedom gone.

Two men in tailored black suits sat on either side of him. Neither spoke. Neither looked at him. The only sounds inside the car were the soft hum of the engine and the rain tapping against the glass.

His camera...

Gone.

His notebook...

Gone.

His phone...

Gone.

Everything that connected him to his ordinary life had been taken away.

He stared out the window, trying to memorize every turn the car made, but after nearly forty minutes of winding roads, underground tunnels, and deserted streets, he realized they weren't simply driving.

They were making sure he could never find his way back.

Adrian let out a slow breath.

Stay calm.

Think.

He was a criminology student. He had spent years studying criminal organizations, hostage psychology, and interrogation methods. Those lessons suddenly felt less like coursework and more like survival.

The car finally slowed.

A pair of enormous iron gates rose before them, surrounded by high stone walls covered in ivy. Security cameras tracked every movement, and armed guards stood beneath pools of warm light.

The gates opened without a sound.

Beyond them stretched an estate unlike anything Adrian had ever seen.

An elegant villa overlooked perfectly kept gardens, ancient fountains, and rows of towering cypress trees. Expensive cars lined the circular driveway, while men and women in dark suits moved through the property with quiet efficiency.

It looked less like a criminal hideout...

...and more like the home of old European royalty.

The sedan stopped.

One of the guards opened the door.

"Out."

Adrian stepped into the cool night air.

His shoes crunched softly over white gravel as he looked around.

No shouting.

No chaos.

Everything was organized.

Disciplined.

That disturbed him more than disorder ever could.

Inside the villa, polished marble floors reflected the glow of crystal chandeliers. Massive paintings covered the walls, each depicting generations of stern-faced ancestors.

Every hallway whispered history.

Every room carried authority.

As Adrian was escorted deeper inside, dozens of people glanced at him before quickly looking away.

Who was he?

Why had the Boss brought him here?

No one dared ask aloud.

The guards stopped before two enormous wooden doors.

One of them knocked twice.

A calm voice answered from inside.

"Enter."

The doors opened.

The room beyond was breathtaking.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the rain-soaked gardens. Shelves filled with leather-bound books lined one wall, while maps of Europe covered another. A roaring fireplace warmed the otherwise silent room.

Standing beside the window was the woman in black.

She had removed her rain-soaked coat, revealing an elegant black suit tailored with flawless precision.

She didn't turn immediately.

Instead, she continued looking out at the storm.

"Leave us."

The guards hesitated.

"Boss..."

"I said leave."

Without another word, they obeyed.

The doors closed behind them.

For the first time since that terrible night began, Adrian found himself alone with her.

The silence stretched between them.

Finally, she turned.

Her expression remained unreadable.

"You've been observing everything since you arrived."

It wasn't a question.

Adrian nodded cautiously.

"I notice details."

"So I've seen."

She walked slowly toward a table where his belongings rested.

His camera.

His notebook.

His wallet.

Untouched.

She picked up the notebook and placed it before him.

"Your observations are... impressive."

He frowned.

"You read it."

"I did."

"You had no right."

She met his gaze without flinching.

"And yet, here we are."

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Adrian noticed something unexpected.

The room contained no extravagant displays of wealth—no gold statues or unnecessary luxury. Instead, there were books on history, philosophy, economics, and law.

This wasn't the office of someone driven by greed alone.

It belonged to someone who planned several moves ahead.

"You still haven't told me why I'm here," Adrian said.

She folded her hands behind her back.

"If I intended to silence you, it would have happened already."

"Then why bring me here?"

"Because you ask questions."

His brow furrowed.

"I don't understand."

"I know."

She walked past him toward the fireplace.

"Most people fear what they don't understand."

"And you?"

"I study it."

Her answer lingered in the room.

Before Adrian could respond, a sharp knock echoed at the door.

A guard entered.

"Boss... the council has arrived."

For the first time, a faint crack appeared in her calm expression.

"Already?"

"Yes."

She nodded once.

"I'll be there."

The guard glanced briefly at Adrian before leaving.

As the door closed again, she looked back at him.

"You'll remain here."

"I'm your prisoner."

"You may call it that."

"And if I refuse?"

A faint smile touched her lips—not warm, not cruel, simply amused.

"You won't."

She walked toward the door.

Just before leaving, another voice echoed from the hallway.

"Miss De Luca... the council is waiting."

Adrian's eyes widened.

De Luca.

It was the first real clue to her identity.

The door closed before he could ask another question.

Alone in the vast office, Adrian turned toward the bookshelves.

Something felt... wrong.

One of the books wasn't aligned with the others.

It protruded just enough to catch his attention.

Slowly, he reached for it.

The moment he pulled it...

A hidden panel beside the fireplace slid open.

Beyond it lay a dimly lit passage descending beneath the villa.

Cold air drifted upward.

Someone had been keeping secrets beneath this house.

And Adrian had just found the entrance.
