The Photograph

I didn't sleep well that night.

The message from Vanessa kept replaying in my head.

Thank you for today.

There was nothing romantic about those words by themselves.

Maybe she was thanking Daniel for helping her with work.

Maybe they had lunch together.

Maybe I was turning something harmless into something ugly because I was already suspicious.

I hated that I was starting to question everything.

Daniel came out of the bathroom wearing a shirt and shorts.

"You okay?"

I looked up from my phone.

"Yeah."

"You've been quiet."

"I'm tired."

He sat beside me.

"Come here."

I moved closer, and he wrapped his arms around me.

He smelled like his usual shower gel.

His hand gently rubbed my back.

For a moment, I felt safe again.

Maybe I was wrong.

Maybe Vanessa really was just a coworker.

Maybe the photo I had seen of them outside the café meant nothing.

Maybe I was letting one strange week destroy three years of memories.

Daniel kissed my forehead.

"Stop thinking so much."

I smiled.

"How do you know I'm thinking?"

"Because I know you."

I looked at him.

"Do you?"

He smiled.

"Of course."

Then he kissed me.

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

The next morning, Daniel left before me.

He kissed me goodbye and promised he'd call during lunch.

I watched his car disappear from the window.

Then I went to work.

I was trying to focus when my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I opened the message.

There was no text.

Just a photograph.

I stared at it.

My heart stopped.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Together.

They were sitting at a small table inside a restaurant.

Daniel was leaning toward her.

Vanessa was smiling.

His hand was resting on hers.

I zoomed in.

There was no mistake.

It was definitely Daniel.

I felt something cold move through my chest.

I stared at the photograph for almost a minute.

Then another message appeared.

Unknown: You deserve to know.

I swallowed.

My fingers shook as I typed.

Me: Who are you?

No response.

Me: Where was this taken?

Nothing.

I looked at the photograph again.

The date was visible in the corner.

Three days ago.

Three days ago, Daniel had told me he was working late.

I remembered that night.

I had messaged him.

Me: Are you still at work?

He had replied:

Daniel: Yeah, babe. Busy night.

I had believed him.

Now I was looking at a photograph of him sitting across from Vanessa in a restaurant.

I put my phone down.

My eyes burned.

I didn't cry.

Not yet.

I couldn't.

I felt too confused.

I opened my conversation with Daniel.

I scrolled back to that night.

There it was.

His message.

Daniel: Don't wait for me. I'll probably be late.

I looked at the photograph.

Then at his message.

My heart hurt.

But a part of me still fought against the truth.

Maybe there was an explanation.

There had to be.

I called him.

He answered quickly.

"Hi, babe."

"Where are you?"

"At work."

I closed my eyes.

"Really?"

"Yeah. Why?"

I almost told him.

I almost asked about the photograph.

But something stopped me.

"I just miss you."

There was a brief pause.

Then he laughed softly.

"I miss you too."

"Are you busy?"

"A little."

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Did you go anywhere three nights ago?"

Silence.

Then he answered.

"No."

My stomach tightened.

"You're sure?"

"Yeah. Why?"

"Nothing."

"Elena, what's wrong?"

"I told you. Nothing."

"You sound upset."

"I'm just tired."

He sighed.

"I'll call you later."

"Okay."

"I love you."

I stared at the photograph on my desk.

"I love you too."

We ended the call.

I sat there.

He had lied.

Again.

But I still couldn't make myself believe he was cheating.

I hated myself for that.

Maybe I was scared.

Because if I accepted the truth, everything changed.

Three years of memories would suddenly look different.

Every late night.

Every canceled plan.

Every time he told me he was working.

Every time he said he loved me.

Would I have to question all of them?

I didn't want to.

So I did what people often do when they aren't ready to accept something painful.

I found excuses for him.

Maybe Vanessa had a problem.

Maybe he was helping her.

Maybe the picture wasn't what it looked like.

Maybe—

My phone vibrated again.

Another message.

Unknown: Ask him about the hotel.

My blood went cold.

Me: What hotel?

A photograph appeared.

It was another picture of Daniel and Vanessa.

This time, they were standing outside a hotel.

Daniel's arm was around her waist.

Vanessa was smiling at him.

I stared at the screen.

My heart cracked.

I couldn't breathe properly.

I zoomed in.

The date was the same night Daniel had told me he was working.

I looked at the picture again.

There was no innocent explanation this time.

At least, there shouldn't have been.

But my mind still tried to find one.

I hated that part of me.

The part that wanted to protect him even when he was the one hurting me.

I put my phone away and went to the bathroom.

I locked the door.

I stared at myself in the mirror.

My eyes were already red.

"Don't cry."

I whispered.

"Not yet."

I washed my face.

Then I looked at myself again.

I thought about calling Daniel.

I thought about calling Vanessa.

I thought about confronting them both.

But I remembered something my friend Mia had told me.

Don't become blind just because you trust someone.

Maybe she was right.

I needed to know the whole truth.

Not just what these photographs showed.

So I returned to my desk.

I opened the photographs again.

I studied every detail.

The restaurant.

The hotel.

The dates.

Their clothes.

The times.

Then I noticed something.

In the restaurant photograph, Daniel was wearing the same watch he had been wearing when he came home that night.

In the hotel photograph, he was wearing the same shirt.

I remembered that shirt.

He had told me he had spilled coffee on it at work.

I had even helped him wash it.

I covered my mouth.

"God."

The lie wasn't small.

It was carefully constructed.

And I had been standing right in the middle of it.

My phone vibrated again.

Unknown: You still don't believe me.

I stared at the message.

Me: I don't know what to believe.

The reply came quickly.

Unknown: Then ask Daniel where he was that night.

I typed:

Me: Who are you?

No response.

I waited.

Nothing.

I looked at Daniel's name on my phone.

Then I opened our conversation.

I typed:

Me: Can we talk tonight?

He replied almost immediately.

Daniel: Of course. Is everything okay?

I stared at those words.

I could almost hear his voice.

Sweet.

Concerned.

Loving.

The same man who had kissed me goodnight while hiding another woman.

I deleted the photograph from the chat with the unknown person.

Then I saved it somewhere else.

I didn't want Daniel to know I had it.

Not yet.

I typed:

Me: Everything's fine.

Daniel: You sure?

Me: Yes.

Daniel: I love you.

I stared at the message for a long time.

Then I replied:

Me: I love you too.

The lie tasted bitter.

But I needed him to believe me.

Because I wasn't ready to lose him.

Not because I wanted to keep him.

But because I wanted to understand how far his lies went.

That evening, Daniel came home carrying flowers.

He smiled when he saw me.

"I got these for you."

I accepted them.

"Thank you."

He kissed my cheek.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

"You seem quiet."

"I'm tired."

He studied me for a moment.

Then smiled.

"Come here."

He pulled me into his arms.

I rested my head against his chest.

His heart was beating normally.

Mine wasn't.

I looked over his shoulder at the flowers in my hand.

Beautiful flowers.

From the man I loved.

The same man who had been photographed with another woman.

And somehow, I still wanted to believe he wasn't the man in those pictures.

Maybe that was the saddest part.

I already had proof.

But my heart was still asking for another explanation.

And Daniel?

He had no idea that I was beginning to see the cracks in the perfect boyfriend he had worked so hard to become.
