She was our leader, not a dictator who tells you only what to do and solve any problem that you came upon by yourself. No, she was a leader who showed us exactly what to do and helps us in every way she can.
She loved her co workers up to their parents and their children. She was the type to invite everyone’s family in weekend gatherings and holiday celebrations in our office, and would give them gifts and a special bonus afterwards.
But recently, it was obvious she faced a huge problem that made her resign for the meantime. We wondered why, all of us. Was there something wrong with the way we treat her? Or does it have to do with her personal life?
And just a few minutes after she announced her resignation she passed out on her office. We immediately called an ambulance, and followed her to the hospital after work.
We were all curious on how she passed out, then I had a hunch. “Was she pregnant? I mean she did have a boyfriend.”, and with reassurance from an eyewitness... our guesses were confirmed, with still a little bit of insecurity.
We stepped in the hospital and asked for her room nunmber, we still don’t know what we’ll say after seeing her in a whole other condition than what we see from work.
We talked to each other, she was unexpectedly very open. We all know that we can trust her with our problems and she can also feel the same with us.
Everything seemed fine after that, but a tragedy came through her way. I was only about to finish my biggest story for our paper but came across a new one to add to it.
Not even 3 months have passed after her resignation Ms.C. had a miscarriage. We can’t face her yet, we weren’t prepared. Her family also said not to see her for a while because they won’t be sure what will be the result after.
I still had contact with her but won’t tell the others because I don’t have her permission. I found
out something about her personal life that she told me personally before she passed out on her office that day.
Ms.C. and her boyfriend weren’t able to get married yet, because they parted ways due to their parents relationship which they prioritised over their own.
It was truly heart braking, but they made their decision.
You thought that was the only sad thing about her life? Not yet, I’m still not finished....
Ms.C. and I met up at a Cafe as she requested. We talked as if nothing happened and everything was fine.
She smiled towards our whole conversation, which made me feel uneasy.
“Ma’am? Okay lang po ba talaga kayo? Sorry to bring it up now, but I’m worried. Please don’t keep it bottled up inside. You’ve helped our co workers through so much. Let me help you.”,
“Rachel, with or without your help I’ll stay being myself. Nothing can ruin me. Not a miscarriage and not even a break up. Ask ko nga lang ha. Matatandaan mo pa ba ako kahit sumikat ka na sa pagiging magaling mo sa pagsusulat?”,
“Bakit naman po kita kakalimutan? Your my biggest ally and friend. Walang makakalimot sa inyo.”,
“Can you write something for me one day?”
“Of course po. You’ll be forever remembered.”,
“Hay nako! Kain ka na nga lang. At tsaka may check up pa ako mamaya kaya bilisan na natin.”,
We laughed after that serious conversation too.
Another month and a half she was posting on her social media accounts while travelling, which made us guess that she was fine. We were commenting our best wishes, our “We Miss You!” messages and our “We’re so proud of you!”.
But after she got home from Laguna our Head Department Leader announced a terrible news that made us question and doubt ourselves.
She stepped in our office with tears in her eyes.
“Uhmmm.... gather po muna tayong lahat at, magdasal.”.
After we prayed, she told us why she was in our office in the first place.
“Kahapon ng 2 o’clock ay iniwan na tayo ng dati nating katrabaho na si Ms. Christina Lopez. She was having hard time with her miscarriage and the fact that her long time boyfriend cheated on her with her own sister. She was probably tired, which made her take her own life. You can still visit her until sunday at their residence. Please send your last regards and wishes. That’s all. You can go back to work now.”,
Why didn’t she say anything? We were all stunned, we blamed ourselves. I couldn’t send my regards that well when I visited her. So as I promised I wrote her a story to officiate our friendship and my promise.
Ms.C. we all mis you. We blamed ourselves but we knew you well. We know you would say that it wasn’t our fault, they made their choice and you respected it. You’re just being respectful, what’s so wrong with that?
You gave us an important message, we appreciate you. We always will, we bid you farewell.
