Sandbox

... In southern South Korea, a 7 year old boy plays outside alone in a sandbox that was built into his tiny front yard. His house was small and only had two rooms, one for his mother, the other for storage. ...

Gumi plays alone all the time. Everyday when he comes home from school he plays outside with his one sand shovel and a butter knife he found on the side of the road one day.

The shovel for digging, and butter knife for smoothing the sand to make a nice house. Gumi was fairly happy, he didn’t mind the loneliness and isolation he had. His mother was always gone, especially at night, so Gumi was happy.

His mother, he doesn’t know her name, but she’s comes and goes. Gumi takes care of himself when he can, finds his own food and gets a free lunch from his school because of his almost zero income. His room, is the storage room. He sleeps on a tiny, stained toddler mattress with no sheets or blankets. He uses a balled up bunch of dirty clothes as a pillow.

Gumi doesn’t care, he doesn’t know that this is unusual for children to live like.

...ΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩ...

...The wind was high and gumi duh around in his sand box, burying rocks and weird things he finds when he walks home from school. It’s the start of fall, still slightly warm but the wind was strong. ...

Gumi’s house is actually quite close to a busy road, and on the other side a large beautiful forest.

The wind picks up and cars speed by.

Gumi starts to get cold as he turns his head twords the woods.

He gets a cold chill and resumes his play.

The sun is suddenly blocked by a large figure, a person. Gumi did not hear them walk up to him but they don’t look down on him.

Gumi looks up and notices how strangely they are dressed, a long black coat with a hood hiding their face and very strange boots.

“Hello!” Gumi smiles and greets the stranger... very cheerfully he looks up at them.

The stranger gets on their knees to Gumi’s level and removes their hood, a very alien like person looks at Gumi with a soft expression.

“Hello!” Gumi says again.

Still no responds the stranger hands out their hand, they are pale, long white hair and bright red eyes.

Nothing in their hand Gumi looks at the hand confused and instantly thinks of a friendly gesture.

Gumi hands the stranger their only toy shovel. It’s tiny and red. The stranger jumps and their face shows shock, staring at the shovel and back at Gumi who is smiling and wanting to make friends.

As fast as the wind the stranger is gone, with Gumi’s shovel.
