Two Worlds

"So it's like they can live forever?"

That's what I asked my grand mother as she told us about those amazing creatures called humans.

"Chila what are you talking about? They don't live forever. Weren't you listening? They live short lives!"

"But... big sister Terea grandma said they have an eternal soul."

We are not allowed to see the surface until we turn sixteen, but I've always heard about them; those who live above the creatures with an eternal soul.

We (my kind) can live up to four hundred even six hundred years old and we do not age as fast as those who live above. Our kind has always lived a harmonious and secluded existence for thousands of years. Our elders said that the peace we have is because we don't interact with those who live above.

Although my kind can live a long life our existence end with our bodies. When we die our souls turn into bubbles, along with our bodies and the memories of our long lives.

The thought of that always scares me, also isn't it sad? When we die we're gone, our thought may live on through the ones we leave behind but when it ends it just ends. I don't want to just disappear.

"What is six hundred years of life if I just live in this seclusion? What is it like above our world? What kind of people live up there? And what is an eternal soul?"

I love hearing stories about the world above (regardless how limited as they are). Although I'm not yet allowed to explore the surface sometimes little trinkets find their way to me. I've started collecting them little by little. I don't really know what they are but I think the more items I get the more I can decipher what this things are for and maybe even what it's like above.

I hid my collection to everyone of course. Although at a certain point we are allowed to go to the surface, any contact with those who live above is forbidden. Endangering our peaceful seclusion is punishable by death. The little knowledge we have about the world above are from those of us that were able to see close enough without being seen and those that loss their lives doing so.

Most of my kind don't even fully go above, they said that the heat from the sun's rays touching their skin is good enough. I don't think I'll be the same though.

"I wonder how close I can get to it? To that mysterious world above. I wonder how far I can see through that world without being seen? I wonder what I'll see? Will I be able to see them? those that are called humans. If they see me I wonder what they'll think? Will they think the same as me?"

Those are the questions I ask myself. How far can my questions take me? I just can't wait.
