Chapter 2

The ride to the estate was silent, shrouded in the suffocating luxury of Kaelen’s armored sedan.

Ian stared out the tinted window, watching the city lights blur into the dark, jagged silhouettes of the coastal cliffs.

Beside him, Kaelen didn't say a word.

He simply sat with his fingers elegantly steepled, his gray eyes fixed on Ian like a collector monitoring a fragile, temperamental piece of porcelain.

When the car finally stopped, the rain was coming down in sheets.

Ian was led through the towering iron gates of Blackwood Manor, a sweeping gothic estate that sat isolated on the edge of the sea.

Kaelen’s hand was a constant, heavy presence at the small of Ian’s back, guiding him through vaulted stone corridors and up a spiral staircase.

There were no guards in sight, but the heavy thud of the oak doors closing behind them felt as definitive as a prison cell locking into place.

"Your new sanctuary," Kaelen said, pushing open a pair of double doors at the end of the highest corridor.

Ian stepped inside and froze.

The room was vast, easily the size of a penthouse apartment, but it wasn't a bedroom.

It was a state-of-the-art art studio.

Massive skylights caught the flash of lightning overhead.

Rows of pristine, untouched canvases stood like headstones in the center of the room.

Along the walls were shelves stocked with every pigment, oil, solvent, and brush an artist could dream of.

It was a paradise and a psychological torture chamber.

"You expect me to just sit here and paint forgeries for you?" Ian asked, his voice echoing in the empty space.

He turned to face Kaelen, his hands clenched into fists.

"I won't do it. Destroy my hands if you want. I won't help you run a criminal empire."

Kaelen didn't look angry. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate step forward, shedding his rain-dampened overcoat and tossing it onto a nearby chair.

"You think too poorly of me, Ian. I don't need you to copy old masters. Anyone with a steady hand can do that."

He closed the distance between them until Ian’s back hit the edge of a heavy wooden easel.

Kaelen reached out, his long fingers gently catching Ian’s chin, forcing him to look up.

"I need your eye," Kaelen murmured, his voice dropping to a low, hypnotic register.

"The ledger you found in the underpainting it’s missing its final cipher.

The artist who created it hid the key inside a series of landscapes.

Only someone who understands the exact brushwork, the exact layering of the pigment, can extract it."

Ian tried to pull away, but Kaelen’s grip tightened just enough to anchor him.

Kaelen’s other arm slid around Ian’s waist, pulling him flush against his chest.

The proximity was overwhelming, a terrifying mix of physical dominance and an intense, hyper-focused attention that made Ian's skin burn.

"If you refuse, the museum takes the fall for the forgery you found tonight," Kaelen whispered against Ian's temple, his breath warm against the cold sweat on Ian's skin.

"Your mentor, the director who built your career he goes to federal prison. And you? You disappear."

Ian's breath hitched.

He felt completely trapped, not just by Kaelen's physical strength, but by the meticulous web the man had spun around him.

"You're a monster," Ian choked out.

"Perhaps," Kaelen replied softly, his lips brushing the sensitive skin just below Ian's ear, making a involuntary shiver run down Ian's spine.

"But I am a monster who can keep you alive. Play along, Ian.

Find the cipher for me, and we can discuss your freedom."

Kaelen stepped back, the sudden loss of his warmth leaving Ian feeling strangely cold and exposed.

Without another word, Kaelen turned and walked toward the door, leaving Ian alone in the vast, shadowed studio.

The lock clicked into place from the outside.

Ian sank to the floor, his back against the easel.

His eyes drifted to the row of blank canvases.

He knew Kaelen would never let him go, even if he found the cipher.

If he wanted to survive, he couldn't just be a victim.

He had to use the very tools Kaelen gave him to find a way out even if it meant playing a dangerous game of submission.
