Chapter 4: The First Meeting

The next morning, Lyra woke up feeling lighter than usual.

For the first time since receiving her second chance, she felt as though she was moving toward something instead of running away from something.

After getting ready, she opened her notebook.

At the top of the page were the words she had written yesterday.

Build a New Life.

A small smile appeared on her face.

She was about to close the notebook when her phone vibrated.

The mysterious group chat.

Lyra quickly opened it.

A new message had appeared.

Unknown Sender:

Not everyone who returned remembers everything.

The group instantly became active.

Kael Orion:

What kind of cryptic nonsense is that?

Elara Roselyn:

I don't think it's nonsense.

Lucien Valerius:

Agreed.

Lyra Celeste:

Does anyone know what it means?

No answer came.

The message remained there like an unsolved puzzle.

Eventually, everyone stopped talking.

Lyra slipped her phone into her bag.

She would think about it later.

For now, she had school.

The walk started peacefully.

The morning air was cool.

Birds sang from nearby trees.

For a moment, she almost forgot everything.

Then she saw the school building.

Her footsteps slowed.

The memories returned immediately.

The whispers.

The laughter.

The loneliness.

Her fingers tightened around her bag.

A familiar fear tried to crawl back into her heart.

But Lyra shook her head.

"No."

That was her old life.

This was her second chance.

She took a deep breath and continued forward.

Suddenly-

Someone stepped directly into her path.

Both of them stopped.

Lyra blinked.

The boy standing in front of her seemed equally surprised.

Dark hair.

Sharp eyes.

A slightly annoyed expression.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Lyra's eyes widened.

"No way."

The boy frowned.

"...Lyra?"

Her jaw dropped.

"Kael?"

An awkward silence followed.

Neither of them had expected this.

Of all the schools.

Of all the places.

It had to be here.

Kael looked her up and down.

"You look different."

Lyra immediately frowned.

"That's the first thing you say?"

"What?"

"You could have said hello."

Kael shrugged.

"Hello."

His completely expressionless greeting somehow made it worse.

Lyra groaned.

"You are exactly how I imagined."

"And how is that?"

"Annoying."

Kael looked offended.

"Says the person who overthinks everything."

"I do not overthink."

"You absolutely do."

"I don't."

"You do."

They stared at each other.

Neither willing to back down.

Finally, Kael sighed.

"This is why group chats are better."

Lyra nodded immediately.

"Agreed."

Another awkward silence followed.

Neither knew what to say next.

Talking through messages had always been easier.

Meeting face-to-face was completely different.

Eventually Kael shoved his hands into his pockets.

"Well... see you around, I guess."

"I guess."

...

...

Neither sounded particularly enthusiastic.

Kael walked away first.

Lyra watched him disappear into the school building.

What a strange person.

At almost the same moment, Kael thought:

She's even more stubborn in real life.

Neither had a particularly good first impression of the other.

But neither of them realized that this awkward meeting would become the beginning of an unexpected friendship.

And perhaps something much more important in the future.

The classroom buzzed with curiosity as the teacher entered.

Behind her stood a familiar figure.

Lyra froze.

No way.

Kael looked equally surprised.

For a brief moment, their eyes met.

The same thought crossed both their minds.

What is he doing here?

The teacher smiled.

"Class, we have a new transfer student joining us today."

Several students immediately became interested.

The girls whispered among themselves.

Some boys looked curious.

The teacher turned toward him.

"Please introduce yourself."

Kael stepped forward.

"My name is Kael Orion."

The classroom erupted into quiet chatter.

Lyra slowly lowered her head onto her desk.

Of all the schools.

Of all the classrooms.

Why here?

Why now?

The teacher glanced around the room.

Then her eyes landed on an empty seat.

Right beside Lyra.

"Kael, you'll sit there."

The entire classroom turned toward the empty desk.

Lyra's eyes widened.

Kael's expression darkened immediately.

"No."

The teacher blinked.

"What?"

Kael pointed at the seat.

"I mean... okay."

A few students laughed.

The teacher raised an eyebrow.

"Please take your seat."

With the expression of a man walking toward his execution, Kael walked down the aisle.

Lyra watched him approach.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Every step somehow made the situation worse.

Finally, he sat down.

Neither spoke.

Neither looked at the other.

An awkward silence settled between them.

After several seconds, Kael quietly muttered,

"This is your fault."

Lyra immediately turned toward him.

"My fault?"

"You're the protagonist."

"What does that even mean?"

"Things like this always happen to protagonists."

Lyra stared at him.

Kael stared back.

Then both looked away.

Neither willing to continue the conversation.

The teacher began the lesson.

Several minutes passed.

Lyra focused on her notes.

Beside her, Kael appeared completely uninterested in class.

Then she noticed something.

His notebook.

It was completely blank.

Not a single word.

Not a single note.

Lyra frowned.

"Weren't you listening?"

Kael shrugged.

"I already know this."

"You sound arrogant."

"I am arrogant."

Lyra blinked.

At least he's honest.

For the first time, a small smile threatened to appear.

Kael noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You smiled."

"I didn't."

"You did."

"I didn't."

"You definitely did."

Lyra immediately looked away.

This time, Kael was the one trying not to smile.

The lesson continued.

Neither of them realized it yet.

But this awkward arrangement would slowly become one of the most important relationships in both of their second lives.

...

...

The physics class finally came to an end.

As soon as the teacher left, students began chatting among themselves.

Beside her, Kael stretched lazily.

At that moment, a familiar voice echoed inside their minds.

Elara.

"So? How did the first meeting go?"

Lyra nearly choked.

Kael rolled his eyes.

"It was terrible."

"It was not terrible."

"It was."

"You were the problem."

"You started it."

Several voices immediately joined the conversation.

Lucien sighed.

"You two have known each other for less than a day."

"And you're already arguing."

"We're not arguing," Lyra and Kael said simultaneously.

A brief silence followed.

Then Elara laughed.

The telepathic connection faded shortly afterward.

Lunch break soon arrived.

Lyra quietly gathered her books and prepared to leave the classroom.

Unfortunately, several students were already waiting.

The moment she stepped into the corridor, they surrounded her.

The familiar faces made her stomach tighten.

In her previous life, these same students had mocked her endlessly.

One of them smirked.

"Look who finally decided to show up."

Another laughed.

"What happened, Lyra?"

"Found yourself a bodyguard?"

The girl glanced toward Kael.

"Oh, I get it."

"Is she your new punching bag?"

The group burst into laughter.

Lyra remained silent.

Not because she was afraid.

But because she was disappointed.

Even after all these years.

Even after everything.

They still acted like children.

Kael slowly stepped forward.

The laughter gradually died.

His expression was calm.

Dangerously calm.

He looked at each of them.

One by one.

Then he spoke.

"Are you finished?"

The students blinked.

His voice wasn't loud.

Yet every word felt heavy.

"You know, I expected better."

No one answered.

Kael folded his arms.

"Do you have hobbies?"

The students looked confused.

"What?"

"I asked if you have hobbies."

"Or do you spend your free time making other people's lives miserable?"

Their faces immediately changed.

"You think this is funny?"

"You think humiliating someone makes you look strong?"

His eyes sharpened.

"It doesn't."

"It makes you look pathetic."

The corridor fell silent.

Several students lowered their gazes.

Kael continued.

"People who are confident don't need victims."

"People who are happy don't need targets."

"The fact that you're still doing this says more about you than it does about her."

No one laughed anymore.

The confidence they had moments ago was gone.

For the first time, they looked uncomfortable.

Ashamed.

Guilty.

But before anyone could speak-

Lyra stepped forward.

Her voice was quiet.

Yet it carried years of pain.

Years of anger.

Years of disappointment.

"You know what's funny?"

Everyone turned toward her.

Lyra met their eyes directly.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Only determination.

"For years, I kept asking myself what I did wrong."

"I thought there was something wrong with me."

"I thought if I changed enough, maybe you'd finally treat me like a human being."

Her hands clenched slightly.

"But now I understand."

A bitter smile appeared on her face.

"The problem was never me."

Several students looked away.

Unable to meet her gaze.

Lyra continued.

"You mocked me because it was easy."

"You hurt me because I didn't fight back."

"You enjoyed watching someone suffer."

Her voice trembled slightly.

Not from fear.

But from fury.

"And do you know what hurts the most?"

"I actually wanted your approval."

The students looked stunned.

Lyra shook her head.

"Not anymore."

Her eyes were cold.

Colder than they had ever seen.

"You don't get to decide my worth."

"You don't get to decide who I am."

"And you certainly don't get to control my future."

The corridor became completely silent.

No one knew what to say.

The confidence they once had was gone.

Replaced by shame.

By guilt.

By the realization that their actions had consequences.

Lyra took a deep breath.

Then she turned away.

"Come on, Kael."

Kael stared at her for a moment.

Then a small smile appeared on his face.

"Yeah."

Together, they walked away.

Behind them, nobody laughed.

Nobody mocked.

Nobody said a single word.

For the first time in her life, Lyra didn't feel like a victim.

And for the first time, the people who had hurt her were forced to face themselves.

The incident spread through the school far faster than Lyra expected.

By the end of the day, almost everyone had heard about it.

The students who had bullied her seemed unusually quiet.

Gone were their mocking smiles.

Gone was their confidence.

For the first time, they appeared uncomfortable.

Ashamed.

The following afternoon, Lyra was organizing her books when several hesitant voices stopped her.

"Lyra..."

She looked up.

The same students stood before her.

No insults.

No laughter.

No mocking expressions.

Just nervousness.

One of the girls lowered her head.

"We wanted to apologize."

Silence followed.

Lyra simply looked at them.

The group exchanged uneasy glances.

Another student stepped forward.

"We know this doesn't erase what we did."

"We were cruel."

"We hurt you."

"We thought it was funny."

His voice trembled.

"But it wasn't."

"We're sorry."

The others quickly nodded.

"We really are."

For several moments, Lyra said nothing.

The old Lyra would have immediately accepted.

The old Lyra would have desperately wanted their approval.

The old Lyra would have been happy just to be acknowledged.

But that Lyra no longer existed.

She studied their faces.

Some looked guilty.

Some looked embarrassed.

Some couldn't even meet her eyes.

A strange sadness settled in her chest.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Just disappointment.

It had taken dying.

It had taken a second chance.

It had taken years of pain.

Only then had they finally realized what they had done.

Lyra slowly exhaled.

"I accept your apology."

Relief immediately appeared on their faces.

But before anyone could celebrate, Lyra continued.

"I forgive you."

The relief grew stronger.

Then she spoke again.

"But that doesn't mean we're friends."

The smiles disappeared.

Lyra's voice remained calm.

Not cold.

Not cruel.

Simply honest.

"You hurt me for years."

"You don't get to erase that with one apology."

Several students lowered their heads.

"I don't hate you."

"I don't want revenge."

"And if you need help with schoolwork or something important, I'll help if I can."

The students looked surprised.

"But that's all."

Lyra tightened her grip on her books.

"I'm moving forward."

"And I don't want to go back."

No one argued.

Because they knew she was right.

Trust wasn't something that could be rebuilt in a single day.

One of the girls wiped her eyes.

"We understand."

Another student nodded.

"You don't owe us friendship."

Lyra gave a small nod.

For the first time, the conversation ended without bitterness.

Without tears.

Without resentment.

Simply acceptance.

After they left, Kael appeared beside her.

Apparently he had been listening.

His expression was unusually thoughtful.

"You've changed."

Lyra looked at him.

"I know."

...

...

Kael leaned against the nearby wall.

"The old you would've let them walk all over you again."

Lyra laughed softly.

"A little harsh."

"It's true."

She couldn't even argue with that.

Kael folded his arms.

"You know, I'm impressed."

Lyra blinked.

"You are?"

"Don't make me repeat it."

A small smile appeared on her face.

Kael looked away immediately.

Embarrassed.

"I just mean..."

He paused.

Then continued more quietly.

"You didn't let your past control you."

The words surprised her.

Because they came from someone who understood exactly what she was going through.

Someone who had also been given a second chance.

Kael stared out the classroom window.

"I think that's what we're all trying to do."

Lyra followed his gaze.

The afternoon sunlight painted the sky gold.

The future still felt uncertain.

There were still wounds that needed healing.

There were still mistakes that needed fixing.

But for the first time, she felt hopeful.

And beside her, Kael felt the same.

Neither of them had completely escaped their past.

But both had finally started walking away from it.

One step at a time.
