Chapter 5: The College Fest Chaos
The college campus buzzed that Friday morning. Banners, fairy lights, and stalls were everywhere. Music filled the air, and students ran about wearing colorful ID cards and excited smiles.
It was finally Fest Week.
Sia could barely contain her excitement. She had been waiting for this all semester: a whole weekend of events, laughter, and no lectures. But most of all, she wanted to know one thing: Would Aarav actually show up to have fun?
When she spotted him near the main stage, holding a clipboard, her mouth dropped open. “Wait. You’re volunteering?” she asked as she walked over.
He looked up, his expression calm as always. “Someone had to manage the technicals.”
She laughed. “Of course. You join the fest just to fix wires.”
“Someone has to make sure your ‘fun’ doesn’t cause a fire,” he replied dryly.
“You really know how to kill the vibe,” she teased, then grinned. “But you look good doing it.”
For a moment, his eyes met hers—steady, unreadable—before he looked away, pretending to check something on his clipboard. “Focus, Sia. You have your fashion event in an hour.”
By noon, the fest was in full swing. Music competitions, food stalls, laughter—everything felt electric. Sia and her best friend Riya helped backstage with outfits and makeup.
But Sia couldn’t stop glancing at the crowd, hoping to spot him. She didn’t even realize he was standing right there, near the lights, quietly watching her as she adjusted her dupatta.
When her turn came, Sia walked on stage—nervous but smiling. The crowd cheered. When her eyes found Aarav’s in the audience, something shifted inside her. His usual serious gaze softened, and she swore she saw him smile.
For a second, everything else disappeared.
When she stepped off the stage, Riya nudged her. “Girl, did you see him? The way he looked at you?”
“Shut up,” Sia said, blushing. “He was just… probably thinking about the lighting angles.”
Riya grinned. “Sure, lighting. His eyes were practically writing poetry.”
Later that evening, the fest hosted a surprise couple game on stage. The host’s voice echoed, “We need one more pair!”
Before Sia could move, Riya pushed her forward. “Sia and Aarav!”
“What?!” Sia yelped.
But the crowd was already cheering. Aarav gave her a look—half annoyed, half amused—then sighed. “Fine. Let’s get this over with.”
They stood together on stage, and the host explained, “Each pair must answer how well they know each other. The most in-sync duo wins!”
Sia folded her arms. “We’re doomed.”
“Confidence,” Aarav murmured. “Try it.”
The first question: What’s your partner’s favorite color?
Sia whispered, “Black. Obviously.”
At the same moment, Aarav said, “Yellow.”
They blinked at each other.
“Yellow?” he asked.
“You give off dark academia vibes, Aarav. Who even likes yellow?”
He smirked. “Apparently, you do.”
Next question: Describe your partner in one word.
Sia didn’t hesitate. “Annoying.”
Aarav said at the same time, “Sunshine.”
The crowd oohed, and Sia froze, her cheeks turning pink. “W-What did you just—”
He shrugged casually. “Seemed accurate.”
The host laughed. “Looks like we have chemistry here!”
In the end, they didn’t win, but everyone agreed they were the most entertaining pair. As they walked offstage, Sia nudged him. “Sunshine, huh?”
He looked at her with that small, dangerous smile. “You make people notice you—even me.”
Her heart stumbled.
As night fell, fairy lights flickered all around. The music softened, and the crowd thinned. Sia sat on a bench near the main lawn, sipping soda, when Aarav appeared beside her.
“Hey,” he said quietly.
She smiled. “Hey, Mr. Sunshine Expert.”
He chuckled. “You were good today.”
“Only today?” she teased.
“You’re always good. Just… especially today.”
Sia looked at him, surprised by the warmth in his tone. The confident Aarav who never flinched was now… shy?
“Why do you look at me like that sometimes?” she asked suddenly.
He didn’t look away. “Because when I do, the noise fades.”
Her heart skipped. The fest lights glowed around them, as if the world itself was holding its breath.
“Careful,” she whispered. “You’re starting to sound romantic.”
He smiled faintly. “Maybe I am.”
A soft wind brushed past them. For the first time since they’d met, neither joked, teased, nor ran away. They just sat there—quiet, close, and perfectly still.
Sia’s mind spun, but her heart felt clear. Maybe this wasn’t chaos. Maybe it was the calm before something beautiful.
