The Portrait

It is a beautiful spring season, a time when flowers bloom everywhere. Grandpa Zion and his grandson Joseph are planting flowers in their vast field. Joseph, who is 17 years old, notices how different life is now in the year 2000 compared to the old times his grandfather always talks about. He tells Zion about modern machines and tools that make work much easier today.

Joseph is very worried about his grandfather. He asks why Zion still chooses to stay and work hard in this faraway field instead of living comfortably in the city with modern conveniences. He wonders why Zion spends every morning and afternoon talking to and caring for only one kind of flower — the Daisy. Joseph pleads with him to rest and use machines, because he is afraid his grandfather might get sick or hurt, especially when he is left alone while Joseph is at school.
