Chapter 6: “Blades of Betrayal”

The temple air was thick with silence. Tannie’s words hung between them like a sword.

“It was you…”

The Protector—whose real name still remained unknown—lowered his eyes. “I didn’t know what they planned. I was only a boy. I thought… I was protecting you.”

Tannie’s legs trembled. The memories, the pain, the betrayal—it was too much.

“I trusted you…” she whispered, her voice cracking.

And then—her eyes rolled back. Her body gave in.

“Tannie!” Kane rushed forward, catching her as she fainted. He held her close, brushing her hair from her face. “You pushed her too far,” he snapped at the Protector.

“I didn’t mean—” The Protector looked shaken. “She’s remembering too fast.”

---

Later… in the quiet

Tannie slowly opened her eyes, now lying on soft grass beneath a tree. Kane sat beside her, still watching her closely.

“You’re safe,” he whispered. “I promise, I’ll never let anyone hurt you again.”

She smiled weakly. “You’re always here… Thank you.”

But from the shadows—danger stirred.

---

A sudden attack

A masked figure leapt from the trees—a blade glinting in the moonlight. He aimed straight for Kane.

“Tannie! Behind you—!” the Protector shouted.

The world slowed.

Tannie turned—and saw the dagger aimed for Kane’s heart.

Without thinking, she moved.

“NO!!”

She shoved Kane aside and the blade plunged deep—into her side.

The attacker’s eyes widened. Blood stained Tannie’s dress.

“Tannie!” Kane screamed.

The villain vanished into the shadows before either boy could move.

Tannie gasped, falling into Kane’s arms again. Her fingers gripped his shirt, trembling.

“You idiot!” Kane’s voice cracked. “Why would you do that?!”

She smiled faintly, tears in her eyes. “Because… I didn’t want to lose you too…”

And then—her eyes fluttered shut. Her body went limp.

“She’s losing blood fast!” Kane shouted, panicked.

The Protector tore off his cloak, pressing it to the wound. “We need to heal her. Now.”

---

In the darkness of unconsciousness…

Tannie floated again, the voices of both boys calling her back. But far away, a deeper voice whispered…

“You used your heart as a shield… again. You’ll break unless you learn to use your power fully.”

Tannie reached into the light. “I’ll protect them. Even if it hurts.”

The light wrapped around her—and her aura flickered brighter than ever before.

Chapter 7: Hearts that Shine

Tannie awoke to soft whispers and warm sunlight.

She was resting in a small cottage, bandaged and safe. Kane was asleep in a chair beside her bed, his hand still wrapped around hers.

When she moved slightly, he stirred. “Tannie… you’re awake.” His voice cracked with relief.

She gave him a tired smile. “You stayed?”

“Always.”

Their eyes met—and for the first time, there was nothing between them but unspoken truth. Gently, he leaned in, brushing his lips against her forehead.

“I thought I’d lost you.”

“You didn’t,” she whispered. “Not this time.”

---

But peace was never easy

Just days later, as they traveled deeper into the mountains to search for the source of Tannie’s power, an ancient seal broke. From it emerged the villain—a man known only as Kyōmaru, once a guardian of light turned corrupt.

“Give her to me,” he sneered, eyes locked on Tannie. “She’s the key to immortality.”

Tannie stepped forward, her aura glowing. “I’m not yours to take.”

Power burst from her body—too fast, too heavy. Her knees gave out again. She fainted in Kane’s arms, glowing with raw magic.

“She’s still not ready,” the Protector said grimly. “But she’s the only one who can seal him again.”

---

Later, that night

Tannie woke again under the stars, Kane’s face above hers. He was crying.

“I hate seeing you like this… hurting yourself for everyone else.”

She cupped his cheek. “It’s who I am. But I don’t want to do it alone.”

Their lips met in a soft, trembling kiss—fragile but full of emotion. She leaned into him, her fingers in his hair.

From the shadows, the Protector watched quietly. But this time, no jealousy remained. Only acceptance.

---

The Final Battle

Tannie faced Kyōmaru once more. The wind howled, energy crackled.

She unleashed all her power—heart and soul. The seal lit up again. She screamed—and collapsed, fainting from the force of it all.

But this time, her power remained.

Kyōmaru was sealed forever.

That night, after the battle, the stars sparkled above the quiet hill where they rested. Kane sat beside Tannie, brushing her hair back as she lay in his lap, still recovering.

“You scared me again,” he whispered. “I can’t keep watching you fall like that.”

Tannie looked up at him, eyes soft. “Then don’t watch—catch me instead.”

Kane’s breath caught. Slowly, he leaned down. Their lips touched—a gentle, slow kiss, full of aching love. Her hand slid into his hair, pulling him closer as the kiss deepened.

“Tannie…” he murmured against her lips.

“Stay,” she whispered. “Just for tonight… stay with me.”

He kissed her again, this time longer. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and they sank into the moment—two hearts finding peace in each other’s arms.

---

Later… the candlelight faded

Wrapped in blankets, Tannie rested her head on Kane’s bare shoulder. He traced patterns on her back with his fingers, eyes full of warmth.

“I don’t care where this journey leads,” he said. “As long as it’s with you.”

She smiled sleepily. “It always was. Even before I knew it.”

They fell asleep under the stars, close and content, as the world exhaled around them.

The fire crackled softly in the quiet cabin. Moonlight spilled through the window, casting silver light on the floor.

Tannie and Kane sat close, her fingers playing with the edges of his shirt. She looked up at him, her voice barely a whisper.

“You’ve always protected me. But tonight... I don’t want to be just protected.”

Kane’s breath hitched. “Tannie...”

“I want to feel alive—with you.”

He cupped her face gently, searching her eyes for any hesitation. Finding none, he leaned in and kissed her—slowly, deeply.

One kiss became another, and another. Their fingers found each other, and piece by piece, the distance melted away.

---

Moments Later...

Wrapped in each other’s arms beneath soft blankets, their silhouettes moved gently under the fading candlelight. No words—just the rhythm of two hearts beating in sync.

Tannie rested her head against Kane’s chest, eyes full of peace. He held her tightly, as if afraid she might disappear.

“You’re safe,” he whispered. “With me. Always.”

She smiled sleepily. “Then let’s stay like this... just for a little longer.”

Their hands remained entwined as sleep slowly took them—warm, safe, and loved.
