CHAPTER 1: THE VANCE EMPIRE

The Table of Wolves

The dining room of the Vance mansion did not feel like a home; it felt like a courtroom where everyone was already guilty.

High ceilings stretched overhead, lost in shadows that the massive crystal chandelier couldn't quite reach. Underneath its cold, brilliant light sat a long, polished obsidian table, buffed to such a mirror finish that Ren could see his own reflection staring back at him if he looked down.

Ren didn't look down. He kept his chin resting lightly in the palm of his hand, a bored, devastatingly beautiful smile playing on his lips.

He was wearing a silk, sky-blue shirt—deliberately chosen to contrast against the suffocating, dark luxury of the room. The top two buttons were undone, exposing the sharp collarbones and pale skin that he knew drew the eyes of the men at the table like moths to a flame. It was an effortless, vulnerable look.

And it was entirely weaponized.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance.

Arthur exuded the heavy, suffocating aura of a man who owned everything his eyes landed on. He ruled the Vance Global empire with an iron fist, a corporate predator who had systematically swallowed his dead rival’s shipping empire whole.

Ren’s chest tightened slightly, a fleeting spark of cold resentment flaring deep within him before he smoothly masked it with a lazy tilt of his head. This monster conquered my biological father's legacy, Ren thought, his eyes tracking the precise movement of Arthur's silver knife. He thinks he bought me along with the company assets.

"You're quiet tonight, Ren," Arthur’s deep, commanding voice cut through the soft clinking of silverware. He didn't look up from his plate, but the sheer weight of his tone demanded a response. "Usually, your campus escapades provide more entertainment for the table."

Ren let his smile widen, a soft, breathy chuckle escaping his throat. "Just enjoying the view, Arthur. It’s rare to see the entire boardroom gathered for dinner."

Beside him, a cold, oppressive tension shifted.

Sitting directly across from Ren was Victor, the ruthless CFO of Vance Global and Arthur's step-nephew.

Victor hadn't touched his food. His long, elegant fingers were wrapped tightly around the stem of his wine glass, his knuckles faintly white. To anyone else, Victor looked like the picture of perfect corporate discipline. But Ren knew better. Ren could feel the burning, possessive stare Victor was drilling into him—a dark, forbidden obsession that was eating the CFO alive from the inside out.

Victor hated that he wanted his step-nephew. He hated that he couldn't control the urge to watch Ren’s every breath. And Ren loved every single second of it.

"Ren should focus more on his upcoming term exams than campus gossip," Victor said, his voice dropping into a dangerously low, gravelly baritone. He finally looked away from Ren, targeting Arthur. "The Vance name carries expectations, even in the lecture halls."

"Oh, come now, Victor," Ren purred, shifting his weight slightly, letting the silk of his shirt slide down his shoulder just a fraction. He locked eyes with the CFO, his gaze dripping with a hidden, teasing mockery. "A little distraction keeps the mind sharp. Don't you agree?"

Victor’s grip on the wine glass tightened further. A dark, warning flash crossed his eyes—a silent promise of violence and retribution that made a thrilling shiver run down Ren's spine. Look at you, Ren thought, his heart quickening with an intoxicating rush of power. The brilliant CFO, losing his mind because I'm breathing in the same room.

Neither Arthur nor Victor had any idea.

Arthur believed Ren was a beautiful, submissive dependent he could break and control at his leisure. Victor believed he was the only one harboring a dirty, illicit hunger for the boy across the table. Ren was a double-agent in his own home, walking a tightrope over a volcano, playing both alphas in absolute isolation. If either of them discovered the other had touched him, the entire empire would burn.

Ren fully intended to be the one holding the match.

But as his eyes swept across the rest of the table, he was reminded that he wasn't the only one weaving secrets in the dark.

Bianca sat to Arthur’s right. Her marriage to Arthur was a clinical, profit-only transaction engineered to save her own skin after her first husband’s suspicious death. She had zero emotional bond with the tyrant at the head of the table, and even less with the youth standing quietly in the corner of the room.

Ren's gaze flicked to Jade, Bianca’s youthful personal assistant, who stood near the shadow of the grand curtains, holding a silver tray.

Jade was quiet, submissive, and perfectly obedient. But Ren, hyper-observant as always, didn't miss the subtle, shameless way Bianca's eyes lingered on Jade's frame when Arthur looked away. To Bianca, Jade was a toy—a mindless object of pure physical desire used to escape the suffocating reality of her life.

Then, Ren’s eyes drifted to Grace.

Grace, Ren’s step-sister and a powerful senior at his college, was currently trapped in a forced engagement to Victor—a blood alliance demanded by Arthur to permanently lock the creditor banks to the Vance name. Grace resented it bitterly. She hated Victor, and she hated the corporate cage she had been forced into.

But as Jade stepped forward to refill Bianca's glass, Ren noticed it.

It was just a split second. A sharp, fleeting intake of breath from Grace. Her knuckles turned stark white against her napkin as she watched Jade's hands. It was a look of dark, quiet longing—a desperate, hidden infatuation for her mother’s secret plaything.

Ren’s eyes narrowed slightly, his inner puppet master memorizing the dynamic instantly. Well, well, he thought, a slow, predatory thrill washing over him. Mother and daughter, coveting the same toy. Grace doesn't know a thing about Bianca's bedroom arrangements... yet.

It was a nuclear asset. A secret weapon Ren didn't fully understand yet, but one he would gladly store away for the day he needed to tear this family apart.

"Arthur," Clara’s professional, entirely neutral voice broke the undercurrent of tension.

Clara was Arthur’s hyper-observant executive PA. She was a ghost in the mansion, always watching, always recording, knowing exactly where every corporate body was buried. But as she handed a document to Arthur, Ren caught the minuscule softening of her posture, the silent, unrequited devotion in her eyes as she looked at the CEO.

Everyone is hiding a parasite in their heart, Ren mused, taking a slow sip of his water. Everyone wants something they can't have.

Arthur glanced at the tablet Clara handed him, his heavy brow furrowing. "The shipping logs from the old harbor sector are still showing discrepancies. The audit from the acquisition five years ago is incomplete."

The mention of the acquisition hit the room like a physical blow.

Ren’s fingers froze against his glass. The acquisition five years ago—at the exact moment his biological reference point, his father, had died in a sudden, violent car accident, allowing Arthur Vance to march in and marry Bianca, seizing the entire rival shipping legacy.

"The records from the previous administration were... chaotic, Mr. Vance," Clara replied smoothly, her eyes flicking toward Ren for a fraction of a second before returning to her tablet. "Many files were lost during the transition after the accident."

The accident.

Ren’s gaze darkened, the playful persona fading for a fraction of a second into something sharp, cold, and lethal. He lived in this house, smiled for Arthur, and bled for Victor, all for one ultimate purpose. He was hunting. Every night he spent in this mansion was an investigation.

Was my father's death really an accident? The question echoed in the dark corners of his mind, heavy and toxic. Or did the man sitting at the head of this table clear the board himself?

"Fix it, Clara," Arthur commanded coldly, dismissing the topic with a wave of his hand. "I don't tolerate incomplete assets."

Arthur’s eyes drifted back down the table, locking onto Ren. A slow, possessive smirk touched the older man's lips, asserting his absolute dominance over the room. "And you, Ren. Make sure you're home early tomorrow night. We have guests arriving, and I expect you to be perfectly compliant."

Ren let his sky-blue shirt catch the light as he leaned back, his eyes glittering with a dangerous, beautiful submission that hid a viper's fangs.

"Of course, Arthur," Ren whispered, his voice smooth as silk, his eyes intentionally drifting to Victor for a split second to watch the CFO's jaw tighten to the breaking point. "I am always exactly what you want me to be."

The dinner continued, a silent battlefield of hidden lust, buried secrets, and corporate warfare. Ren sat at the epicenter of the web, pulling the invisible strings of the wolves around him, completely unaware that tomorrow, on the university campus, a proud scholarship student named Theo was about to collide with his world—and smash his carefully constructed control entirely to pieces.

  The Campus Collision

The iron gates of the university didn't just keep the public out; they locked a specific tier of society in.

The morning sun hit the manicured lawns and stone arches, casting a golden glow over groups of students walking in expensive, tailored casual wear. On this campus, your family's net worth dictated your social rank long before a professor ever looked at your grades.

Ren walked down the main brick pathway, the strap of his designer bag slung carelessly over one shoulder. His sky-blue silk shirt from the night before had been replaced by a loose, oversized cream knit sweater that slipped slightly off his left shoulder, exposing a hint of collarbone. He looked effortlessly soft, a striking contrast to the sharp, cruel thoughts running through his head.

He was running on three hours of sleep, his mind still picking apart the shipping ledger discrepancies Arthur had mentioned at dinner.

Suddenly, a loud burst of mocking laughter broke the morning peace near the courtyard fountain.

Ren paused, his eyes narrowing as he looked over. A crowd had gathered, forming a tight circle around a single figure. At the center of the circle stood three wealthy legacy students, their faces twisted into expressions of pure amusement as they targeted a guy standing by the stone edge of the water.

"Did you get that jacket from a charity bin, freshman?" one of the legacy guys jeered, shoving the guy's shoulder roughly. "Or did the scholarship board hand out rags this year?"

The target of their mockery didn't flinch.

It was Theo.

Theo stood tall, his athletic frame completely steady despite the three guys crowding him. He was wearing a faded denim jacket over a plain black t-shirt, his clothes noticeably worn but impeccably clean. His dark hair was slightly messy, and his jaw was set in a hard, unyielding line. He didn't look intimidated; he looked profoundly bored by their existence.

"Move," Theo said, his voice a low, raspy growl that carried a dangerous amount of weight for a new student. "I have a class to get to."

"Oh, the charity case thinks he can speak to us?" the leader laughed, reaching out to push Theo again.

Before the hand could land, Theo moved with lightning efficiency. He grabbed the guy's wrist, twisted it down, and shoved him back so hard the legacy student stumbled over his own feet, landing hard against the fountain wall.

The crowd gasped.

Ren watched from the fringe, a faint, amused smile returning to his face. A dog with some bite, Ren thought, mildly entertained. Stupid, though. Fighting legacy kids on day one is social suicide here.

Right at that moment, the crowd parted sharply as a hush fell over the courtyard

Grace walked into the clearing, flanked by two of the university's top influencers. On campus, Grace Vance wasn't the bitter girl trapped in a forced engagement; she was royalty. Her expression was ice-cold, her designer blazer immaculate. She wielded her popularity like a weapon, ruling the student body with absolute authority.

"What is happening here?" Grace demanded, her sharp eyes scanning the scene, completely ignoring the guy on the ground and locking onto Theo with deep disgust. "If you want to act like street trash, do it outside the gates."

Theo didn't back down. He picked up his frayed backpack, slinging it over one broad shoulder as he met Grace's icy glare with total defiance. "Tell your dogs to keep their hands to themselves, and you won't have to watch."

Ren’s eyebrows shot up. Nobody spoke to Grace like that.

Amused by the chaos, Ren decided to step closer to get a better look at the idiot who was about to get expelled on his first day. He smoothly stepped around a group of whispering girls, his eyes fixed on the back of Theo's head.

Theo turned sharply, his temper flaring as he tried to leave the suffocating crowd.

He didn't see Ren stepping in behind him.

The collision was sudden and hard. Theo’s broad, solid shoulder slammed straight into Ren’s chest. The force of the impact knocked Ren off balance, his smooth leather shoes slipping on the damp bricks near the fountain. With a sharp gasp, Ren fell backward, his cream sweater catching on the rough stone edge of the fountain as he splashed awkwardly into the shallow, cold water.

The courtyard went completely silent. You could hear a pin drop.

Ren sat in the shallow fountain water, his breath hitching as the freezing liquid immediately soaked through his clothes. His perfectly styled hair was ruined, and his cream sweater was completely drenched, clinging to his skin. For the first time in years, his absolute control had vanished in a split second.

"Are you blind?" Ren snapped, his voice losing its playful purr, turning incredibly sharp and venomous as he glared up from the water.

Theo froze, looking down at the drenched, ethereal guy sitting in the fountain. For a fraction of a second, a strange, unreadable flash crossed Theo's eyes—a flicker of deep confusion, as if his brain was trying to process a puzzle it couldn't solve. But the expression vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, defensive scowl.

"You stepped right behind me," Theo countered coldly, refusing to apologize as he looked down at Ren. "Watch where you're walking next time."

Ren stared up at him, his hands gripping the wet stone.

He was furious. He expected the scholarship kid to tremble, to apologize frantically like everyone else did when they offended a Vance. But as Ren locked eyes with Theo, a bizarre, heavy sensation suddenly slammed into his chest.

It wasn't just anger. It was a jarring, unexplainable wave of familiarity.

Ren’s heart began to hammer against his ribs, a sudden, suffocating feeling of vertigo washing over him. He looked at the sharp line of Theo's jaw, the exact shade of his dark eyes, and the raw, unpolished authority in his posture. Something deep inside Ren's locked, amnesiac mind violently clawed at the surface, screaming that he knew this person.

What is this? Ren thought, his breath turning shallow as a cold sweat broke out under his wet clothes. Why does looking at him make my head hurt? Why does he feel so... strange?

"Ren! Oh my god," Grace’s voice broke the spell, her icy composure cracking into genuine shock as she rushed to the edge of the fountain. She glared at Theo as if he were a criminal. "You are completely finished here. Do you have any idea who he is?"

Theo didn't look at Grace. His eyes stayed locked on Ren for one more lingering, intense second, his brow furrowing slightly as if he, too, felt the bizarre, invisible friction humming between them.

Then, without saying another word, Theo turned on his heel and walked away, his frayed canvas bag slung over his shoulder as he broke through the stunned crowd.

Ren allowed Grace to pull him out of the water, his body shivering from the cold, but his eyes never left Theo's retreating figure. The playful puppet master was gone. In his place was a deeply unsettled, hyper-focused predator.

Theo.

Ren didn't know the guy's name yet, but as he wrung the cold water out of his wet cream sweater, a dark, dangerous determination settled into his core. There was something buried in that scholarship student—something fishy, something hidden—and Ren was going to tear him apart until he found out exactly what it was.
