.......

The first thing Bennett Hayes noticed about his new roommate was that he looked like a wet storm cloud.

The second thing he noticed was that the storm cloud was sitting on _his_ bed.

It was move-in day at Westbridge University, 2026. The dorms smelled like fresh paint, cardboard, and anxiety. Benny had spent the last three hours making his side of Room 204 look like a Pinterest board. String lights. A mini cookie jar. A poster that said "YOU GOT THIS!" in pastel letters. He even bought a little cactus and named it Carl.

And then Theo Callahan walked in.

Theo was tall. Dark hair that looked like he cut it himself with kitchen scissors. Black hoodie. Black jeans. Black everything. He had a duffel bag slung over one shoulder and the expression of someone who had just been told he had to share a toothbrush for the next 9 months.

He dropped the bag, looked around the room, and frowned at Carl the cactus.

"Are you Benny?" Theo asked. His voice was low and flat. Like he hadn’t had coffee. Or joy. Ever.

"Yep!" Benny beamed, because that was his whole thing. Beaming. "And you must be Theo! I’m Bennett but everyone calls me Benny. You can call me Benny. Or Ben. Or Cookie Guy, because I brought cookies. Oatmeal chocolate chip. Do you want one?"

Theo stared at him.

Benny stared back, still holding out the Tupperware.

Finally, Theo sighed like the weight of the world was on his shoulders and said, "No."

"Okay!" Benny said, unbothered. He put the cookies down on the shared desk and immediately started organizing Theo’s stuff without permission. "You got the left side. That’s the side with the window. I got the right side because I like being close to the outlet for my fairy lights. Is that cool?"

"It’s a dorm," Theo said. "Nothing’s cool."

Benny laughed. "You’re funny."

"I wasn’t joking."

That was how it started.

---

By 6pm, the room was a war zone of vibes.

Benny’s side: yellow blanket, polaroid photos, a whiteboard that said "Benny’s To-Do List: 1. Make friends 2. Get an A in Baking 101 3. Adopt a dog someday"

Theo’s side: black blanket, no photos, a single notebook and a laptop. His whiteboard was blank.

"You don’t have any decorations?" Benny asked, sitting cross-legged on his bed. He was wearing fuzzy socks with little puddles on them.

Theo didn’t look up from his laptop. "Don’t need them."

"But it’s so empty. It’s like... a sad hotel."

"It’s a dorm."

Benny deflated a little. Then perked back up. "Wanna go to the welcome party? Mason said there’s free pizza. And punch. Probably bad punch, but still."

"I don’t do parties."

"Ever?"

"Ever."

Benny nodded seriously, like he was taking notes. "Noted. Storm Cloud does not do parties."

Theo finally looked up. "Did you just call me a storm cloud?"

"Only in my head!" Benny lied. "I meant... cool guy. Cool storm... guy."

Theo went back to typing. But the corner of his mouth twitched. Benny counted it as a win.

---

At 9pm, Benny couldn’t take it anymore. The silence was too loud. So he did what he always did when he was nervous. He baked.

The shared dorm kitchen was empty. He pulled out his emergency mini oven and a bag of flour from his suitcase. 20 minutes later the whole floor smelled like sugar and butter.

Theo showed up in the doorway, drawn in by the smell. He was still in the hoodie. Hair messy.

"Are you... baking at 9pm?" he asked.

"Stress baking," Benny said, pulling out a tray of snickerdoodles. "It’s a coping mechanism. Also I’m hungry. Want one?"

This time Theo didn’t say no. He took one. Bit into it.

And for half a second, his whole face softened.

Then he caught himself. "It’s okay," he said, and walked away.

Benny grinned into his oven mitt. "Okay" was basically a 5-star review from Theo.

---

Midnight.

Benny was asleep. Dead asleep. Drooling a little. The string lights were still on.

A loud CRASH woke him up.

Benny shot up. "What! Fire! Earthquake! Puppy?"

Theo was standing in the middle of the room. Water everywhere. His duffel bag had leaked.

"Shit," Theo muttered. "The water bottle exploded."

Benny jumped out of bed, puddle socks and all. He skidded straight into the growing puddle on the floor.

"WHOA—"

Theo moved fast. One second Benny was falling, the next he was being caught. Theo’s arms were around his waist, holding him up. They were really close. Close enough that Benny could smell Theo’s shampoo. Something cold and clean.

They stared at each other for 3 seconds too long.

"Put me down," Benny squeaked.

Theo dropped him immediately, like he was on fire. "Sorry."

"It’s fine!" Benny said, face red. "You saved me! From the puddle! That’s ironic because my socks have puddles on them. Look."

He lifted one foot. Theo did not look.

"We need towels," Theo said, voice rough. He grabbed a stack from his bag and started mopping.

Benny grabbed towels too. They cleaned in silence for 5 minutes.

Then Benny, because he couldn’t help it, whispered, "Thanks for catching me, Storm Cloud."

Theo paused. "Don’t call me that."

"Okay... Thunder?"

"...No."

"Grumpy Muffin?"

Theo threw a wet towel at him. Benny laughed and threw one back.

And just like that, the puddle on the floor was gone. But something else had started.

---

*12:30am. Room 204.*

Lights off.

Benny was whispering in the dark. "Theo? You asleep?"

"...No."

"Do you think dogs have favorite humans?"

"I don’t have a dog."

"But if you did. What would you name it?"

A long pause.

"...Puddle."

Benny gasped quietly into his pillow. "That’s the cutest thing you’ve ever said."

"I didn’t say anything."

"You did in my heart."

Theo groaned. "Go to sleep, Benny."

"Okay. Night, Theo."

"...Night."

Outside, it started to rain.

Inside Room 204, two very different people fell asleep 3 feet apart. One smiling. One pretending not to.
