Prologue

Hi, I'm Charlotte and I'm deaf but I wasn't always like this...as a kid I grew up in a happy family with my parents, my brother, and my sister I was the middle child and I loved them until we went to celebrate my 10th birthday...

FLASHBACK...

"Honey, wake up", said my mother with a warm smile. I rubbed my eyes as I begin to stretch my limbs, "Good Morning Mama!" I said with a bright face. "Do you know what day it is?", she asked in a teasing manner.

"It's my Birthday!", I said with excitement.

I ran downstairs to meet my Father eating his breakfast before going to work, "Daddy! Do you know what day it is?", I asked with a mischievous expression. "Hm? I don't know sweetie, What day is it?" he asked. I looked at him with a disappointed face "Dad doesn't remember what day it is today...", I said with a sulking face. "Haha, I'm just kidding! How could I ever forget my Princess' Birthday?", he grabbed me by my waist and lifted me in the air, my face lifted up as he threw me into the air, "Hahahahahaha I'm flying!" I said with complete joy. Both of them giggled as I was in the air.

Jordan and Elise came down from the stairs with a big smile. "Happy Birthday big sister!", said Elise, "Happy Birthday Charlotte", said Jordan. I asked Dad to let me down to thank my siblings and he let me down I ran to them and gave them a big hug, "Thank you Brother thank you sis", I thanked them whole heartedly and gave them both kisses.

The day went by quickly and it was already 3:00 pm in the afternoon, Mama said we would go on a trip once Daddy gets home, 30 minutes later I hear the door opened I rushed downstairs from my bedroom and expected Dad to be there but it wasn't him it was our neighbors, Aunt Linda and Uncle Mike they came to our home to give me a red packet for my birthday I said thank you and walked back to my room.

An hour and a half passed but dad is still not home I started to get anxious about my surprise whether it would even happen or not I went to my brother's room to play with him while time passed just then I hear the bells ring, I got up immediately and rushed downstairs It was Daddy! Tears started to form as I see him go through the door, "You're late, I thought we aren't going to celebrate my birthday anymore", tears started to shed as I gave him my soft punches he sincerely apologized and said, "Daddy is sorry, will you forgive me if we went on a trip now?", I nodded before I realized his situation.

We went inside the car and we drove of to the surprise place not before long we were on the highway I fell asleep...and life took a turn--

I remember waking up not feeling anything from my body, there were a lot of people surrounding us and I saw blue and red lights, my vision was getting blurry as I was carried in the ambulance I lost my consciousness bit by bit and I...blacked out...

I remember waking up, barely feeling anything, people in white gowns stood surrounding me, their faces flushed with concern under their blue masks. I couldn't feel anything. Everything was numb. I remember the shock of silence. Blue and red lights flashed, reaching the corner of my vision, blinding me, but I never heard the sirens. I wondered why.

My vision blurred as I was carried into an ambulance. The scent of alcohol and clean bandages wafted around me. I tried to open my mouth to say, "Where is mama? And papa?" But it felt as if my head was underwater. I flailed around, the silence engulfing me. I was scared. Why couldn't I hear the police sirens? The frantic voices of the nurses handling me? The shouts of the officers?

I felt a pinch in my arm as something was injected into me. I lost consciousness, bit by bit, and fell into a restless slumber.
