Chapter 3: The Keeper of Forgotten Secrets

..."The dead leave behind graves. Secrets leave behind doors."...

Sara couldn't breathe.

The whisper still echoed inside the tunnel.

"You came back... just like you promised."

She spun around so quickly that her flashlight slipped from her hand. It hit the damp stone floor with a dull thud before rolling into the darkness. The beam flickered wildly, casting dancing shadows across the narrow passage.

"Who's there?" she shouted, her voice trembling despite her attempt to sound brave.

No answer.

Only the steady drip... drip... drip... of water falling from the ceiling.

Her heartbeat pounded in her ears.

The small barefoot footprints on the dusty floor hadn't disappeared.

They led away from her, deeper into the tunnel.

Every instinct told her to turn back.

But when she looked behind her, the stone wall where the hidden entrance had been was solid.

There was no door.

No bookshelf.

Nothing.

It was as if the tunnel had swallowed her whole.

Sara closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

"This isn't real," she whispered.

"I must be panicking."

She counted slowly to ten.

When she opened her eyes again...

The footprints were gone.

A cold shiver ran down her spine.

Gathering her courage, Sara picked up the flashlight and walked toward the old wooden door bearing the same symbol as her silver pendant.

This time, she didn't touch the handle immediately.

Instead, she examined the carving closely.

The symbol wasn't just a design.

It was made of three parts.

A crescent moon.

A blooming rose.

And a cracked mirror.

"Why would Grandma wear this?" she murmured, touching the identical pendant around her neck.

The metal felt strangely warm.

Then...

A soft click echoed from inside the door.

The handle slowly turned by itself.

Sara stepped back.

The door opened only a few inches.

Darkness waited on the other side.

She raised the flashlight.

The room was surprisingly small.

Old shelves lined the walls, filled with dusty wooden boxes.

In the center stood a single chair.

Nothing else.

No ghosts.

No monsters.

Only silence.

She entered cautiously.

As her foot crossed the doorway, the air changed.

It smelled of old paper, dried roses... and candle wax.

Someone had once spent a great deal of time here.

On the chair lay a faded cloth bundle.

Sara untied it carefully.

Inside were dozens of old keys.

Some were tiny enough to fit a jewelry box.

Others were large, black iron keys, heavy enough to lock castle gates.

Tied to each key was a handwritten tag.

Kitchen.

Attic.

Chapel.

West Wing.

One tag, however, had no name.

Only a single word.

"Not Yet."

Sara frowned.

"What does that even mean?"

Before she could inspect it further...

She heard footsteps.

Real footsteps.

Not whispers.

Not echoes.

Someone was walking above her.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The sound stopped directly overhead.

Then came three knocks.

Knock...

Knock...

Knock...

Sara looked up instinctively.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

The knocks were coming from inside the manor.

Exactly above this hidden room.

Almost as if someone knew she was there.

She quickly gathered the bundle and searched for another exit.

At the far end of the room she noticed a narrow staircase leading upward.

Unlike the tunnel, these steps looked newer.

Someone had used them.

Recently.

Her pulse quickened.

The staircase ended behind another hidden door.

With a gentle push...

It opened.

Sara blinked in surprise.

She was back inside the library.

But not where she had entered.

She had emerged behind the old grandfather clock.

She turned to look at the hidden door.

There wasn't one.

Only an ordinary wooden wall.

The passage had vanished.

Relieved to be back upstairs, Sara glanced at the clock.

Its hands still pointed to exactly 3:00.

It hadn't moved.

Not even a minute.

Yet she had spent what felt like nearly an hour underground.

A strange uneasiness settled over her.

"That's impossible..."

She checked her phone.

11:47 a.m.

The clock should have shown the same.

Instead...

It remained frozen at three.

A loud knock echoed from the manor's front door.

Sara almost dropped the bundle of keys.

Nobody knew she was here.

She hesitated.

Another knock.

Then another.

This time, she walked toward the entrance.

When she opened the door...

A young man stood outside.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

Dressed in a rain-soaked black jacket despite the clear sky.

His expression was calm.

But his eyes...

His eyes were fixed on the pendant around Sara's neck.

For a brief moment, something like shock crossed his face.

"You..." he whispered.

Sara frowned.

"Do we know each other?"

The stranger quickly composed himself.

"My name is Ayaan Malik."

He offered a polite smile.

"I grew up in Noorabad."

"I heard someone had returned to Amara Manor."

Sara crossed her arms slightly.

"And?"

"I came to see if the rumors were true."

"What rumors?"

Ayaan's smile disappeared.

"That the manor finally chose its next keeper."

A cold breeze swept between them.

Neither spoke.

Somewhere inside the house...

A door slammed shut.

Both of them looked toward the dark hallway.

Ayaan's face changed instantly.

Not fear.

Recognition.

As though he knew exactly which door had closed.

He looked back at Sara.

"You've already been inside the library, haven't you?"

Sara's heart skipped a beat.

She hadn't told anyone.

She hadn't even mentioned the hidden passage.

"How do you know that?"

Instead of answering...

Ayaan quietly asked,

"Did you take anything from down there?"

Sara instinctively tightened her grip on the cloth bundle behind her back.

For the first time...

She wondered whether opening the front door had been a mistake.
