Chapter 2: The Prank That Went Too Far

By lunchtime, everyone had already forgotten about the scene in the courtyard.

Everyone except Lily.

She sat alone beneath the old oak tree behind the school library, carefully drying the pages of her chemistry notebook with tissues from her bag. Most of the ink had bled into blue smudges.

She sighed.

"So much for studying."

"Lily?"

She looked up to see Emily Carter hurrying toward her with two juice boxes and a warm smile.

"There you are! I've been looking everywhere."

Emily dropped onto the grass beside her and handed her one of the drinks.

"I heard what happened this morning."

Lily forced a smile.

"It's nothing."

Emily frowned.

"It stopped being 'nothing' a long time ago."

Lily stared down at her notebook.

"I don't want to give them the satisfaction of seeing me cry."

Emily reached over and squeezed her hand.

"One day, Jason Blake is going to regret everything he's done."

Lily let out a quiet laugh.

"I doubt someone like him even knows what regret feels like."

Across campus, Jason sat with his friends in the cafeteria.

The basketball team occupied their usual table, laughing loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"So..." Mason grinned. "Carter actually answered you today."

Jason shrugged while spinning a basketball on one finger.

"She finally found her voice."

"I liked it," another teammate admitted. "She almost embarrassed you."

Jason caught the basketball with one hand.

"Almost."

His smirk returned.

"Maybe she needs another reminder of her place."

The boys exchanged mischievous looks.

"What are you planning?" Mason asked.

Jason's eyes wandered toward the cafeteria entrance just as Lily and Emily walked inside.

An idea formed instantly.

The final bell rang an hour later.

Students flooded the hallways toward their lockers.

Lily packed her books slowly, waiting for the crowd to thin out before heading home.

As she reached her locker, she noticed something strange.

A small white envelope had been taped to the door.

Curious, she peeled it off.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Meet me in the auditorium after school. I need to tell you something important. Please come alone.

There was no signature.

Emily glanced over her shoulder.

"Who's it from?"

"I... don't know."

Emily narrowed her eyes.

"It could be a prank."

"Maybe."

"But what if it isn't?"

Lily hesitated.

After everything she'd been through, she still wanted to believe people could surprise her.

"I'll just look," she said.

"If nobody's there, I'll leave."

Emily sighed.

"I'll wait outside for you."

The auditorium was almost completely dark.

Only a few lights near the stage were switched on.

Lily stepped inside cautiously.

"Hello?"

Her voice echoed through the empty room.

No answer.

She took another step.

Still nothing.

"Is anyone here?"

Suddenly—

The stage lights blazed on.

A loud burst of music filled the room.

Confetti cannons exploded from both sides.

The curtains flew open.

Dozens of students emerged from behind them, laughing hysterically.

In the center of the stage stood Jason Blake.

Holding a bouquet of fake flowers.

He dropped dramatically to one knee.

"Lily Carter!" he shouted into a microphone.

The entire auditorium erupted with laughter.

"Will you do me the unbelievable honor of becoming the ugliest girlfriend in school?"

More laughter.

Phones shot into the air.

Someone yelled, "Say yes!"

Another shouted, "She's actually blushing!"

Lily stood frozen.

Her face burned with humiliation as hundreds of camera flashes lit up the room.

Jason extended the bouquet with a mocking grin.

"So... what do you say?"

For several seconds, the room was silent except for the snickers.

Then Lily slowly walked toward him.

Jason smiled, expecting tears.

Instead...

She took the bouquet from his hand.

Everyone leaned forward.

Without saying a word, Lily tore the flowers in half.

The petals scattered across the stage.

She looked Jason straight in the eyes.

"This is why no one will ever truly respect you."

The smile vanished from Jason's face.

The auditorium fell completely silent.

Before anyone could react—

A loud crash echoed from backstage.

One of the heavy lighting rigs snapped loose from the ceiling.

It came hurtling straight toward the stage...

...and toward Lily.
