Chapter 4: The Night They Came for Him
One year passed.
Naruto became stronger, but to Konoha, almost nothing appeared to have changed.
He still fell asleep during Academy lessons.
He still failed techniques whenever too many people were watching.
He still laughed too loudly, argued with Iruka, and returned every evening to an apartment where no one waited at the door.
The village believed Naruto Uzumaki trained alone.
Only Naruto knew that every night, someone waited behind the bars.
Kurama’s lessons had changed.
Balancing on posts became walking across water. Throwing one kunai became striking several targets while moving. Creating a single clone became coordinating small groups without speaking.
Kurama taught Naruto to feel hostility before it became an attack. He taught him how chakra changed when someone lied, how fear disturbed breathing, and how experienced shinobi disguised killing intent beneath calm movements.
Most importantly, Naruto had begun learning how to touch Kurama’s chakra.
Only a thread at first.
Then enough to strengthen one arm.
Enough to sharpen his hearing.
Enough to form a thin red layer across his skin for several seconds.
Kurama controlled every exercise and ended it immediately whenever Naruto’s emotions became unstable.
“Power is not control,” he reminded Naruto.
Naruto had heard the words so many times that he sometimes repeated them in his sleep.
At nine years old, he remained far from mastering Kurama’s strength.
But he was no longer afraid of it.
⸻
That night, Naruto slept beneath a twisted blanket, one leg hanging over the edge of his bed.
Inside the mindscape, Kurama’s eyes opened.
Something had crossed Konoha’s outer barrier.
The disturbance was faint. Whoever had entered knew how to suppress chakra and move between the village’s sensory points.
But concealing chakra from human sensors was different from concealing it from a tailed beast.
Kurama raised his head.
Seven signatures.
Six moved in two groups through the sleeping village.
The seventh remained behind them, so quiet that Kurama nearly mistook him for an absence rather than a person.
“Naruto.”
The boy shifted beneath his blanket.
“Five more minutes…”
“Naruto. Wake up.”
Naruto pulled the blanket over his head.
Kurama’s voice shook the mindscape.
“Someone has entered the village.”
Naruto’s eyes opened immediately.
He rolled out of bed and landed in a crouch.
The apartment was dark.
No footsteps waited outside the door. No shadow moved beyond the window.
Naruto dressed quickly, tied on his kunai pouch, and approached the glass.
“How many?”
“Seven.”
“ANBU?”
“No. They are avoiding patrol routes.”
Naruto looked toward the Hokage Monument.
“Where are they going?”
“Three toward the Hokage building. Three toward the Academy.”
“And the last one?”
Kurama focused.
“I cannot locate him precisely.”
Naruto’s expression hardened.
The signature was present, yet its position seemed to slide between the others, as if the surrounding chakra concealed it.
“That’s the dangerous one,” Naruto said.
Kurama’s ears shifted.
“Correct.”
Naruto formed a hand seal.
A Shadow Clone appeared beside him.
“Go to the old man. Don’t fight anyone. Deliver the warning and disappear.”
The clone nodded and climbed through the window.
Naruto followed.
He landed on the neighboring rooftop and turned toward the Academy.
Kurama spoke immediately.
“You are not pursuing them alone.”
“I’m checking where they are.”
“That is the definition of pursuing them.”
“What if there are children inside?”
“It is past midnight.”
“There are records. Teachers. Night guards.”
Kurama growled.
“Naruto.”
“I’ll observe until help arrives.”
“You said the same thing before falling into the river.”
“That was different.”
“You were equally foolish.”
Naruto continued across the rooftops.
Kurama could have blocked the small amount of chakra strengthening the boy’s feet.
He did not.
“Obey every warning I give you,” the fox said.
Naruto smiled faintly.
“Got it.”
⸻
Three masked figures stood outside the Academy.
Naruto hid behind a water tank on a nearby roof and watched through the eyes of two clones concealed at street level.
One intruder knelt beside the Academy wall, drawing black symbols across the ground. Another placed four metal spikes at the corners of the property. The third remained above them, scanning the surrounding rooftops.
No headbands.
No recognizable uniforms.
Their masks were smooth and gray, marked only by vertical black lines.
“What are they doing?” Naruto asked silently.
Kurama studied the formation through every pair of eyes.
“That is not an explosive seal.”
“A barrier?”
“Yes. Once completed, no sound or chakra will leave the building.”
Naruto noticed several storage scrolls attached to the kneeling shinobi’s back.
“They’re not trying to destroy the Academy.”
“No.”
“They’re stealing something.”
“Or someone.”
Naruto’s stomach tightened.
He formed three more clones.
Kurama sensed his decision.
“Wait for ANBU.”
“If that barrier closes, they won’t know where to find us.”
“You promised to observe.”
“I observed.”
“That was less than a minute.”
“It was a very useful minute.”
Before Kurama could answer, Naruto moved.
The first clone threw three kunai—not at the intruders, but at metal drainpipes on three separate buildings.
Clang. Clang. Clang.
The lookout turned toward the sound.
A second clone emerged behind the kneeling seal user and kicked the ink container across the courtyard.
Black liquid spilled through the unfinished symbols.
The barrier formula flickered.
“Enemy!” the lookout shouted.
Two more Narutos dropped from the roof.
The intruder beside the metal spikes drew a hooked blade. He cut through one clone, turned, and drove his elbow into the second.
Both vanished.
But their memories returned to the real Naruto.
Fast. Right-handed. Favors his injured left knee.
The lookout formed hand signs.
“Wind Style: Severing Current!”
A blade of air crossed the courtyard.
Naruto dropped beneath it. The attack cut through the water tank behind him as though it were paper.
Kurama’s warning came immediately.
“Above.”
Naruto rolled.
The hooked blade struck the roof where his neck had been.
He swept the attacker’s damaged left leg and sent him off balance. A clone appeared behind the man, seized his wrist, and redirected the weapon into the roof tiles.
Another intruder landed beside them.
Naruto released the first man and jumped backward as a palm coated in black chakra passed inches from his chest.
The tiles it touched turned gray and cracked.
“Do not allow that chakra to touch you,” Kurama said.
“I noticed.”
The three intruders surrounded Naruto.
The lookout tilted his mask.
“A child?”
Naruto said nothing.
The hooked-blade user examined the remaining clones positioned around the courtyard.
“Not an ordinary one.”
The seal user looked toward Naruto’s stomach.
His posture changed.
“He matches the description.”
Kurama’s chakra shifted beneath the seal.
Naruto felt it too.
They had not come only for Academy records.
They knew who he was.
⸻
The intruders attacked together.
A wire net descended from above while hooked chains swept across the rooftop. Naruto created four clones. Two caught the chains. One threw him beneath the net. The final clone transformed into a kunai and disappeared into his pouch.
Naruto landed in the courtyard.
The seal user was waiting.
Five black tags struck the ground around him.
A narrow barrier rose before Naruto could escape.
The air inside became heavy.
His connection with the clones outside disappeared.
Even Kurama’s voice weakened.
“Naruto…”
The seal user approached.
“So the Nine-Tails brat can fight.”
Naruto stepped backward.
The black chakra on the man’s palm brightened.
“We were ordered to retrieve the Academy’s jinchūriki records. But bringing the subject himself may earn a greater reward.”
He struck.
Naruto caught the man’s wrist with both hands.
Pain shot through his arms. The black chakra began crawling toward his skin.
“Kurama!”
A thin red pulse traveled from Naruto’s chest to his palms.
The foreign chakra burned away.
The intruder recoiled.
For the first time, fear appeared in his breathing.
“You can access it deliberately?”
Naruto twisted the wrist and drove his forehead into the man’s mask.
The mask cracked.
The barrier around them flickered.
Naruto pulled the transformed clone from his pouch and threw it toward one of the tags.
The kunai became Naruto in midair and tore the paper from the ground.
The barrier collapsed.
Kurama’s voice returned at full strength.
“Behind you!”
A chain wrapped around Naruto’s waist and dragged him across the courtyard.
His back struck the Academy wall.
The hooked-blade user pulled again, launching Naruto toward him.
Naruto formed a seal while airborne.
Five clones appeared around the chain. They seized it together and pulled in the opposite direction.
The attacker’s damaged knee buckled.
Naruto landed, ran along the tightened chain, and kicked him across the face.
Before Naruto touched the ground, the lookout appeared above him.
A black metal rod struck Naruto’s shoulder.
Electricity tore through his body.
His clones vanished.
Naruto collapsed.
The rod’s point pressed against the back of his neck.
“Enough,” the lookout said. “Bind him.”
The seal user began drawing another formation.
Naruto tried to move, but his muscles refused to answer.
Kurama’s voice remained calm.
“Breathe.”
Naruto forced air into his lungs.
“Do not reach for all of my chakra. Take only what you require.”
Warmth gathered around Naruto’s heart.
It flowed along his spine, entered his shoulders, and spread through his limbs.
The paralysis loosened.
The lookout sensed the change.
“Stop the seal!”
Naruto’s hand closed around the metal rod.
Red chakra flashed across his fingers.
He snapped it in half.
Then he rose.
A dark-red cloak spread across his body. It remained close to his skin rather than exploding outward. His whisker marks deepened, his pupils sharpened, and a single tail lifted behind him.
The courtyard tiles cracked beneath his feet.
All three intruders stepped back.
Naruto remained completely conscious.
“Kurama,” he whispered.
“I am watching.”
The hooked-blade user threw his chains.
Naruto moved before they reached him.
He appeared beside the man and struck his chest with an open palm. The chakra cloak extended at the moment of impact, multiplying the force without allowing Naruto’s fist to touch bone.
The man flew across the courtyard and crashed through a fence.
The lookout released another Severing Current.
Naruto’s tail swept sideways.
Red chakra struck the wind blade and forced it into the ground, carving a trench beside the Academy.
The seal user tried to flee.
A chakra arm emerged from Naruto’s shoulder, wrapped around the man’s ankle, and pulled him back.
Naruto pinned him against the wall.
“Who sent you?”
The intruder laughed beneath his broken mask.
“You still think we came for records?”
Naruto tightened the chakra arm.
“What do you want?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
“That the container is ready.”
Naruto froze.
Kurama felt the seventh signature move.
“Release him,” Kurama ordered.
Naruto obeyed instantly and jumped backward.
A blade passed through the space where his head had been.
Someone stepped from the shadow beneath the Academy roof.
He wore a cracked white mask with no village symbol. Long dark robes concealed most of his body, but Naruto could see pale sealing marks covering both arms.
Unlike the others, he did not suppress his chakra anymore.
The courtyard seemed to shrink beneath its weight.
The fallen intruders lowered their heads.
“Hokote-sama.”
Hokote looked at the broken barriers, the scattered masks, and the nine-year-old child standing between his men and the Academy.
Then he laughed quietly.
“Impressive.”
His gaze settled upon Naruto’s controlled cloak.
“A child fighting six trained shinobi—and maintaining his consciousness beneath the Nine-Tails’ chakra.”
Kurama growled.
Naruto lowered his stance.
“You’re the seventh.”
Hokote tilted his head.
“You sensed me?”
“Kurama did.”
The name changed the atmosphere.
Hokote became still.
“You call the beast by its name?”
“He isn’t a beast.”
A faint smile appeared beneath the cracked mask.
“How interesting.”
Hokote raised one hand.
The three intruders Naruto had fought forced themselves upright. Two additional shinobi emerged from the surrounding roofs. The final attacker returned from the direction of the Hokage building.
All six surrounded Naruto.
Hokote’s voice became cold.
“Forget the records.”
He pointed toward Naruto.
“Capture the child alive.”
⸻
All six moved at once.
The first threw suppression chains toward Naruto’s tail.
Two attacked from opposite sides.
A fourth formed an Earth Style seal beneath Naruto’s feet, while the remaining pair prepared a barrier around the courtyard.
Naruto’s chakra arms struck the first two attackers away, but the chains curved through the air and wrapped around his tail.
The red cloak flickered.
“They are draining my chakra,” Kurama said.
Naruto pulled against the chains.
The seals along their surface glowed brighter.
“Do not resist directly. They feed upon the struggle.”
Stone hands erupted from the ground and seized Naruto’s legs.
The barrier rose.
Five black walls surrounded the courtyard, cutting it away from the village.
Naruto could no longer feel his Shadow Clone traveling toward Hiruzen.
Hokote walked through the barrier as though it did not exist.
“You fight well,” he said. “But you remain a child borrowing power beyond your understanding.”
Naruto tried to move.
The suppression chains tightened.
His one-tail cloak began disappearing.
Hokote stopped several steps away.
“Who taught you to communicate with it?”
Naruto glared at him.
“He has a name.”
Hokote reached toward Naruto’s stomach.
“Not for much longer.”
Kurama’s roar shook the mindscape.
Naruto tore one foot free from the stone and kicked Hokote’s hand aside.
Hokote caught his ankle and threw him through the Academy wall.
Naruto crashed into an empty classroom.
Desks shattered around him.
The one-tail cloak collapsed.
Hokote entered through the broken wall.
Behind him, the six intruders placed their hands against the floor.
Black symbols spread around Naruto.
“Five-Sided Beast Suppression Formation.”
The connection between Naruto and Kurama dimmed.
Naruto fell to one knee.
“Kurama?”
No answer.
For the first time in a year, the voice inside him disappeared.
Hokote grabbed Naruto by the hair and lifted his face.
“Without the fox, you are nothing.”
Naruto’s shaking fingers formed a seal.
“You made one mistake.”
Hokote paused.
“Kurama trained me so I wouldn’t have to depend on him.”
The Naruto in Hokote’s hand vanished in smoke.
A Shadow Clone.
The real Naruto erupted from beneath the broken floor. Chakra—his own blue chakra—wrapped around his fingers like short claws.
He struck the nearest seal user across the shoulder.
The formation broke.
Kurama’s voice returned.
“Naruto!”
“I’m here!”
Red chakra rushed back through the damaged connection.
Naruto spun toward Hokote, but a sealing spike pierced his jacket and pinned him against the wall.
The six intruders began another formation.
Naruto’s breathing became heavy.
The one-tail cloak had consumed little of his own chakra, but breaking the suppression field had not. His body was bruised, one shoulder barely moved, and the Academy barrier was nearly complete.
No ANBU had arrived.
No alarm had escaped.
Hokote approached.
“This ends now.”
Naruto looked down at his right hand.
Inside the mindscape, Kurama understood.
“No.”
Naruto closed his eyes.
“Can I use it?”
“It is not necessary.”
“They’re about to complete the barrier.”
“Reinforcements will come.”
“They don’t know where we are.”
Kurama stared through the bars.
Naruto’s voice became quieter.
“If they capture us, neither of us is going home.”
Kurama remained silent.
This was not the desperate rage Naruto had shown during early training. His breathing was controlled. His mind was clear. He understood the danger.
And he was asking permission.
Finally, Kurama raised one claw.
“Yes.”
Naruto opened his eyes.
“But only forty percent,” Kurama said. “You control the shape and target. I will stop the technique if the balance changes.”
Naruto smiled.
“Gotcha.”
He raised his right hand.
Black and crimson chakra began gathering above his palm.
At first, the sphere was no larger than a marble.
Then it grew.
The air trembled.
Windows shattered throughout the Academy. Desks dragged across the floor toward Naruto. Cracks spread beneath his feet as the chakra compressed tighter and tighter.
Hokote stopped walking.
For the first time, his chakra revealed fear.
“A Bijū Bomb?”
The sphere grew to the size of a small apple.
Naruto’s arm shook, but the ratio remained balanced.
Hokote stepped backward.
“In a human hand…”
He spun toward his men.
“Do not allow him to complete it!”
Every intruder formed hand signs.
Fire gathered above one.
Wind screamed around another.
Stone spears tore through the classroom floor.
Hokote prepared a sealing technique with both hands.
“Release everything!” he shouted. “Collapse the technique before he fires!”
Naruto drew his arm backward.
The Bijū Bomb reached forty percent.
“Kurama—”
A silver blur passed through the broken wall.
One hand closed around Naruto’s wrist.
Another pressed firmly against his shoulder and redirected his arm toward the sky.
“Do not release that.”
Naruto froze.
A masked shinobi stood beside him, silver hair illuminated by the rotating sphere.
At the same instant, ANBU operatives dropped across the courtyard. A barrier rose between Naruto and the incoming techniques.
Fire, wind, and stone collided against it.
The Academy shook.
More shinobi landed on the surrounding rooftops.
Then the Third Hokage entered the courtyard, dressed in battle armor and carrying his staff.
His voice was colder than Naruto had ever heard.
“No one leaves.”
But the silver-haired ANBU barely looked at Hokote.
His visible eye remained fixed upon the Bijū Bomb in Naruto’s hand.
It was compressed.
Balanced.
Stable.
And the child holding it was completely conscious.
Naruto slowly looked toward him.
“Who are you?”
The masked shinobi did not answer.
His grip remained around Naruto’s wrist—not crushing, but ready.
Inside the mindscape, Kurama’s claw hovered above the stream of chakra.
“Dismantle it,” he said.
Naruto nodded.
The black and crimson chakra separated. Kurama pulled back the excess while Naruto reduced the compression and allowed the outer shell to dissolve.
The sphere shrank.
Apple.
Marble.
A single point of dark light.
Then it disappeared.
No explosion.
No uncontrolled release.
Silence fell across the ruined classroom.
The silver-haired shinobi stared at Naruto’s empty palm.
Creating a Bijū Bomb was terrifying.
Stopping one after it had stabilized was something else entirely.
Hiruzen entered through the broken wall and looked from Naruto to the unconscious intruders, then toward Hokote’s suppression formation.
His eyes returned to the nine-year-old boy pinned against the wall.
The silver-haired shinobi removed the sealing spike from Naruto’s jacket.
Naruto’s legs immediately gave way.
The man caught him before he struck the floor.
“Were you in control?” he asked.
Naruto’s vision blurred.
“We both were.”
The shinobi became completely still.
Not I was.
We were.
Naruto’s eyes closed.
His last conscious thought was Kurama’s voice.
“You did well.”
The words were quiet.
Almost reluctant.
But Naruto heard them.
For once, Kurama had not said acceptable.
And as the silver-haired shinobi carried him from the ruined Academy, Naruto smiled.
Behind them, Hiruzen looked at the battlefield his youngest Academy student had survived.
Then he turned toward the masked man holding Naruto.
“Kakashi,” the Hokage said, “I want a complete assessment.”
Kakashi looked down at the unconscious child in his arms.
For the first time, he saw neither the Nine-Tails nor its container.
He saw his teacher’s son.
And he understood that while Konoha had spent years looking away, someone behind the bars had been raising him.
