Unknown Number

It had been a day since she read the letter. Rose sat in her room without food, praying for a miracle. Just at that moment, her phone rang. It was an unknown number.

"Hello"

"Get dressed and come out"

"What?! Who is this??"

"Come to the balcony and find out"

That voice was so familiar but she couldn't remember. She lazily crawled out of the bed and opened the sliding doors that led to the balcony.

"Ellis??"

"Get dressed and come out"

"Why??Where are you taking me??"

"Just get dressed. It's about Cathan."

Maybe Cathan wasn't going to die after all or he was back in town. This was her chance to find out what was going on. She rushed into the room, placing her hand on any piece of clothing she could find as she wore her hair in a loose bun.

The sound of wheels crushing asphalt mixed with the echoes of car horns on the unusually uncrowded roads. Silence filled the car for the first few minutes before Rose asked,

"So how do you know Cathan?"

A devilish smirk appeared on his face as he took a glance at Rose's eyes that were solely focused on him before looking back at the road.

"I don't, I read the letter."

"So why did you take me out of my house?"

He took his left hand of the steering wheel and flick her forehead.

"Hey! What was that for?"

"That was for making me lose a million dollars contract"

"How?"

"Because of your carelessness, I had to sleep in a hospital and missed my meeting with my clients. What kind of an adult doesn't know how to cross the road?"

Rose's expression changed, lowering her head in sadness. She felt a touch on her shoulder.

"You must really miss him?"

"Yeah...It has been really hard for me"

"Look I know I just met you but I understand how you feel. Losing the love of your life isn't easy. You have to go through so many pains but you always have to remember, he's in your heart. He's not gone. He has accepted that and you have to too."

Rose stared up at Ellis. His devilish expression had turned into a pained but sympathetic one. He actually knew how she felt and Rose had a sense of comfort around him.

"Honestly, I'm really confused. A letter?Cancer? I never imagined that Cathan would be dying in another part of the world while I'm here brooding over him. I feel so helpless because even if I go to him, I can't save him and I can't bear to see him in that kind of pain. He loved and protected me. He always stood up for him. I'm just so weak-minded. I hate myself. It's all my fault for not being there for him."

Rose broke down into tears.

"He always protected me but I could never do the same. I was easily intimidated and weak. I couldn't anything for the one I love. It feels like I'm losing a part of me."

The car came to a brief stop. He looked at Rose, her face buried in her hands as she sobbed uncontrollably.

"Rose look at me"

He placed a gently took her hand as he dried her tears.

"It's not your fault. Life can just be really cruel. Besides, we never know when a miracle can happen. One essential thing in life is hope. You always have to hope because it gets you to so many places. He won't die. I can assure you that but you just have to hope.

Silence filled the air as their gazes focused on each other. The word, 'Hope' echoing in Rose's mind.

"Ahem!...We're here"

Ellis let go of Rose's hand, his devilish, mature expression back on his face.

"My house?!"

"Yes"

"But I thought we were going somewhere?"

"I only wanted to get you out of your house to clear your mind since it must have been really tough on you"

Rose really didn't understand but as she was grateful as he helped her get a lot of her chest.

"Thank You so much. You really helped a lot"

Rose said as she came out of the car.

"Look left and right before you enter your house"

"I will"

Rose walked in and shut the door.

"What just happened?" Ellis thought to himself. He hadn't felt this way since Bianca. A lot of women threw themselves at the famous Ellis Zacson but this one didn't even know who he was.

"Rose Phillips, you're really something"

He whispered to himself, smiling, as he drove away.
