Chapter 4: The Lion's Den

The corridor seemed to stretch on forever, the showcase pieces blurring together as my mind wandered. I was lost in thought, wondering what lay beyond the grand doors where the family head held court. The scent of incense and old books wafted through the air, and I caught a glimpse of a priceless vase on a nearby pedestal. Suddenly, a deep voice boomed, "What's taking you so long?" Dr. Gramps nudged me forward, his voice low, "Let's go, Master."

As the doors swung open, I was met with a sea of expectant faces. A man with black hair, dressed in noble attire adorned with intricate silver embroidery, stood on the podium, his piercing blue eyes seeming to bore into my soul. Below him, two young men in their early twenties conversed in hushed tones – one with a chiseled jaw and piercing brown eyes, the other with a lazy grin and unruly hair.

To the right, a girl with blonde hair and green eyes stared at me, a confident smile playing on her lips – Velvet, I assumed. Beside her stood Sofie, her eyes darting nervously between me and the podium.

The hall was filled with nobles in opulent attire, their faces a mix of curiosity and disdain. I took a deep breath, sizing up the situation. As we entered, the doors closed behind us, and the man on the podium turned to face me. His black hair and blue eyes were a striking match for the body I inhabited. He wore the noble attire with an air of authority, a paper in his hand.

The hall fell silent, and Dr. Gramps broke the stillness, "We greet Your Majesty." I echoed his words, feeling the weight of everyone's gaze upon me. The head nodded, "You may rise."

As I stood, our eyes met, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. He asked the blond girl for a report, and she handed him a file, a smirk playing on her lips. I had a bad feeling about this.

A noble with a pinched face spoke up, "Your Majesty, you must reconsider your decision. This child is good for nothing, even if she is your daughter. She lacks the qualities of a true leader. You should choose Miss Velvet instead – she's perfect for the role."

The other nobles nodded in agreement, and I bit my tongue, listening to their discussion. One of the young lords spoke out, "Now a servant's telling his master what's right or wrong? Hmph, Mr... I think you've got the nerve to question His Majesty's decision."

The noble fell silent, and Velvet spoke up, her voice sweet but laced with venom, "Young Master, I think Mr... didn't say anything wrong. We're in a precarious situation, and ignoring warnings will have consequences."

The second young master sneered, "Hmph, Ms. Velvet, it's like after achieving some small feat, you're already questioning and challenging our father's level."

The girl's face paled, and she bowed, "No, no, Your Majesty, I wouldn't dare."

The head of the family remained silent, moving towards me with an air of authority. I felt a surge of fear – he was intimidating.

Why was he coming closer?

What should I do?

Stay calm...?
