STRANGER BOY

STRANGER BOY

Chapter 1: The Kidnapping Of Charles Hugo

FLASHBACK

Flames engulfed a house in Hamlet, Indiana, 1975. A young boy, clutching his baby sister tightly, stood amidst the chaos. The air was thick with smoke, and the child's cries mingled with the pandemonium of the neighborhood. Firefighters arrived, sirens blaring through the night, but it was a mysterious figure who intervened first, rescuing the unnamed boy and his infant sister from the burning wreckage just before the structure gave way.

PRESENT

Charles Hugo, Iz, Owen, and Apollo gathered in the Browns' dimly lit basement, immersed in their tabletop role-playing game, Trog. Apollo donned the chilling role of the GRABBER, a notorious serial killer, catching Charles off guard.

"Apollo! Now you're a dead man," Charles declared in a spooky tone, prompting a round of laughter that echoed off the concrete walls.

The joy was interrupted as Owen's mother, Chelsea, appeared at the top of the stairs. "Okay, kids, time's up." The boys reluctantly began to pack away their dice and character sheets, their youthful fervor momentarily restrained by the reality of the late hour.

Charles turned to Iz, his expression turning somber. "Iz, let's go."

Iz hesitated, glancing toward Owen for a heartbeat before looking back. "You go, I'll catch up." Charles's face fell, but he gave a sharp nod and left the basement with Apollo.

FLASHBACK

A boy trudged home, his eyes swollen and red from crying, his small shoulders slumped in despair. His mother enveloped him in a tight, desperate hug, her warm embrace acting as a fragile comfort against the terror that gripped him. "One day it will be over," she whispered softly, her voice trembling with a mix of reassurance and sorrow, trying to calm the haunting fear in his eyes.

The darkness had swallowed him whole that day. He had gone out to play football with the other children in the fading light of dusk, laughing and kicking the ball with reckless joy. Then, panic seized him as he vanished. A black van with tinted windows cruised silently down the deserted street, its doors opening like a gaping maw. The boy was yanked into the shadows, his screams muffled by a gloved hand, his heart pounding in gut-wrenching terror. The vehicle's tires screeched, leaving behind a trail of dread and a neighborhood paralyzed by fear.

PRESENT

Apollo and Charles pedaled their bicycles back home through the quiet evening streets. The warm Hamlet night air carried the sweet scent of blooming flowers, a stark contrast to the heavy thoughts in Charles's head. Apollo glanced at his friend, noticing his furrowed brow.

"Why do you look so gloomy, man?"

Charles replied with a slight pout, "I don't see why Iz spends too much time with Owen. I think it's wrong."

Apollo chuckled, a mischievous spark in his eyes. "Of course not—she's his girlfriend."

Charles's face twisted in a mix of confusion and hurt. "Said who?"

"Them, of course," Apollo grinned confidently. He braked in front of his house, the gate creaked open with a familiar sigh. "See you tomorrow, lady!"

They burst into laughter, breaking the tension. Charles smiled weakly, calling back, "Night kiss, girl!" He pedaled away, the shadows of the trees dancing on the street behind him.

Back at the Browns' house, Maria slipped out the door like a ghost. Owen caught sight of her from the basement window, his expression curious and a bit amused.

"I'll tell Mom about her," Owen teased.

Iz shot him a playful warning look. "No, just let her be."

Owen grinned mischievously. "Okay, just for you."

Out on the road, Charles pedaled furiously through the lane gate toward his house. His heart began to race as a van suddenly started to tail him. Panic gripped him; he sped up, his legs pumping hard, but he lost control and crashed onto the pavement. The van screeched to a halt beside him, and in a heart-stopping instant, he was snatched away by an unknown figure, vanishing into the shadows.

In the basement, Iz suddenly trembled with a jolt of fear. Her body shuddered as a sharp anxiety clawed at her. Owen rushed to her side, concern etched on his face.

"Hey, what's wrong?"

Iz clung to him in a tight hug, forcing herself to breathe. Her chest heaved as she tried to explain the inexplicable. "I don't know... I have this awful feeling like something's terribly wrong."

Owen's eyes widened in surprise. "I have to go now," Iz said urgently. She grabbed her jacket and darted out of the house, leaving Owen looking utterly bewildered in the middle of the room.

FLASHBACK

The boy burst into the house, a jubilant grin plastered on his face, and wrapped his mother in a sudden, celebratory hug. She looked taken aback by his sudden excitement.

"Why is my son so happy?"

The boy beamed with an eager grin, his eyes bright. "Mom, it's my time now!"
