The Battle That changed all

Its 8:30 in the morning and a single piercing, female scream cuts through the morning drowsiness. I run out of my house still in my nightclothes only to witness chaos. The houses in the village are burning,and countless dead friends lay on the streets, Soldiers numbered in the hundreds marching in the streets in a sick death beat of every boot hitting the ground. Seeing this made my 13 year old stomach churn. Before even thinking about it I ran. I ran faster than I ever have before. I ran like my life depended on how far I got. And it probably did. As I was running a solitary soldier found me. I fought the soldier with a wooden stick from a broken cart I had found close by. By some miracle I won, But I was beaten and bloodied by the end of it. I made my way to the school house only to find it burnt down. The fires mostly out but still a bit here and there. I walked closer and a very large, burning support beam gave way trapping my arm underneath it. I pulled with all my strength but it wasn't enough to get my left arm free. I thought “if only I was a boy I may have more strength and I could get out of here”, but with one last  pull my arm came free. It was almost pure black from being burnt and was slightly smoking but it was still attached. I wrapped it in a large piece of cloth I had picked up on my way here. I moved a few feet away facing the edge of the hill the school rested on overlooking the village. It was a sea of fire. Everything was burning and for some odd reason I found it was breathtakingly beautiful. I then seen a soldier coming up the hill and I had no energy to fight back. When he seen me, he pulled a pistol from his waistcoat, The pistol must’ve meant he was a high ranking officer, and I saw a flash, a loud bang and then darkness. The darkness was so thick I felt I could drown in it then a small point of light appears in the distance. I frantically make my way to it as it grows larger Isee a large grassy field and in it was my village. Everyone was there. My friends and family were closer to the front, everyone else behind them, My best friend was in the front. The light patch was about the size of a window and I start climbing through, until my friends voice stops me, He said "No don't come through. We won't accept you yet. We don't want you. It's not your time so come back later, Live for all of us please" And with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes I turn away saying " I’ll be back, But not too soon " I climb back through the window sized hole and turn my back as I heard my father dimley say "That's my girl. She always knows what to do"

I wake up back where I was shot to see the high ranking soldier dead on the ground. His gun smoking still and a bullet wound in his temple. He committed suicide from the guilt of what he did today. I look down at my chest and see why I was still alive, instead of a bullet wound I see a warped piece of metal, the locket. A gift from my friend on my last birthday. I giggle a little out loud and say "Seems like you have saved my life twice this hour huh?" I start walking off in the direction of the closest village I knew of. It is now many years later and I have rebuilt the village with the help of neighboring villages. I am old and wrinkled but everyday I go sit up on the hill that the old school sat on. Hoping that when I die, I'll die there so that I won't feel like I cheated death. It was many days more than anyone could count until I did pass on. Then the blackness came back but it was comforting not constricting. This time the light grew faster and didn’t stop growing until it was the size of a doorway. When I stepped through it there were tears of happiness and hugs all around. Then I saw my friend again and when he spoke he said "Hey you've changed a bit over the years" At that point I was crying as I said "Yeah but you haven't changed a bit. And I'm glad"
