Chapter 3: The Rainy Afternoon Shift

By four o’clock, the sky over the school courtyard had turned the color of bruised slate. The morning breeze had morphed into a heavy, damp chill, and by the time the final bell chimed, rain was hammering against the glass of Room 204 in relentless sheets.

Maya stood inside the glass double doors of the main entrance, watching the deluge transform the parking lot into a sea of murky puddles. A few brave students had sprinted for their cars, jackets pulled over their heads, but most were crowded in the foyer, waiting out the storm.

"No umbrella?"

Maya turned. Julian was standing beside her, adjusting the strap of his gym bag over his shoulder. He was wearing a dark navy rain jacket, his hair still slightly rumpled from afternoon practice.

"I checked the forecast this morning," Maya admitted, watching a splash hit the glass, "and it promised 'partly cloudy.' I should have known better."

Julian smiled, reaching into the side pocket of his bag and pulling out a simple black umbrella. "I always keep one in my locker. Perk of having an older sister who used to drag me through rainstorms on the walk home."

He stepped toward the heavy glass doors and pushed one open, the cold, wet air rushing in to meet them. "Come on. I’ll walk you to the bus stop."

"Are you sure? It's out of your way," Maya said, taking a tentative step out under the small concrete overhang.

"It’s four blocks, Maya," he said, popping the umbrella open with a sharp, hollow click. He stepped out into the pour and held it high enough for both of them, looking back over his shoulder. "Unless you'd rather wait here until six?"

Maya looked at the overflowing gutters, then at Julian standing in the downpour, holding out a dry spot just for her. She smiled, stepping under the black canopy beside him.

The space under the umbrella was surprisingly small. Their shoulders brushed lightly with every step, a soft, constant contact that made the cold rain feel strangely distant. The drumming sound of water against the fabric above them created a small, private world, cutting off the noise of the street traffic and the distant chatter of the school behind them.

"So," Julian said, his voice quiet over the sound of the rain, "your sister—does she still drag you through rainstorms?"

Maya laughed. "No, she’s actually away at college now. But when we were younger, she used to make me do all the errands when it rained because she claimed she was 'allergic to precipitation.'"

"Classic older sibling move," Julian said, a quiet warmth in his voice. "My brother used to steal my lunch money and tell me it was an 'administrative tax.'"

They walked down the slick sidewalk, navigating around deep puddles and fallen autumn leaves plastered to the concrete. Every few steps, their arms would brush again, and neither of them pulled away.

As they neared the blue glass canopy of the bus shelter, the rain began to taper off into a soft mist. Julian stopped just outside the shelter, holding the umbrella over Maya while she stepped under the dry overhang.

He brought the umbrella down a fraction, his dark eyes fixing on hers. "Made it in one piece."

"Thanks to you," Maya said, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "I owe you another pen. Or maybe a coffee."

"I'll take the coffee," Julian said without hesitation, a familiar crooked smile touching his lips. He hesitated for a second, lingering by the curb even as the distant rumble of the approaching bus echoed down the street. "Tomorrow after fifth period?"

"Tomorrow after fifth period," Maya agreed softly.

The bus pulled up to the curb with a hiss of air brakes, its doors folding open. Maya took a step onto the bottom stair, turning back just before stepping inside. Julian was still standing under the dripping streetlight, the black umbrella resting lightly against his shoulder, watching her with a quiet, steady gaze as the doors closed between them.
