The neon sign in the window of the corner diner hummed with a low, steady buzz that matched the dull throb in Maya’s temples. It was 8:30 PM on a Thursday, and the table between them was a war zone of open index cards, highlighter caps, and two empty mugs of cold drip coffee.
Midterm week had descended on the school like a heavy fog, turning the hallways into a quiet procession of exhausted teenagers clutching flashcards.
"Ask me another one," Julian mumbled, resting his forehead directly against the cool surface of his open European History textbook. His voice came out muffled against the pages detailing the Treaty of Versailles. "Make it an easy one before my brain officially short-circuits."
Maya smiled, leaning back against the red vinyl booth and tapping her pen against her chin. "Fine. What year was the League of Nations established?"
Julian didn't lift his head, but his right hand blindly reached across the table, his fingers searching until they brushed against her mug. "1920. Please tell me I'm right."
"You're right," Maya said softly, her eyes dropping to where his hand had come to rest on the tabletop, just inches from hers. "See? You actually know this stuff."
Julian finally lifted his head, a wry grin tugging at his mouth. His eyes were tired, but when he looked at her, the usual warm spark was there. "I only know it because you’ve been drilling me on it for two hours. If I pass this exam tomorrow, Mr. Henderson owes you a cut of his salary."
"I'll take payment in french fries instead," she countered, sliding a remaining golden fry from the red plastic basket between them.
"Deal," he said instantly.
He didn't pull his hand back. Instead, his fingers shifted, brushing lightly over the knuckles of her left hand. The simple, unhurried gesture sent a sudden rush of heat straight through the chilly diner air, making Maya’s breath hitch in her throat.
For a long moment, the hum of the neon sign and the quiet clatter of dishes in the kitchen faded into white noise. The space between them, across a sticky laminate table littered with history notes, felt electric.
"Maya," Julian said, his voice dropping low, losing its playful edge. His eyes were steady, fixed on hers with an intensity that made her heart hammer against her ribs. "Thanks for staying out late with me. I know you had your own studying to do."
"I wanted to be here," Maya admitted quietly, her thumb grazing the back of his hand in return. "It's... better studying together."
Julian’s smile softened into something real and unguarded. He squeezed her hand gently, his thumb tracing a tiny circle over her skin, before finally letting go to cap his pen.
"Come on," he said, standing up and grabbing his heavy jacket. "Let's get out of here before you fall asleep in your coffee. I'm walking you home."
