chapter 4

chapter four — the wedding day

the wedding day arrived too quickly.

isabella woke before sunrise.

for several moments, she lay in bed staring at the ceiling, hoping she had imagined everything.

the marriage.

the contract.

lucas.

but then she saw the white wedding dress hanging near the window.

and reality returned.

today, she was getting married.

a soft knock came at the door.

“come in,” isabella whispered.

her mother entered first, followed by sofia carrying a tray of breakfast.

sofia smiled brightly.

“the bride is awake.”

“i don't want to be awake.”

“too late,” sofia said, placing the tray down. “you have exactly six hours before you become mrs. lucas.”

isabella buried her face in a pillow.

“this is terrible.”

her mother sat beside her.

“no, sweetheart. it's just frightening because it's new.”

isabella looked at her mother.

“were you scared when you married papa?”

her mother smiled softly.

“a little.”

“and did you love him?”

her mother's eyes became distant.

“not at first.”

isabella blinked.

“what?”

“we learned each other slowly,” her mother said quietly. “love doesn't always begin like lightning. sometimes it grows quietly.”

isabella looked toward the wedding dress.

“do you think that can happen for me?”

her mother touched her cheek.

“i think life surprises us.”

across the city, lucas stood in front of a mirror while adrian adjusted his tie.

“you look unhappy,” adrian said.

lucas gave him a cold look.

“i'm getting married.”

“most people smile during that sentence.”

lucas buttoned his jacket.

“most people are not me.”

adrian laughed.

“are you nervous?”

“no.”

“you're lying.”

lucas looked at him.

“i don't lie.”

“you do when it comes to emotions.”

lucas ignored him.

adrian continued.

“you've checked your watch twelve times.”

“i have a schedule.”

“and you've asked if security is ready five times.”

“because it matters.”

adrian smiled.

“no, lucas. because you care.”

lucas remained silent.

adrian's smile softened.

“you know, for a man who never wanted a wife, you've become strangely protective of her.”

lucas looked out the window.

he thought of isabella.

her yellow dress.

the flower necklace.

her habit of speaking without thinking.

and the way she looked at him—not with fear, but curiosity.

that unsettled him.

because curiosity could become trust.

and trust could become something much more dangerous.

“let's go,” lucas said.

the church stood on a hill overlooking the city.

guests filled the seats.

powerful men.

important families.

people with polite smiles and hidden secrets.

the atmosphere looked beautiful.

but beneath the beauty was tension.

this wedding wasn't only a celebration.

it was a peace agreement.

lucas stood at the front of the church.

calm.

silent.

unreadable.

then the music began.

everyone stood.

lucas looked toward the entrance.

and forgot, for one brief second, how to breathe.

isabella stood beside her father.

the white dress suited her perfectly.

simple.

elegant.

soft.

the flower necklace rested around her neck.

she looked nervous.

and beautiful.

lucas noticed the way her hands trembled.

without understanding why, he felt something unfamiliar.

the desire to make sure she wasn't afraid.

isabella slowly walked down the aisle.

her heart was beating so fast she thought everyone could hear it.

people were watching her.

whispering.

smiling.

but she only saw one person.

lucas.

standing quietly at the front.

waiting.

when she reached him, her father placed her hand in lucas's.

lucas's hand was warm.

steady.

strong.

and somehow, that calmed her.

the ceremony began.

the priest spoke.

words about family.

promises.

commitment.

isabella tried to listen.

but she was distracted.

by the fact that she was standing beside the man she was about to marry.

then came the vows.

lucas spoke first.

his voice was calm.

certain.

“i promise to protect you. to respect you. and to stand beside you for as long as this marriage lasts.”

simple words.

but something about them felt real.

then it was isabella's turn.

she looked at lucas.

he looked back.

and suddenly, she forgot every prepared sentence.

“i…”

everyone waited.

isabella swallowed.

“i promise not to annoy you too much.”

silence.

then sofia laughed.

someone coughed.

even the priest looked surprised.

isabella's face turned red.

“oh no.”

lucas looked at her.

and then—

very slightly—

he smiled.

a real smile.

small.

brief.

but real.

“you can make no promises in that area,” lucas said quietly.

soft laughter filled the church.

isabella stared at him.

for a moment, the fear disappeared.

the priest continued.

“do you, lucas, take isabella as your wife?”

“i do.”

“do you, isabella, take lucas as your husband?”

she looked at him.

the dangerous man everyone feared.

the quiet man who bought her a flower necklace.

the man who had promised she would never be punished for things she didn't do.

and for reasons she didn't fully understand, she answered.

“i do.”

the priest smiled.

“then i now pronounce you husband and wife.”

silence filled the church.

isabella blinked.

that was it.

she was married.

lucas looked at her.

she looked at him.

then, quietly, so only she could hear, he said:

“hello, wife.”

isabella stared at him.

then she whispered back,

“hello, husband.”

the reception was held at lucas's mansion.

isabella had never seen a place so large.

crystal chandeliers.

gardens filled with flowers.

music.

laughter.

guests everywhere.

it should have felt joyful.

instead, isabella felt overwhelmed.

she stood quietly near a window.

“regretting it already?”

she turned.

lucas stood beside her.

“no.”

he looked surprised.

“really?”

“i think i'm still trying to understand it.”

lucas nodded.

“that makes two of us.”

she looked at him.

“are you regretting it?”

“no.”

his answer came too quickly.

isabella noticed.

and smiled a little.

lucas looked away.

“people are staring.”

“that's because we're married.”

“that seems unreasonable.”

isabella laughed softly.

lucas looked at her.

and for the second time that day, he forgot to look away.

later that night, after the guests had left and the music had faded, a black car carried them toward lucas's estate.

the journey was quiet.

isabella looked out the window.

lucas sat beside her.

neither spoke.

then isabella whispered,

“my life changed today.”

“yes.”

“does that ever stop feeling strange?”

lucas thought for a moment.

“i don't know.”

she looked at him.

“will we be okay?”

lucas turned toward her.

outside, the city lights moved like stars.

and in the quiet darkness of the car, lucas gave her an answer she would remember forever.

“as long as you're with me,” he said quietly, “no one will touch you.”

isabella looked at him.

for the first time since the wedding had been arranged, she felt something unexpected.

not love.

not yet.

but safety.

and as the car disappeared into the night, neither of them realized that danger was already moving toward them.

because peace between powerful families never lasted forever.
