EPISODE 2: THE BARBADOS KING

Shanghai. Illuminous Luxury Automobile Company, executive boardroom. Morning.

The boardroom was glass on three sides, the city spread out beneath it like something already conquered. A dozen men in tailored suits sat around the long table, folders open, voices low with the particular tension of people who know they are about to be judged. At the head of the table, Wang Bopan sat with his hands folded, saying nothing, letting the silence do the work his words hadn't yet needed to.

BOARD MEMBER

(nervous, clearing his throat)

Mr. Wang, the numbers from the Eastern distribution line are down eleven percent this quarter. We believe it's a supply issue, not a demand issue, so if we—

WANG BOPAN

(calm, cutting)

Eleven percent isn't a supply issue. It's a loyalty issue.

He didn't raise his voice. He never needed to. He slid a folder across the table without looking up, and the man beside him opened it to find, printed in neat rows, a list of shipments that had been quietly rerouted through a rival distributor over the past two months.

WANG BOPAN

Someone at this table has been selling information to Fenghua Motors. I don't care who apologizes first. I care who's still in this room by Friday.

No one spoke. No one dared. He closed the meeting the way he closed every meeting — a short nod, a rise from his chair, the room emptying around him like water finding the drain, and by the time he reached the elevator, he had already stopped thinking about it. Business was easy. Business had never been where his real war was fought.

Barbados territory. The old docks, converted into a private compound. Afternoon.

Away from the glass tower and the polished boardrooms, there was another version of Wang Bopan — the one that didn't wear a tie, the one the papers didn't photograph, the one whose name was spoken in certain rooms of the city with something closer to fear than respect. The Barbados compound sat behind unmarked gates near the old shipping docks, guarded by men who answered to no law but his.

He walked its length with Xiao Lay half a step behind him, past crates being loaded, past men who straightened when he passed, past a ledger being kept by Yuan Kris, who bowed his head slightly as they approached.

XIAO LAY

The southern crew wants to know if we're moving against White Oasis territory yet, or holding.

WANG BOPAN

(without slowing)

Holding. For now.

XIAO LAY

(surprised)

Holding? After ten years, and now that we finally have Zhan's name, you want to hold?

Bopan stopped walking. He turned to face Lay fully, and something in his expression made even his most trusted man go quiet.

WANG BOPAN

I didn't wait ten years to be reckless in the final stretch. I want Zhan to feel me coming before he ever sees me. I want him to lie awake wondering which shipment, which associate, which quiet corner of his empire I've already taken apart. When I move, Lay, I move once. Completely.

He turned back toward the water, hands in his pockets, watching a ship being unloaded in the gray afternoon light.

WANG BOPAN

(quieter)

My family didn't get a warning. Zhan doesn't deserve one either. But he'll get something worse — time to be afraid.

Yuan Kris, still bent over his ledger nearby, glanced up just long enough to catch the exchange, then quickly looked back down, unwilling to be caught watching the man everyone in Barbados simply called the King.

Later. Bopan's penthouse, high above the city. Evening.

The apartment was vast and nearly silent, all clean lines and cold surfaces, a place that looked more like a monument than a home. Bopan stood at the wall of glass overlooking Shanghai's skyline, a folder of White Oasis financial records open on the table behind him, untouched for the moment. Xiao Lay let himself in — one of the very few men trusted with that privilege — and found him exactly where he expected: standing, still, watching the city like it owed him something.

XIAO LAY

You haven't eaten.

WANG BOPAN

(not turning)

I'm not hungry.

XIAO LAY

You're never hungry anymore. You work, you plan, you stand at that window. That's not a life, Bopan. That's a countdown.

Something flickered across Bopan's face — not quite anger, not quite grief, something worn smooth by ten years of being both at once.

WANG BOPAN

It's the only life I have left to live until this is finished.

He finally turned from the window, and for just a moment, beneath the ice, Lay caught a glimpse of the eighteen-year-old boy who had once knelt on a rain-soaked floor, before it vanished again behind the composure of the man Shanghai had come to know as the Barbados King.

WANG BOPAN

When it's finished, Lay. Then I'll learn how to be hungry again.

He picked up the folder from the table, and the conversation, like every conversation about anything other than the war ahead, was over.
