Brendans P.O.V.
After she told me she had no trust left in this world, honestly even though she embarrassed me so badly, I have to wonder who hurt her like this.
“I’m sorry, please don’t leave yet. I didn’t mean to push you.”
“Thank you, you didn’t push me, this is just my reality now. On top of that we’ve had our dinner you’ve apologized, we’re completely even. If you’ll be kind enough to take me home now I’d appreciate it.”
Her eyes are so gloomy. Her beautiful deep green eyes that are so captivating, now hold a dark sadness. Wait, beautiful eyes, sad, what do I care? She’s just a bet to prove she’s as shallow as the rest of the women I know.
“If it’s all right since we’re already out, I’d like to take you to a place. It’s a beautiful place with a seaside view you’ll love it.”
I could see her ears perk up at seaside view. But then she had a contemplative look on her face.
“You’re not this creepy rich guy out burying high school kids and you want to show me you’re collection right?”
“If I was why would I show someone who obviously hates me?”
“I don’t know maybe I’m next and this was like a final meal?”
“Aren’t you too old to be a high school student?”
She glares at me. “Aren’t you too emotionally unequipped to act like this?”
“Wow such a sweet talker. I’ll bet you have guys lined up out the door for a chance with you.”
“Oh I do, in fact I could have been out with someone who is much better looking than you , taller, and genuinely nice. I had to work but now that I know Chloe would have let me off I should have accepted. Who knows when I will get such a chance again.”
For someone reason her with another guy irritates me. Better looking? Taller? Genuinely nice? Now I have to make you fall for me.
“That may be, but you’re out with me right now so clearly I’m the winner.”
“Fine, take me to your spot then we can be done.” It takes a little over half an hour to get there, but her face when she sees it was definitely worth the trip.
“I’ve never seen such a beautiful sky in my life it’s so clear and beautiful!” She has this wonderful smile on her face.
I’m still staring at her when I say, “Yes, extremely beautiful.”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For this night and this view. I may not have wanted to be with you, but I won’t regret this night.”
“Mm.” It’s all I can say. How clueless is she? A man is trying to woo you and you respond with I love everything about this except you? She is insane!
We sit on the hood of the car silently just watching the night sky. It’s already been twenty minutes but I know she’s enjoying it so I don’t mind. I can’t quite put my finger on it but for some reason I am somewhat attracted to this woman. Is it her aloofness? The thrill of the chase? I’m unsure. One thing is clear though, bet or no bet, I want her. Maybe if I’ve been with her I can get it out of my system. That must be it. I’ve always gotten what I’ve wanted it’s just a new challenge for me, and when that’s over I’ll be back to my old self unaffected by her.
“We should probably head back. Chloe might be worried.”
“Okay, I’ll take you.”
I drop her back home and walk her to the apartment door above the pub. I need to think of something to see her again.
“I know you said you can’t trust anybody, that the world has only hurt you. I’d like to be your friend though and show you even more to love about life and get you out of your shell.”
She pauses looking down, a slight frown on her face.
“I, I will, try. I will try to be your friend and open up. If you hurt me however, I will cast you away and have you suffer the same pain.”
“I promise.”
“Fine then, goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
I walk back down to my car. Thinking about her reaction to first seeing the car puts a stupid grin on my face. I frown then. Get it together Brendan, once you get her you’re done.
I get home and Nick is waiting.
“So, did she spray you again?”
I glare at him, “No actually. We had dinner and went to the usual spot, and she agreed to see me again. I told you this would be easy.”
“Hmm.”
“What?”
“Well, I had her investigated and honestly Brendan, I think we should call off the bet.”
“Ha! Scared because I’ve already been successful and now you’ll lose the bet?”
“No Brendan, any embarrassment from losing that bet would be nothing compared to what she’s been through.” He looks extremely guilty for a moment I almost believe him.
“Yeah whatever, I’m still doing this. Her past doesn’t matter to me. It’s just a prize to be had.”
Nick sighs then and hands me a black folder. “You should read this and be mentally prepared for when you do.” He leaves then.
Whatever just a trick to make me lose the bet. Anything inside is probably faked. I throw the file in my desk in the office and forget about it. Why bother? I won’t let pity change my mind anyway.
Time to come up with a new plan of attack.
