Silent Waves
Sweet Taste Cafe
"Lily, the customers are increasing. Would you mind giving us your hands for while?" a woman who looked around thirty called out for the person.
"Of course, I don't mind at all." A young woman replied. But can you get me a uniform? I can't serve the customers wearing jeans and T-shirts, can I?"
"Okay. I'll get you uniform. What's your size, by the way?" she asked.
Lillian Frost told her the size she wore and the waitress went to get it for her. She always thought that serving the customers was a simple job. But then, she realized it was very far from true. Especially, when the number of customers increased. While serving one customer, another would order. It was a busy day.
"Lily, would you please come and get these coffees?" Sarah, the girl in charge of the counter called out.
"Coming" She shouted out and headed for counter. She was sure nobody would mind her shouting as it was quite noisy there. She went to the counter and put the coffee in the tray. She turned back and crashed on something warm. Before she could think of a thing, a shout of anger came.
"What the hell!!!"
Beckett Levingston was in the Sweet Taste Cafe near Cohen University with his gangs. He met them three years ago in the university and became very close to them now.
"It's clearly not just an accident. There's something more to it." Harry said.
The gang was discussing on what happened the day before. One of their friends, Nichole, was in his car when another car dashed towards it and hit it. They were to go meet him in the hospital after having their lunch and also take him some sweet from the cafe with them. He loved the sweets from the cafe.
"That's exactly my thought. And the person drove away without even stopping for once." Mike agreed to his friend.
Everyone was giving his own comment. Everyone except Beckett. His focused was reserved totally for the waitress who had caught his attention the moment he entered the cafe. He had never seen her in the cafe before and he was a regular customer.
'A newbie?' He thought.
He watched her as she was serving them. Being a player, he had seen many types of girls. The only type of girl he didn't to talk with was the introverted nerds. He didn't know why, but he felt some vibe from her. he just could point out what it was, but he felt something was interesting about the girl. It was clear that the glasses has no lense. How did he know?
Many woman wear glasses with no lense just to look good. But none he met tried turn themselves to a nerd like her. Maybe he just want to know what is hidden behind those glasses and fringes. Otherwise, she seemed to be no special. Her figures are okay. And thoes legs of hers.....not bad...
He chucked as he saw her dashing towards the counter and then back to the customers. She was like a bunny. A Little Bunny. Unknown to Beckett, his behaviour was gaining him some weird looks from his five companions, which he noticed only when he turned to them.
"What?" He asked.
"Nothing. Just wondering what made out Master Beckett laugh." Evan teased with his wiggling eyebrows.
"I was not laughing." Beckett defended himself.
"Yeah yeah." Evan scoffed.
Beckett decided to ignore his friends.
"I think we should leave." Lewis said, always the calm one.
"Yeah." All of them agreed.
"I'll pay the bill." Beckett said as he stood up and walked towards the counter. He saw the girl he was interested in besides the counter. He began to walk up to her. He was only a few steps from seeing her face clearly when he felt a crash, followed by burning sensation on his chest. For a second, he was confused. But the strain on his suit and the white shirt and the burning sensation told him what might have happened.
"What the hell!!!"
Lillian stared at his chest and froze for a few seconds. Her eyes went wide.
"Oh my god! I am so sorry"
She began to wipe his chest with a tissue from the counter. It was of no use. The only thing she did was add fuel to his anger.
"Put your hands off me." He yelled. Again.
Lillian flinched. Beckett wouldn't have yelled if not for the fact that she had poured the coffee on him and burnt his skin. He usually kept his cool all the time . But at the moment, he was blinded by his anger to make himself look cool. He would have felt sorry when he saw her scared face. 'Why should I when she's the one who caused all these? '
"I am so sorry. I can clean it... if it helps. "
He looked at her with a sign of disbelief. '*What about the white shirt? Like the stain will come off. *'
"Are you out of your mind? There's no way this strain is gonna be washed off. The shirt's going straight to the garbage bag now because of you." He yelled at her, pointing his finger at him .
"Then I'll pay for it." She replied.
"Pay for it?" Beckett laughed at this, sarcastically.
"Do you even know how much does it cost? Wait a minute. How will you know? You're just a waitress in this cafe. A person who lives from hand to mouth.
Well, let me enlighten you a little. The shirt here cost more than the sum of all the salaries you get for a whole year. Now tell me. How will you pay that much amount?" He asked mockingly.
Lillian was starting to get angry. Yes she was at fault for not being aware of her surroundings. But he didn't need to show the difference between their lifestyle like that.
She opened her mouth to give a reply but Beckett crossed her before she could even say a word .
"Leave it. Do you even have eyes? Where were you looking? What's the use of wearing glasses when you can't even see a person?"
Beckett knew he was being an asshole 'But what can you do when your chest is burning because of someone's clumsiness .Well. What can you expect from a girl who can't even see properly that she had to use glasses?'
What Beckett was expecting was for her to run away like a typical emotional girl with teary eyes bla bla bla. But what he saw was totally the opposite of what he expected.
A glare that promised a 'Six Feet under the Sea' burial.
She looked like she was trying hard to control anger. So different from what she looked like before. She was no more the nerdy girl with thick glasses. She closed her eyes for a few seconds. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. Then she looked into his eyes. He could see an imaginary fire burning in her eyes.
"Sorry Sir, that I don't have eyes at the back of my head to see who was coming towards me from the back.
OK. Let's say that it was my fault. Let's say that this happened only because I was clumsy, as you say . But where were you're looking when you came towards the counter. Aren't you the one who should be called a blind? Cause you didn't even see me who was in front if you...." She said.
Beckett could only stare blankly. It was a huge blow to his pride. It's the first time a woman have ever talked to him in such a rude way.
"....For a person who gives comments on one's ability to see, you sure don't have one.....Sir."
Blood were boiling inside his veins by then. Her words were like missiles. Their eyes were shooting bullets at each other, as if they were planning to kill each other there. As if they were having a cold war like the States and Russia. Such a great bond.
"You little_"
Beckett was about to give her a piece of his mind, or so he thought, when Harry called out for him .
"Beck. What are you doing still doing there? Let's go to the hospital. NOW!!!"
'Shit. I completely forgot about it'. Glaring at her, accusing it was her fault. He walked up to her so that he was only 2 inches away from her. He could feel her breath on his neck. It somehow turned him on.
Locking away his odd feelings deep inside, he leaned down to her ear and whispered,
"This is not over."
He could feel her shiver and he was very satisfied with her reaction. After that he left with Harry to go to the hospital.
Once all the commotion in the cafe was over, everything went fine. But Lillian was still thinking about that arrogant self-centered, egoistic handsome jerk..... 'Hey!! Where did the last part come from?' She let out a tired sigh.
"Okay.....I admit that he's good looking. But still, he's also a jerk. A big jerk with capital J. I know that it was because of my unawareness of my surroundings but still he doesn't have the right to insult me. And what blind. He's the one that's blind. His whole family is blind." She talked to herself.
That gained a weird look from a teen boy who was walking near her. She saw the way he looked at her. As if she said Osama bin Linden was still alive.
"What? Have you never seen a girl talking to herself?", she snapped.
To her dismay the boy shook his head no, very innocently.
"Well. Make it the first." Saying that, Lillian walked faster to reach home sooner.
She couldn't trust herself when it came to matter like embarrassing herself. If she stayed longer, she knew she would do it again. All she needed was a long warm bath to relieve her stress.
She walked into her house that not too big nor too small. Just perfect for four. One master bedroom, two other bedrooms, a guest room, a living room, a not so big kitchen, a dining room, and 2 bathrooms. Guess it's still big for four.
Lillian's father owned the cafe. Business was good. But in the last few months, they have been having problems. Mr. Frost borrowed money from Mr. Martini to start the cafe and some more when Mrs. Frost needed heart transplantation. They had a meeting today in a restaurant regarding the payment of the money.
She was about to reach the stairs when she heard a warm voice greeting her.
"Good evening Lily. How was your day in the cafe? "
She turned to her left to see a man in his middle age, sitting on the couch with a warm smile.
"Good evening to you too Uncle Frost. It was tiring but still fine in the cafe. The cafe was quite busy today. "
"Hmm. Thanks for taking my place there. Lily. I could concentrate in the meeting because you were there. The staffs always tend to do something troublesome." He said, making Lily remember of the incident earlier that day.
She was the one to cause trouble today. She waited for a while before she asked,
"I'll go freshen up. Then we can have dinner. I am starving."
He chuckled hearing that. Lily is the one with great appetite in the family.
"Hurry up. You know how your aunt becomes when you are late for dinner. We don't want to face a She-Wolf, do we? ". He whispered, thinking that his wife couldn't hear it , or so he thought. A shout came from the kitchen,
"I can hear that, you know."
"I didn't say anything "he yelled back faking some innocence.
Lillian chuckled at their silly behaviors. She gave him a kiss on the cheek and ran up the stairs
"Go. I have something to discuss with you later."
