The freezing rain felt like needles against Aria’s numb skin as she stumbled blindly through the fog. Her bare feet bled from the jagged asphalt, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the hollow, gaping wound in her chest. She had no phone, no money, no home, and no father’s legacy left to protect. Every pillar of her life had been systematically demolished in a single night.
A sharp pair of headlights cut through the darkness behind her, casting long, menacing shadows down the empty street. Aria turned her head slightly, her heart leaping into her throat. A heavy black SUV was crawling along the curb, tracking her like a predator trailing wounded prey.
Liam’s words echoed in her mind: If you open your mouth, they won't just shut off your mom's machines—they'll make sure you disappear too.
Panic overrode her exhaustion. Aria broke into a frantic sprint, her soaked white dress clinging to her legs. She lunged down a narrow, cobblestone alleyway, desperate to lose them in the labyrinth of San Cristóbal's historic district. The roar of the SUV's engine accelerated behind her, tires screeching against the wet pavement.
The alley ended abruptly at the base of a massive, shadowed structure: the ruined Santa Maria Gothic Cathedral. Its ancient stone spires clawed at the stormy sky, a relic of a forgotten era left to decay. Gasping for air, Aria scrambled up the wide, cracked marble steps, throwing her weight against the massive iron doors. She pounded on them frantically, but they remained heavily locked, sealing her fate.
"Going somewhere, pretty" a harsh voice sneered from the bottom of the steps.
Three men stepped out of the shadows, their heavy footsteps echoing against the stone. They wore the dark tactical jackets of the Navarro Cartel. The man in the center, a scarred thug with a sadistic grin, flicked open a long, silver switchblade. The steel gleamed maliciously under the distant neon lights.
"Liam said you might be a problem," the scarred man muttered, ascending the steps slowly to corner her against the iron doors. "It's nothing personal, sweetheart. Just wiping the slate clean. A tragic street mugging gone wrong—that's what the police report will say."
Aria pressed her back flat against the cold iron doors, sliding down until she was trapped on her knees. Tears mixed with the rain on her face. She closed her eyes, waiting for the fatal blow, praying that whatever happened to her, her mother wouldn't suffer.
The scarred man knelt before her, gripping her jaw tightly and forcing her head back. He pressed the icy edge of the blade directly against her throat. "Shh. Make it easy."
Suddenly, the world went completely dead.
The relentless roar of the thunderstorm vanished into an eerie, suffocating silence. Aria opened her eyes and gasped—her breath materialized into a thick, frozen cloud of white mist. The temperature dropped so drastically and violently that frost began to web across the iron doors behind her. In mid-air, the falling rain slowed down, seemingly suspended in time like millions of floating glass beads.
The shadows clinging to the cathedral's Gothic arches began to writhe. They detached themselves from the stone walls, pooling together at the base of the steps like living liquid ink.
From the center of the darkness, Valerius appeared out of thin air.
He wore a tailored, midnight-black coat that billowed around him like wings. His eyes, usually a cold and calculative blue in the human world, burned with a terrifying, luminescent crimson. He didn't look like Valen Vance, the gángster king; he looked like death incarnate.
Before the cartel thugs could even register his presence, the slaughter began.
Valerius moved with a terrifying, supernatural speed that defied human comprehension—a blur of absolute violence. He closed the distance in a fraction of a millisecond. With a sickening crunch, his bare hand drove straight through the chest of the first thug, tearing his heart out before the man could even scream.
The second hitman reached for the gun at his waistband, but Valerius was already there. He grabbed the man by the throat, lifting his massive body effortlessly into the air, and slammed him down onto the stone steps. The marble cracked violently under the impact, and a torrent of dark cartel blood sprayed across the ancient white steps, mixing with the frozen rain.
The scarred leader stumbled backward in absolute horror, dropping his blade. He tried to turn and run, but Valerius materialized directly in front of him, blocking his path. Valerius’s face distorted, his jaw unhinging slightly to reveal razor-sharp, predatory fangs. With a single, brutal sweep of his claws, he decapitated the final man, painting the cathedral steps in a horrific crimson display.
It was over in seconds. Three armed killers lay torn apart, their blood steaming against the frozen marble.
Aria sat paralyzed, completely overwhelmed by the raw horror and the impossible, supernatural display she had just witnessed. Her mind, already fractured by heartbreak, simply snapped. The world tilted, and her eyes rolled back into her head as her body collapsed sideways.
Before she could hit the hard stone, Valerius caught her.
He pulled her fragile, shivering body against his chest. As he did, the sweet, celestial scent of her skin hit his heightened senses like a violent, intoxicating drug. It was the same frequency that had awakened his dead heart hours ago, now magnified by her terror and blood.
An insatiable, primal hunger roared to life inside him. His fangs fully extended, aching to pierce her soft skin. He pinned her head back against his arm, his lips brushing the pulse point on her neck. He wanted to drain her right there, to consume every drop of her celestial essence and make her a permanent part of his darkness.
But as his fangs touched her skin, a blinding, golden light suddenly flared from the ancient stone crest carved into the cathedral doors above them.
"Ah!" Valerius snarled, recoiling as a searing, burning pain blasted through his flesh. The holy sigil pulsed with ancient power, smoking against his supernatural skin.
He hissed in fury, his crimson eyes locking onto the ancient crest. He had forgotten. This was consecrated ground. By pulling her onto these steps, she had inadvertently triggered the ancient Sanctuary Law—a vow written in blood centuries ago that even the King of Vampires could not break without destroying himself. By the laws of the night, she was protected under his jurisdiction, but he could not harm her here.
Valerius looked down at the unconscious, pale girl cradled securely in his arms. The rain began to fall normally again, washing the cartel blood down the stone steps. A dark, twisted amusement flickered across his lethal features. Destiny had just backed him into a corner.
He swept her up into his arms, his voice a low, gravelly whisper against the wind.
"You chose the wrong church to die on, little bird."
