Episode 4 — An Unspoken Distance

The night had grown quieter.

One by one, the guests offered their congratulations before leaving the Rahman mansion.

"Congratulations, Nawab Sahib."

"May Allah bless the children."

"What a wonderful match."

Polite smiles filled the room.

Mahnoor responded shyly to every greeting, her cheeks still flushed with embarrassment.

Everything had happened so quickly.

Just this morning, she had been helping her mother bake cookies.

By evening...

She was engaged.

She stole a glance across the room.

Zayan stood beside her father, speaking to a few businessmen.

Even while talking, his posture remained straight, his expression calm and unreadable.

Not once had he looked in her direction.

Mahnoor quietly lowered her eyes.

"Maybe..."

"He's just shy."

The thought comforted her more than it probably should have.

A little later...

The last guest finally left.

The mansion became peaceful once again.

Mahnoor helped the servants collect the empty teacups.

Her mother smiled.

"You don't have to do that."

"I want to."

"You've been on your feet all evening."

Mahnoor laughed softly.

"I'll sleep after this."

As she reached for a tray, another hand reached for it at the same time.

She froze.

It was Zayan.

For a brief moment...

Their fingers almost touched.

He immediately picked up the tray himself.

"You don't need to carry something this heavy."

Mahnoor blinked in surprise.

"I-It's alright..."

"I've got it."

His tone wasn't rude.

Nor was it warm.

It was simply... distant.

Before she could say anything else, he walked toward one of the servants and handed over the tray.

Then he stepped away again.

Mahnoor stood where she was.

Confused.

"He helped me..."

"But why does he act like he's building a wall between us?"

Outside...

Several black luxury cars waited beside the entrance.

Sameer opened the rear door.

"It's time to leave."

Zayan gave a final nod to Nawab Rahman.

"Thank you for your hospitality."

"The pleasure was ours."

"I'll contact you soon regarding the engagement ceremony."

"I'll be waiting."

As Zayan turned to leave...

He felt someone's gaze.

He looked back.

Mahnoor stood near the doorway beside her mother.

She smiled politely.

A small...

Genuine smile.

Almost unconsciously...

He paused.

For the shortest moment...

He considered returning the smile.

Instead...

He looked away.

Without another word, he stepped into the car.

The convoy disappeared into the night.

Mahnoor watched until the taillights vanished.

Her mother gently nudged her shoulder.

"What are you thinking?"

She smiled sheepishly.

"Nothing..."

Then she admitted in a whisper,

"...He's very quiet."

Her mother chuckled.

"Not everyone expresses themselves easily."

"I know."

"I'll just have to be patient."

Inside the moving car...

Silence filled the cabin.

Sameer glanced at Zayan through the rearview mirror.

"You barely spoke to her."

"There was nothing to say."

"You could've smiled."

Zayan closed his eyes.

"A smile changes nothing."

Sameer sighed.

"I've never understood you."

"You don't need to."

The conversation ended there.

But despite his cold words...

One image refused to leave his mind.

A girl standing at the doorway...

Smiling at him...

Without fear.

Without suspicion.

Without knowing who he truly was.

He opened his eyes and stared out at the rain.

"This changes nothing," he muttered to himself.

Yet, for reasons he couldn't explain...

Her innocent smile lingered in his thoughts long after the Rahman mansion had disappeared behind them.

Far away, hidden in the darkness, another pair of eyes watched the convoy drive past.

A shadow stepped out from an abandoned building.

"So..."

The man smiled to himself.

"It has finally begun."

He slipped back into the darkness before anyone noticed his presence.

The game had only just started.
