Chapter 2: The Alpha in the Shadows
The footsteps grew louder.
Each one echoed through the silent forest like distant thunder.
The rogues stiffened, their confident smiles disappearing. Even the leader took an uneasy step backward.
A powerful scent filled the air—pine, rain, and something ancient.
Then a voice broke the silence.
"Leave."
It wasn't shouted.
It didn't need to be.
The single word carried so much authority that the trees themselves seemed to tremble.
From the darkness emerged a massive black wolf. His fur shimmered beneath the Blood Moon, and his silver eyes glowed with quiet power. He was larger than any wolf Lyra had ever seen.
The rogue leader swallowed hard.
"Alpha Kael..."
The black wolf stared at the rogues without a sound.
A low growl rumbled from his chest.
The forest shook.
Birds burst from the trees, and the rogues instinctively lowered their heads.
"You were warned," Kael said after shifting into his human form.
He was tall, with dark hair that brushed his forehead and piercing silver eyes that never left the rogues. A long black coat rested over his broad shoulders, marked with the crest of the Shadow Moon Pack.
"You crossed into my territory."
The rogue leader tried to smile.
"We were only passing through."
Kael's expression remained cold.
"You were hunting."
Silence.
"I don't repeat myself."
The rogues exchanged nervous glances before turning and disappearing into the forest.
Within seconds they were gone.
Only Lyra and the mysterious Alpha remained.
For the first time, Kael looked directly at her.
His calm expression changed.
Shock flashed across his face.
"No..."
He took one slow step closer.
"It can't be."
Lyra instinctively backed away.
"Who are you?"
Instead of answering, Kael stared at the crescent-shaped birthmark on her wrist.
His breathing became uneven.
"The Moon Mark..."
"You know what this is?" Lyra asked.
Before he could answer, the mark suddenly began to glow with soft silver light.
Pain shot through her arm.
She cried out and fell to one knee.
The light spread across her wrist like delicate vines before fading just as quickly.
Kael knelt beside her.
"Does it hurt?"
"It... it burned."
He gently helped her stand.
"You need to come with me."
"I'm not going anywhere with a stranger."
A faint smile appeared on his face for the first time.
"That's a brave answer."
"But if you stay here, the rogues will return."
Lyra hesitated.
Everything about him told her to be cautious.
Yet something deep inside whispered that she could trust him.
"Where would we go?" she asked quietly.
"My pack."
"The Shadow Moon Pack?"
Kael nodded.
"They've been searching for someone with your mark for nearly twenty years."
Lyra frowned.
"Why?"
Kael looked toward the Blood Moon.
"Because the last person to bear it disappeared the night the Moon Kingdom fell."
His voice grew softer.
"And I believe that person was your mother."
Lyra's heart stopped.
"My... mother?"
Before Kael could explain, a deafening howl echoed across the mountains.
Not one wolf.
Hundreds.
Kael's face hardened.
"They found us."
A scout burst from the trees and dropped to one knee.
"Alpha! The Crimson Fang Pack has crossed the border. They're heading this way."
Kael turned toward the distant howls.
"They're too early."
Then he looked back at Lyra.
"The war has begun."
Without another word, he held out his hand.
"If you want answers about your parents, you must trust me now."
Lyra stared at his hand.
Behind her, the howls grew closer.
Ahead of her stood the only person who seemed to know the truth about her past.
Taking a deep breath, she reached out.
The moment their hands touched, a brilliant silver light burst from the Moon Mark, lighting up the entire forest.
Far away, hidden beneath the ruins of an ancient castle, a pair of glowing crimson eyes slowly opened.
"They've found the heir," a dark voice whispered.
"Bring her to me... alive."
