Melissa
It was already late when I decided to call my cousin. We hadn't talked in days.
She picked up fast.
"HI, TINA."
I practically shouted it when she answered.
"Hi, gorgeous. Nice of you to remember I exist."
"Don't be like that. I miss you like crazy, you witch. I wish you were here with me right now."
She went quiet.
"Not gonna say anything, cousin?"
"Did you fight with that idiot again?"
I let out a long breath and told her everything that had happened.
"That's what it was, cousin. All of that just because I said I wanted to go to that show with you and Juliano. I feel so awful. It's been years since I've even gone out for a drink like we used to back in college."
"Cousin, that guy doesn't deserve you. Whatever he tells you, you could have any man you wanted. You're beautiful, smart, and still a virgin, for God's sake."
"Ooh, watch your mouth. Haha."
"But it's true. Any real man would go crazy for you, girl. Come to Rio Verde — I'll introduce you to some hot agroboys out here."
I laughed and said, "Don't let your agroboy hear that. You're something else, cousin."
"My agroboy is right here next to me and he's sending you a hug."
"Send another one back. I miss you guys so much. I really want to be at that show. It's going to be incredible. All of Goiânia's going to shake — and I'll be the only one missing."
I said that last part with a sad little laugh.
"Relax, cousin. There's still time. Between now and then, you'll sort yourself out. Kick that boy to the curb and let's go."
"Oh, cousin, it's so good talking to you. You're one of a kind in my life. Kisses. Go enjoy your husband. Have a great night."
"Kisses, cousin. Miss you. Love you, girl."
I ended the call and nearly jumped out of my skin when I looked up. I'd been so caught up lying on the sofa that I hadn't heard Eliezer come in or noticed him standing there.
"Hey — have you been there long?"
I asked, a little embarrassed, since I'd had the call on speaker.
"Long enough to know your cousin fills your head with ideas against me."
"Come on, Eliezer, don't start. I'm tired. What are you doing here? We haven't spoken in days."
"I came to ask your forgiveness. I lost control that day — I'd had too much to drink."
The same old excuse. Too much to drink.
I looked at him and didn't say a word. I got up from the sofa.
"You're just going to leave me standing here?"
"Go home, Eliezer. I don't want anything more from you and you're not welcome here."
"You're dismissing me, Melissa? What's your reason for that?"
"You've got the nerve to ask. My father doesn't want you here and neither do I. People are right — I deserve so much better than this. I'm done letting you put me down."
He came at me hard and grabbed me, trying to force a kiss.
"Let go of me. I don't want anything to do with you anymore. I don't need someone who tears me down."
He raised his hand to hit me — and then I heard a deep voice from the doorway.
"IS THERE A PROBLEM HERE, MA'AM?"
I looked toward the door. A man stood there, watching me with intense eyes.
