Taehyung moved his jaw, wincing every time it ached. He knew his face is probably messed up thanks to the cops who weren’t in the mood of being gentle with him. Now that he was out of the police station, he was finally feeling the brunt of the night. He exhaled the cold chilly air, the task difficult to his bones, so he let out a groan.
Shoving his hands in his pant pockets, he pulled out his cigarette pack. At the sight of the burning stick, Taehyung released a breath that he didn’t know he was holding. He then searched for his lighter, frown creasing upon his eyebrows, when he couldn’t find it. His mood was again dulling and he was almost at the edge of screaming. To whom? He has no idea, he is sure there is no one to care about his frustration.
Just as he was about to give up, a pair of foot stood beside him, and in an instant his nose sniffed the scent of burning smoke, deeper than charcoal and very lethal. The smoke was intoxicating, calling out to Taehyung, to have a taste. So Taehyung turned, his face forming the shape of innocence and civility, but soon the colour drained out of his smooth honey like handsome feature, when his eyes met with the chief police of this city. The same chief who was cursing and beating him few hours ago, before he was asked to leave disheartenedly.
Nevermind, Taehyung had a task and he wished to fulfilll it. So he gulped the saliva that was mixed with his own blood, and spoke in his deep and groggy voice. The task of speaking itself was too much to bear, but nothing that Taehyung can’t handle it. He has seen the worst, lived the worst.
“Ajhussi, do you perhaps have a lighter?,” the question came out innocently but the chief scoffed at him, but nonetheless offered his lighter to Taehyung. The man in his late-20s didn’t waste further time, grabbed the lighter and lit his cigarette. Taehyung released a sharp smoke with a sigh.
But soon the chief’s voice thundered in his ears. “I don’t understand, why jungkookshi even let you go. If I was in his place, I would have ensured you stayed in jail for life. Young lad, you should be grateful of jungkookshi for saving you,” the chief rambled angrily but kept smoking from his own cigarette.
Guilt washed over Taehyung! He knew what he did tonight was wrong. He realised it, the moment those painful eyes of the star painter apologised to him. Jungkook didn’t care about his losses, he was simply sad and guilty, that tells a lot about his character. Taehyung realised the elder man wasn’t bad as he assumed, in fact, he realised Jungkook was genuinely shocked and extremely sad about his life story. The painter showed compassion and forgiveness to Taehyung, even when he didn’t have to.
Jungkook had every right to put him behind bars. It wasn’t his fault that his father decided to suicide because he couldn’t bear the stress. In a way, his father was wrong to leave his only son to become the victim of loan sharks, at such an young age. Jungkook couldn’t have predicted the result of his action. It was a choice of his own father to leave him alone.
So he had no right to go on a rampage of destroying jungkook’s most expensive paintings. Taehyung exhaled with a guilt, he realised he not only destroyed the paintings but the art gallery too. And let’s not forget, he almost killed jungkook tonight in his revenge-hungry mindset.
Taehyung wasn’t a bad man. He never harmed anyone, neither took unnecessary risks in his life. He is a survivor, an optimist and someone who wishes to live a life of better and stress free future. Take note, he can very well protect himself and the people around him, like that he is a zealous and fearless man. But Taehyung never harmed anyone or their property because he was sad, angry and drunk. So he does feel guilty!
“I do feel guilty, I am not that kind of a man. A man who is ruthless and hurtful,” Taehyung voiced out more to himself. He completely forgot about the chief cop who took a sigh too after listening to him.
The chief spoke while patting Taehyung’s head, surprising both of them. “It’s okay, just don’t do something like this again. You look like a man with good dreams, so focus on doing good to yourself. Learn from this mistake?”
To the cop it felt like an elder sharing his opinion to a youngster, but to Taehyung, it felt like a fatherly pat who wants him to do good in life instead of bad. So Taehyung’s eyes welled up, but he sucked back his tears, he wasn’t good in being emotional infront of a stranger anyway. And so he nodded with a warm genuine smile. The chief cop smiled before returning back to the police station.
After taking few good minutes, Taehyung eventually finished his cigarette. He then sat at one of the bench opposite the police station. The night was only getting out of control, so cold that his aching bone shivered at every movement. He kept breathing through his mouth as he dialled a number on his phone.
He could hear the rings from the side of the line.
————-
Somewhere in a small apartment, the sound of phone rang like the pitter patter of rains, disturbing the peace of a room and a couple who was lost in their dream land, cuddled up in a bundle of blanket. One of the man, groaned and nudged the other to wake up, the other groaned back.
“Let me sleep,” the other man growled in his sleep and turned the other way. The man who held him few seconds ago, once again nudged the other man, “your phone is ringing..”
“yeoboseyo, your order is getting ready, give me two minutes sir,” the other man spoke to no one in particular, while the phone kept ringing. Finally, one of them sat up, with disheveled hair and irritated features. “Jimin, pick up your damn phone. It’s 4 am for godsake.” The man groaned and tried to reach the phone from the other side.
The man frowned at the caller id. “It’s Taehyung.” He said. Jimin, the other man, immediately sat up and grabbed the phone, pushing the button to answer it. The man stared at Jimin, he looked rather cute with his bed hair, his starry eyes which are usually small was wide and his lips jutted out in a pout. The man smiled at the adorable sight of his boyfriend. Speaking of the boyfriend, Jimin leaned and kissed the man’s cheek, “thanks Yoongles baby, I was so worried about this fcker. Let me talk to him.”
Jimin got down of the bed, and started to pace around the bed, in his cute pink pajamas and messy hair that looked like a wild field on his forehead. The man named Yoongi sat straight as he admired his boyfriend, his lips forming a gummy smile in awe.
“You, b!tch, where are you? I called you so much. I know it’s a sad day, but Taehyung. I was so worried that you would have done something stupid tonight. Never go drinking alone next time,” Jimin ranted without listening to the other side.
“Are you done?” Taehyung cut off Jimin’s word. “No I am not done, I gotta smack your head with my slipper. So be prepared. And yes now I am done,” Jimin shot back.
Taehyung closed his eyes and took a breath before speaking, “can you come pick me up from sector B police station.” Taehyung wanted to close his ears, but he was too late because Jimin screamed right from the phone, and he was so loud that even the cops who passed by him, stopped to give Taehyung a wierd look.
“Po…police station, why? Tae, are.. are you.. doing drugs.. please..don’t lose to.. the dark.. side.. you’re too.. precious..” Taehyung wondered how can someone stutter and be extremely loud at the same time, but that’s just Jimin. He scoffed a little before adding, “I did something worse than doing drugs..tonight.”
The cops stopped around Taehyung to give him a examining look at the mention of drugs. Taehyung immediately stood up and bowed, assuring them, “sir, I was just joking.. my friend is being dramatic, I have never in my life done drugs.” The cops shrugged and walked past him. Once they were gone from his earshot, Taehyung again spoke but his voice held tiredness.. “Chim, just come and pick me up please, my bones hurt too much to travel to home. I’ll tell you everything once you reach, I am at the parking lot of the police station.” Jimin answered, “okay, I am on my way..”
Jimin’s voice held panic but he immediately got in action, rushing to the side table and grabbing his boyfriend’s old and rusty car keys. He spoke as he rushed to wear his long coat and shoes, “Yoongi, you go back to sleep. I have to pick tae from sector b police station.. I will be back in the early morning.”
Yoongi frowned as he asked, “sector B, what was he doing in the elite part of the town.” Jimin replied immediately, “God knows, but I have to pick him up..” Yoongi spoke with a sigh, “jimin!”
“I seriously don’t get this fcker, if he is so upset with life, just cry in your room, why go around making a mess. I am going to give him a piece of my mind once I see him,” Jimin ranted.
“Jimin!” Yoongi called out again.
“If he has one or two bone of his broken, I am going break a few more too. I was worried sick for this idiot,” Jimin spoke animatedly..
“JIMIN!” Yoongi called out a little louder. Jimin halted and stared at his boyfriend, “what?” Jimin added in a soft voice.
“You don’t know how to drive!” Yoongi added unfazed. And Jimin’s mouth agape, formed an O as realisation dawned upon him.
“Oh no. What will I do now..?” Jimin paced again in the room. “Oh wait, I have an idea, I will ask someone to drive your car for me. Let me ask our neighbour. Baby, you go back to sleep, you have a meeting with one producer in the afternoon tomorrow,” Jimin added.
“Or, I can drive my car for you? Take you to the police station to pick Taehyung?” Yoongi added as a matter of factly. Once again, Jimin’s face showed a cute expression with wide eyes and mouth wide open, as if this was a new mystery unravelled. Jimin spoke with a sheepish smile, “yeah, we can do that.. “ a giggle escaped his lips.
Soon enough, Yoongi and Jimin flopped into Yoongi’s old version of car. It wasn’t latest, needed a lot of mechanical work, but was enough for their middle class like lifestyle.
As Yoongi drove, he asked to Jimin, “so what’s the deal with Taehyung?”
Jimin sighed the nth time, and spoke with a sadder tone. “It was Taehyung’s mother’s death anniversary yesterday. He usually gets very vulnerable during his parents death and birth anniversaries. Yesterday, in particular, he was extra cranky and aggressives. So he took an early day off, I told him, I will come with him to wherever he is going. Didn’t want to leave him alone. But he said he will be okay.. but clearly he wasn’t.”
“He left from work early and went to his mother’s grave. After that he was gone drinking. The last time we spoke, he was drunk talking to me and said he will head home soon. I thought everything was okay. But clearly not! I don’t know why and how he ended up in a police station,” Jimin added..
Yoongi nodded in understanding as he concentrated on the road. Few minutes later, Yoongi sighted Taehyung at the corner of the police station’s parking lot. Taehyung’s jacket was wrapped around his neck, while bruised were clearly visible on his arms, face and Yoongi can imagine there are probably bruises on his ribs too from the way Taehyung was slouched and holding his stomach. Jimin shrieked once he sighted Taehyung, and wasted no time in getting down from the car and rushing over to his best friend. The first thing Jimin did was shove a fistful of punch at Taehyung’s arm, who groaned in pain loudly.
“Midget.. it hurts, stop it,” Taehyung spoke in pain and Jimin mumbled a sorry. Jimin helped Taehyung to the backseat of Yoongi’s car and then took the front seat. Yoongi drove out of the police station as Taehyung narrated the events of the night. Both Yoongi and Jimin stared at Taehyung with a brief numbness. What Taehyung did wasn’t just reckless but he could have lost his life if jungkook had decided to punish him for his crimes. They breathed in relief knowing that Taehyung was allowed to escape the situation.
Few minutes of silence and understanding the graveness of the situation, Jimin spoke softly while smiling at his best friend. “Jungkookshi, doesn’t sound that bad of a person as we thought of him, isn’t it?” Jimin said. Taehyung said nothing but nodded curtly, his eyes trailing outside the window.
Yoongi looked at Taehyung through the rear mirror, he can understand the turmoil between guilt and anger and pain. Taehyung was filled with a lot of emotions. So he added like the elder person among the three, “it’s okay taehyung, you weren’t in the right state of mind that time. So don’t be so hard on yourself.” Yoongi further added, “your anger with life is not wrong.”
Who knew little words, holding great meaning is all what someone needed to feel better, to feel less agitated, to feel love for life. Taehyung’s mood was slightly lifted from Yoongi’s words. Jimin smiled warmly at his boyfriend, although he was a little surprised from Yoongi who was always extra possessive whenever him and Taehyung hung out.
The silence again thickened in the car. All three thinking about life, which hasn’t been easy on them since the very beginning. All three hold struggles of their own, a tale that is mixed with pain, suffering and hunger for a good life. What was good life? Probably in this moment knowing that they have friends as family who wouldn’t leave you alone even the darkest of hour. Wasn’t this a good life? Their hearts were suddenly moistened with love for life.
Taehyung admired the night sky, filled with stars and clouds as if they all came together to sing hymns for the mighty universe. The moon flawed but shining amidst them, like a light. Unknowingly, Taehyung smiled. He felt less hatred towards the painter, he felt more grateful of having friends like Jimin and Yoongi.
Time after time, Jimin has proved to be his true friend. They have two years gap between each other, with Jimin being the elder but Taehyung was more mature and fearless among the two. Jimin though is courageous and the utmost meaning of kindness despite his own problems. Jimin helped without care and he gave anything and everything freely with a beautiful smile.
Taehyung still remembers the first time he met jimin. Four years ago, when he reached this city, Taehyung had decided to apply for a job as bartender in one of the elite club. He knew he was inexperienced because he had only worked in one local restaurant of an island, while growing up. Compared to the candidates who were highly qualified, Taehyung thought he had no chance of landing the job. But when he sat across a witty Jimin with glasses bigger than his eyes, on his smile-like face, Taehyung felt warmer for some odd reason, as if he knew Jimin before meeting him. They spoke casually, their conversations were naturally sweet and authentic. It was that time he found out Jimin was a manager in this elite restaurant. Taehyung was in awe because jimin looked quite young to be manager.
Jimin was non challant even while interviewing, sharing about his life story as if it was an open book for anyone to read. Taehyung was still awestruck when he found that Jimin was the eldest child among his seven siblings. His father who was a bus driver in a village of Gwanju, once met with an accident and eventually was bed ridden, and his mother who was homemaker was forced to work as nanny or maid in various houses to put food on the table. Jimin once he finished his study, took the bold decision of shifting to Seoul at the young age of 20. Starting years were so difficult and filled with hardship, but Jimin never gave up. He started his first better job in the elite restaurant, and worked his way up to become manager. Jimin has been with the restaurant since it opened and was among trusted employee of the owners. But every penny he earned, majority of it went for his family, and the beauty of his struggle was that Jimin wasn’t complaining. He was immensely grateful for his family, for having them. Because love bloomed beyond their poverty.
It was astonishing for Taehyung to sit in the interview room and listen to Jimin ramble words of motivation through his life story. But Taehyung was absolutely touched, because he felt like he wasn’t alone. But Taehyung’s eyes popped out when Jimin announced that he has the job at the junior level and they will monitor his work for at least six months before increasing his salary.
Taehyung had blinked not once but multiple times, staring at Jimin’s face attentively, waiting for him to crack up and call everything as joke. Jimin who suddenly felt shy being scanned like that, was disturbed when the interview room’s door opened and walked in one of the owner of the club. Jimin ouched when his forehead was flicked by the owner.
Past:
“Yaah, Jiminah.. you’re the worst interviewer ever.. this dude isn’t even experienced and you’re hiring him? What did I teach you?” The owner glared at Jimin who pouted.
“You taught me to tell every candidate that we will get back to you.. and then you and Sanduel hyung will make the selection. But I am manager, hyung. I like him. Look at his innocent face. We should give him a chance.” Jimin answered back. Both the co-owner of WWH Club, Kim Seokjin and the manager Park Jimin ignored the candidate, Kim Taehyung.
Seokjin glared and his nostrils flared. “If we hire people just because of their innocent face, then I will be poor faster than expected. Besides, I have already done that mistake by hiring you on our very first day of opening. Don’t give me more innocent faces.” He spat.
“Hyung you hired me because I was cute like mochi.. besides I am good now.. I am employee of the month. And trust me, this guy Taehyung he will bring you a lot of customer,” Jimin reasoned with the same cute pout.
“And how is that going to happen?” Seokjin asked back.
“Just trust me,” Jimin spoke firmly. Those were the words that made Seokjin hire a rookie Kim Taehyung.
And Seokjin and sanduel were shocked to say, Jimin was right. Because the number of customers increased magically multi-fold because of the new handsome bartender. Those who didn’t even like alcohol, were queued up to buy their drinks just to get a smile from their new bartender. Sanduel and Seokjin had given a hefty raise to Jimin for that. And were also impressed by taehyung’s hard work, so they made him a permanent employee after six months of probation.
And just like that Kim Taehyung had a new family.
Past Ends.
Yoongi was the next addition. Two years ago, when a struggling song writer and singer was knocking doors after doors, begging for meetings with successful producers and directors, Yoongi bumped into Jimin when one time he wanted to drink his sorrows away. Yoongi has been struggling since he was removed from his house at the age of 17, because Yoongi refused to do farming in his village for his father. Yoongi did manage to sell couple of his songs to new companies and new music labels, but the pay wasn’t great, just enough for him to survive. His initial dream was to become a star rapper with his own lyrics, but rejections after rejections, pushed him to just sell his work and earn whatever little he can to survive. Yoongi had one of those rejection moment two years ago, and that’s why his broken heart had taken him to WWH club. Jimin who stood beside Taehyung, ensuring everything was going smoothly, felt lost and hoodwinked at the sight of Yoongi.
Jimin had practically begged Taehyung to give free drinks to Yoongi who looked pale, weak and sullen. Jimin’s heart was restless. For him, it was probably love at first sight. And Jimin being Jimin, he offered Min Yoongi to make his meals every day, if he was hungry and busy. Min Yoongi was perplexed and shocked, who was this little guy with cute smile, and why was he offering him meals when he has never seen him in his life. Jimin knew he was being reckless, but he wanted too. So he wrote his phone number and address on a piece of paper and gave it to Yoongi. The piece of paper said,”you can visit or call me whenever your hungry.”
Taehyung had warned Jimin of not being so optimistic about every individual, thinking that everyone was good and deserved his goodness. Jimin had shushed him by saying, “it is what his heart wants.” And Taehyung did shut up, because he never had that feeling, doing things beyond his reach or breaking out of his shell, for anyone. He never really experienced any sort of love, forget having those love at first sight experiences. He simply hoped that Jimin doesn’t get hurt in the process.
They say, the way to someone’s heart is their stomach. In Jimin’s case, that was the truth. Because after a month of meeting min Yoongi for the first time, the struggling singer who had no money to pay his bills and food, had actually knocked at Jimin’s door one night. And that was it, min yoongi never left. Jimin fed him, bathed him, and give him warm bed to sleep. That was enough to turn Yoongi mushy and weak for Jimin. It was probably that moment when Yoongi gave up his dream of becoming a singer, but sticked to selling his songs. That way he was able to put input for himself, for Jimin and their house. The only thing Yoongi owned was his car, old and rustic, but essential for them. In six months, from being stranger to friends to roommates, Jimin proposed Yoongi at his 27th birthday, and Yoongi proposed back. They have been dating for nearly one and half year.
The only thing that flips Yoongi is when Jimin gets too touchy with his bestie Kim Taehyung. Jimin brings out all the emotions and personalities of min yoongi.
——-
“Tae.. tae..” Jimin called out.
Taehyung who was so lost in the night sky and his thoughts, blinked and finally turned his head to pay attention to Jimin. “What?” Taehyung asked.
“We’ve reached your home buddy.” Jimin smiled warmly. Taehyung nodded and asked, “do you guys want to come up?”
It was Yoongi who answered, “yeah, we should apply some medicines on your wounds. It would get infectious or else.” Taehyung’s eyes slightly widened but he immediately composed himself and nodded.
The three got down Yoongi’s car. Yoongi walked ahead, Jimin leaned to Taehyung’s ear and whispered, “I told you, my Yoongles doesn’t hate you. See he is so caring”
Taehyung smiled, and Jimin had one of those sparkly eyes whenever he is happy. The two best friends weren’t aware that min Yoongi was smiling too, but faintly.
Few minutes later, Taehyung put his key on the keyhole of his door. His house was in the attic of the building, but it was his most favorite place to be in the entire city. This house was his hard work, and he wouldn’t trade it for even a billion dollar.
(Imagine it as night time)
Taehyung sat on the couch, and Jimin hurriedly went to the bathroom to get the first aid kit for him. Yoongi stretched his arm to take the kit and started to apply ointment on taehyung’s wounds.
“You don’t feel any bone cracked right?” Yoongi asked and Taehyung shooo his head. The younger added, “No hyung, just bruises.”
“I will make coffee for all of us.” Jimin announced and walked to the kitchen, that was just beside the living area. Soon after there was a knock on Taehyung’s door and all three of them were surprised because it was too early for a visitor.
“I will get that.” Jimin announced as he wiped his hand and walked to open the door. Once he flung the door, his eyes landed on a girl, probably younger then him by three years.
“Oppa, I saw yoongi hyung’s car from my balcony. Is everything okay with Taehyung?” kim jennie, another employee of WWH club. She met Taehyung on their job, when she joined as a waitress. The two realised they were practically neighbours because Jennie stayed in the other building beside his. Since then they have been friends, and Jimin was like an elder brother to her.
“Yeah.. yeah.. your husband is fine.. don’t worry.. he just has some broken bones..”Jimin whispered with a teasing smile. Jennie first blushed but soon worry creeped on her face as she heard about taehyung’s situation. Worried, she ran past Jimin.. both Taehyung and Yoongi looked up to see a teary eyed Jimin.
“Jen? What are you doing here? At this hour” Taehyung asked.
Jennie worriedly sat beside Taehyung, her hands finding their way to Taehyung’s arm. “Tae oppa, I saw yoongi’s hyung’s car. And you weren’t answering your phone. So I couldn’t control myself. I had to check up on you.” Jennie replied while trying to check all over Taehyung’s face.
Her palms, cupped Taehyung’s cheek. The bartender winced in pain and politely pulled away from her. “I am fine Jen, you shouldn’t be here at this hour. If your father find out, he will be angry. Go back home.” Taehyung spoke strictly as his eyes locked on hers. She pouted as her eyes saddened. She looked away and turned to see Jimin.
“I will help Jimin hyung in the kitchen..” Jennie instead said and without waiting for Taehyung’s response, rushed to the kitchen. She whispered to Jimin, “oppa, Taehyung isn’t happy to see me.”
Jimin sighed and flicked her forehead as he asked her to pass him sugar. “Pabo, give sometime. You both broke up not too long, and besides your cop like father doesn’t like Taehyung, so he just doesn’t want any troubles for you or himself. Don’t be disheartened.”
Jennie was sad now. Three years ago, when she joined WWH club, she was mesmerised by the handsome Kim Taehyung who treated her just like everyone else. Taehyung rarely dated but he did have couple of dates in his life, mostly with the girls who always proposed him.
However, Jennie who found out Taehyung stayed nearby to her. She took the opportunity to befriend him, and they did become good friends. They travelled together for work, they hang out like friends. It took Jennie almost two years to finally admit to Taehyung that she likes him and would be happy if they dated. That time Taehyung who went through a lonely phase, didn’t think much but decided to give a chance to relationship with Jennie. However, few months into their dating, Jennie was unbearable. She was insecure, highly jealous, and highly possessive which was hampering Taehyung’s work. Because Jennie would suddenly flip or throw something at a random customer who simply just complimented Taehyung for his godly looks.
Taehyung was always a simple man. He doesn’t want toxicity in his life so he broke up with her three months ago. Taehyung tried to make Jennie understand that she was better as his friend than his girlfriend. And it took time, but she admitted she was getting toxic. And eventually they decided to be just friends, but Jennie always shared her hearts desire with Jimin. And it was only him who was aware that Jennie was still hopeful to get back together with Taehyung.l
Another reason for break up was Jennie’s father who once saw his daughter get down taehyung’s bike and give him a kiss. The father daughter fought a lot that night and eventually Jennie was bruised. Her father isn’t the best of fathers in the world. After her mother’s death, her father who is a small local cop, took the demise worst than expected. There was a phase of intense alcoholism, and her father had lashed out his anger on her many times. But with Jennie growing up to become her own independent woman, her father realised his mistake and promised to never do bad to her again, to be a good father. And hence, he we extra protective of who his daughter dated.
When Taehyung found out the truth from Jennie about why her father disliked him. He eventually knew that their relationship was going way too faster, and he wasn’t even sure if he was in love with Jennie. Everything was happening too soon and Taehyung wasn’t ready for commitment, his main focus in his life is to create a strong future. So they broke up. But Jennie is still hopeful, however, she pretends to be the most supportive friend as much she can.
“Don’t think too much sissy, Taehyung just wants what’s best for you,” Jimin spoke further but Jennie wasn’t convinced.
She spoke ahead, “why doesn’t he see my love for him?” She whined. Jimin sighed yet again, “because love isn’t something he is looking for right now. He is hungry for stable future, he doesn’t want to be a bartender all his life, he is saving to open his own liquor brand. You know about his dreams.”
Jennie half-heartedly nodded. The duo went back to the couch. The four of them chatted for few minutes until they finished their coffee. It was already dawn and sun was ready to embrace them. Eventually, the yoonmin couple and Jennie bid their goodbyes to Taehyung. Jimin told him to not come to work and that he will make an excuse to Seokjin for his absence.
