Chapter 4: The Obsidian Syndicate
Chrites walked through the cold, neon-lit streets of the Grovics continent. The terrifying demon mask covered his entire face, casting absolute fear into the few stray pedestrians who dared to look his way. He navigated a labyrinth of dark, twisting alleyways until he reached an abandoned industrial warehouse on the forgotten edge of the city. Inside the damp building, hidden beneath a rusted freight elevator, was a heavy steel vault door. He placed his uninjured left hand on a biometric scanner. The heavy door hissed open with a rush of pressurized air, revealing a sprawling, highly advanced underground bunker.
Inside the hidden facility, thirty members of his private organization stood at attention. They were dressed immaculately, mirroring Chrites in sharp, tailored black suits and long formal coats. The room was a hub of advanced technology, filled with glowing monitor screens, humming servers, and digital tactical maps covering the walls.
A tall man, serving as his lieutenant, stepped forward from the ranks. His sharp eyes immediately darted to the thick, blood-soaked bandages wrapped tightly around Chrites's right hand.
"Sir," the lieutenant said, his voice laced with deep concern. "Your hand is bleeding heavily. Were you compromised during your mission today? Should I call for the medical team?"
Chrites walked right past him, taking a seat in a high-backed leather chair at the head of a long, black tactical table. "Stand down, Silas. It is a deliberate injury. A necessary cover to maintain my disguise."
"A cover, sir?" Silas asked, raising an eyebrow. "You let a common enemy strike you?"
"I had no other choice if I wanted to remain hidden," Chrites explained, his tone flat and cold. "Today was the entrance ceremony for the military academy. During the physical testing phase, the school was violently attacked by a wild gang of Scrappers. They blew open the gymnasium, caused a massive panic, and injured several students. They almost killed one of my friends."
Silas clenched his fists, his expression hardening. "A wild gang dared to interrupt your infiltration mission? That is an insult to this entire syndicate. What are your orders, sir?"
Chrites leaned forward, his glowing blue eyes narrowing dangerously behind the narrow slits of his demon mask. "Find their location immediately. I want to know exactly where these bastards are hiding right now. We are going to end their game tonight."
"Understood, sir," Silas said, bowing sharply. He turned to the operators sitting at the computer terminals and began barking orders. "You heard the boss! Trace the mana signatures of the unregistered weapons used in the downtown sector! Cross-reference the underground transit cameras! Find that base right now!"
"Bypassing the city grid now, sir!" one of the operators shouted back, his fingers flying across the digital keyboard. "Scanning for high-density mana leaks in the industrial sector!"
Twenty long minutes passed. The underground bunker was filled with the frantic, rapid clicking of keyboards and the loud humming of magical tracking servers. Chrites sat completely relaxed in his leather chair. He had pulled a digital console from his coat pocket and was casually playing War Dead Zombie.
"Die, you rotten freak," Chrites muttered quietly to himself, tapping the screen to shoot a digital monster. He was completely unbothered by the throbbing pain in his hand while his syndicate furiously hunted the real monsters across the city.
Suddenly, rapid footsteps echoed against the metal floor. Silas sprinted over to the tactical table.
"Sir! We finally found them!" Silas announced, slamming a glowing holographic map directly onto the table. "They retreated to an abandoned subway terminal on the far edge of the industrial district. Thermal scans show thirty to forty life signatures inside. They are all grouped together."
"Are there any civilian signatures in the area?" Chrites asked, not looking up from his game.
"Negative, sir. The tunnels are completely abandoned," Silas confirmed.
Chrites turned off his video game and slipped the console back into his deep coat pocket. He stood up slowly, the long hem of his dark coat brushing quietly against the steel floor.
"Excellent," Chrites commanded. "Let us go."
He stepped away from the table and raised his left hand toward the open floor. He reached deep into the terrifying ocean of Darkness locked within his magical core.
"Abyssal Step," Chrites commanded softly.
A pool of pitch-black, liquid shadow began to spread rapidly across the floor of the bunker, bubbling and shifting like boiling tar. The heavy darkness expanded outward, completely swallowing the feet of the thirty syndicate members standing behind him. The shadows surged upward in a violent, silent wave, completely engulfing Chrites and his entire squad. In a fraction of a millisecond, the bunker was entirely empty.
Miles away, deep within the forgotten, crumbling tunnels of the old city subway system, the Scrappers were celebrating their victory.
The abandoned train terminal had been converted into a crude, filthy fortress. Rusty metal barrels filled with burning trash provided heat and flickering orange light. The gang members were exhausted but thrilled. Attacking a heavily fortified government academy was not an easy task, but the distraction had allowed them to successfully steal a massive shipment of unrefined mana crystals and several lockboxes of military credits.
The gang leader sat on a broken concrete bench, his mechanical breathing mask hanging loosely around his sweaty neck. He was drinking heavily from a glass bottle.
"Count it fast, boys!" the leader laughed loudly, pointing his bottle at his men. "The military police are probably tearing the city apart looking for us right now! But they will never check the dead zones down here!"
"You think they will post a bounty on us, boss?" one of the younger thugs asked, greedily stuffing digital credit chips into his pockets.
"Let them post whatever they want!" the leader sneered. "We lay low here for a few days, and then we sell these crystals to the black market! We are going to be kings!"
A loud chorus of cheers erupted from the greedy thugs.
Then, the entire front wall of the subway terminal exploded.
There was absolutely no warning. A massive shockwave of pure concussive force obliterated the brick and steel reinforced wall, sending a blinding cloud of concrete dust and heavy debris washing over the celebrating gang members. The explosive force knocked several of them off their feet, scattering their stolen money across the dirty floor.
"What the hell was that?!" a thug screamed, scrambling up in a panic and drawing his illegal weapon.
"Ambush! Form up!" the gang leader roared, dropping his bottle. It shattered against the stone floor.
As the thick smoke began to settle, a terrifying sight emerged from the rubble. Standing in the jagged breach of the destroyed wall was a man wearing a horrific demon mask, his dark coat blowing wildly in the wind of the explosion. Behind him stood thirty elite soldiers in matching black suits, their faces cold, silent, and entirely emotionless.
"Who the hell are you?!" the gang leader roared, his face twisting with aggressive rage and sudden, piercing fear. "How dare you enter my base without permission! You fucking bastards! Kill them all!"
One of the gang members, a massive man wielding a heavily modified rifle, did not hesitate for a second. He aimed the barrel of his weapon directly at Chrites's chest.
"Eat this! Volt Cannon!" the thug screamed, pulling the heavy trigger.
A massive, blinding bolt of jagged blue thunder erupted from the gun, tearing through the cavern air straight toward the masked intruder. The air crackled with intense heat.
Chrites did not even blink. He did not move a single muscle to defend himself.
"Insolent trash," Silas muttered, stepping smoothly and incredibly fast in front of his boss.
Silas drew a sleek, silver katana from his side. His blade hummed with condensed wind magic. "Silver Crescent Strike!"
With a single, impossibly precise swing, Silas sliced the bolt of lightning directly in half. It was as effortless as cutting a soft melon in the sky. The severed halves of the magical electrical blast crashed into a stack of rusted oil barrels behind them, detonating safely away from the group.
The gang members froze in absolute terror. They dropped their weapons slightly. No ordinary human could cut raw magic out of the air with a physical blade.
"What kind of monsters are these guys?" a Scrapper whispered, stepping backward in fear.
Chrites stepped forward, his patience completely exhausted. He raised both of his hands toward the high ceiling of the cavernous subway terminal. He unleashed the heavy locks on his magical core, allowing the impossible combination of Light and Dark magic to flow simultaneously into the real world.
"You dared to touch what is mine," Chrites said, his magically distorted voice vibrating the very stone of the walls. "Now, you pay the toll. Eclipse Blade Fall."
The air inside the terminal grew suffocatingly heavy. The temperature dropped to freezing. Above the heads of the terrified gang members, the very fabric of space distorted. Two hundred glowing swords materialized out of thin air. Half of them radiated a holy, blinding white radiance. The other half were forged from absolute, void-like darkness.
The gang leader fell to his knees, his eyes wide with sheer disbelief. "No... wait... please!"
Chrites dropped his hands.
The swords fell.
They moved at the speed of light, leaving blinding streaks of black and white across the dark room. It was not a battle; it was a total slaughter. The ethereal blades pierced through concrete pillars, metal armor plates, and human bone with zero resistance. In less than a single millisecond, the entire terminal was reduced to a bloody graveyard. Every single gang member, including the arrogant leader, was pinned dead to the ground by the glowing swords.
The cavern went completely dead silent, save for the quiet crackling of the trash fires.
High above the abandoned subway line, walking alone down the desolate city street, a teenage girl stopped dead in her tracks.
She had seen the massive flash of light bleeding through the iron grates in the pavement. She felt the terrifying, overwhelming surge of mana vibrate through the soles of her shoes. Her eyes narrowed with intense suspicion. She knew the criminal underworld well, and she had never felt magic like that in her entire life. It felt like two opposing gods had just clashed underground.
Driven by an overwhelming curiosity, she sprinted toward the hidden entrance of the abandoned subway terminal. She hurried down the broken, rusted escalators, keeping her own weapon drawn and ready.
When she finally reached the bottom platform, her breath hitched in her throat.
The terminal was completely destroyed. Dozens of gang members lay violently dead, their bodies surrounded by fading particles of light and dark energy. Standing calmly amidst the horrific carnage was an army of men in sharp black suits, led by a terrifying, silent figure wearing a painted demon mask.
She stepped out of the shadows, her hands shaking slightly as she gripped her weapon.
"Who the hell are you?" she demanded, her voice echoing in the silent cavern. "Why did you kill all of them? What kind of organization is this?"
Chrites turned his masked face slowly toward the girl. His glowing blue eyes studied her for a long moment. He saw no threat, only a foolishly brave bystander.
"We are The Obsidian Syndicate," Chrites said, his deep, echoing voice sending a shiver down her spine.
"The Obsidian Syndicate?" she repeated, taking a nervous step backward.
"Do not try to interfere with our business," Chrites warned, his tone absolute, chilling, and final. "It will be a risky choice for your life. Just be away from us. That is the best choice you can make."
