Heaven was quiet the morning Ariel first felt the tremor.
A gust of scorching air split the cloud plains, something tearing its way upward from the mortal realm. Angels turned their bright faces toward the disturbance as if expecting war, but Ariel felt something different—something like a heartbeat. A pull.
And then he appeared.
A demon with wings of smoldering obsidian, rising through forbidden skies as if gravity itself bent to him. His landing shook the air, scattering feathers and embers.
Ariel’s world tilted.
The demon lifted his head, molten-gold eyes locking onto Ariel’s. Not with hostility.
With interest.
That was the moment everything began.
