My Island Princess

"Please follow me" Dr. Martin said as he led Rose and Mary to the morgue. "These are all the corpses from yesterday" he opened the door to a cold, dull room with two corpses laid on different stretchers placed in the middle of the room. "Please identify the corpse you're looking for." Dr. Martin uncovered the faces of both corpses.

"He's not here." Rose said in a wobbly voice as a teardrop escaped her left eye. Could Cathan have left her forever.

"Thank you Doctor. Sorry for wasting your time" Mary said as she pushed the wheel chair, Rose sat on out of the room. "Let's go home Rose"

Later that evening, Rose sat on her bed. She had cried so much that she had run out of tears. She just stared blankly at the wall, thoughts and memories racing through her mind. She looked down at the letter that laid beside her, wondering what the contents may be. "Is it good news? Will it hurt me? Is he still alive?" She thought to herself as she stared at the envelope.

She sighed as she picked up the envelope and opened it to reveal a letter and it read:

My darling Rose,

If you're reading this, you must have heard about my death already. The truth is I'm not dead yet. I have heart cancer and I've had it for a very long time. The doctor said that I was dying each day and I have a limited time to live. I'm sorry that I didn't tell you this before but I didn't want you to worry about me then I would have never seen your sweet smile again. I faked my death dear Rose and I'm sorry it was on our big day, the day we waited for for so long. I didn't want you to be a widow a few days after our wedding. By now, I'm already in what was supposed to be our matrimonial home in Ontario. That's where I want to spend my last days. It hurts me that you're not here but I can't spend my last days with an unhappy island princess. I remember the first day I met you, you were so cute and vulnerable like my little sister. She was also an island princess like you. I felt I had to protect you cause I didn't want to lose her again. In three days, I'm gonna see her again in heaven. I truly love you my darling but remember that I'll never leave you. I'd always be in your memories and in your heart. I left all my wealth and assets to you even though they are barely enough to fill the void in your heart. My body would be in our bedroom in three days. Please, don't come before then. I really don't wanna see you sad before I die yet my only regret would be not seeing your face with me on my death bed. Sweet Ro, Don't live a lonely life after I die. Try to find someone who is almost as good as me cause I'm the best me. Live your life to the fullest Ro and I'll always be with you. I love you.

Rose's face was frozen with shock. If she had any tears left, they would be pouring out freely. Her hand dropped and the letter slipped out. The words replayed in her mind. Honestly, she would have taken the next flight to Ontario but he was right, she would ruin everything for him. She really didn't know what to do and froze on the spot. The door was gently opened and Mary walked in with a cup of chamomile tea and sugar placed on a tray.

"Rose, I brought you some cha..." She stopped in her words as she saw her daughter frozen with shock and a piece of paper beside her. She dropped the tray on the dressing table and rushed towards Rose.

"Rose, what's wrong?"

"H...he...he's still alive"

"Thank the good Lord!How did you find out??"

"The letter"

Mary picked up the letter and read it.

"I better go book tickets for Ontario then"

Mary said as she walked out of the room.

Rose felt helpless. The love of her life was dying and she couldn't even do anything even as a doctor. She couldn't even be there with him during his last days because of her soft heart.

"That's it. I can't be vulnerable anymore. I can't be weak. I have to be strong for Cathan. I won't cry anymore" She thought to herself.
