"Isaac."
I whisper his name in shock. Every instinct in my body goes on high alert.
"There must have been a mistake. The omega who passed along the message told me the Alpha was waiting for me. I'm sorry to disturb you — she must have gotten confused and delivered the wrong message."
I try to take a step backward, intending to get out of that place as quickly as possible, but he stops me.
"She delivered the right message. Am I not also your Alpha?"
"Of course — yes. Yes, you are."
I watch those pale eyes of his brighten and know the danger behind every word he speaks. I avoid meeting his gaze again.
"Come closer."
I keep my head down, searching for a way out of the room.
"What do you want? I should go — tonight is not the night for a she-wolf to be away from her quarters."
I speak to the tall man in front of me. He has a firm bearing and a powerful build, much like his father, only in a younger version. Isaac is twenty-two years old, the most coveted male in the pack. His looks draw sighs from every she-wolf here, but never from me. His cold, cruel manner strips every bit of beauty from him, in my opinion.
"Why are you always so defensive? Do you think you're in danger, Sara? Do you think some wolf would try something with you?"
He uses my name — something he hasn't done in years — and it makes me look up at him for a second. I can see his eyes brighten even more.
"No — not in that sense. I mean the effect of the full moon. Wolves tend to get a bit aggressive."
"Yes, they do."
He circles me and positions himself behind me. I feel him exhale, drawing in my scent, and he makes a low sound under his breath. I don't dare move. My body goes rigid when I feel a large, strong hand pull my waist back against him.
"You don't even have pheromones. How could you attract anyone?"
"Please, Alpha — let me go."
I dare to ask.
"Why don't you like this? Even without wolf pheromones, your scent is good, Sara. I'd never stopped to notice before."
Revulsion rises in me at the feel of his hands on my body.
"But things have changed. I've been watching you for days, Sara. You've become beautiful — your body, even as thin as it is, is very attractive."
What he's saying makes no sense. I try to pull free of his grip. It must be the full moon's effect.
"Stop struggling. I called you here to tell you something."
He pulls me tighter against him, then whispers in my ear.
"From now on you'll be mine, Sara. I want you as a lover — warming my bed, the way the others do."
He releases me and turns to face me. I process what he said, incredulous. It's an absolute outrage.
"What?"
"You heard me. I want you as my lover. Plenty of women would be thrilled to have the opportunity you're being offered right now, and you don't even look grateful."
I answer quickly.
"No."
"What do you mean, no? You really think you'll get another chance like this?"
The ego on this man is staggering.
"I am not your object!"
"But as your Alpha I can compel you. What value do you have? A she-wolf without a spirit should be grateful to me for granting her this privilege."
I can see the full moon's effects beginning to take hold of him. He's restless, and his voice is starting to change. What he's saying is an outrage. I would never lower myself to so little. I would rather go on living the way I do than accept this so-called "privilege" — just being an object for the Alpha's gratification.
Suddenly, Isaac shuts the door to the great hall, and my chest tightens at what might come next.
We're locked in here alone, just the two of us. My mind races through everything a wild, aggressive, heat-driven wolf might try to do to me.
