Heeseung was utterly stunned, unable to process the words he had just heard. Shock washed over him like a storm, leaving him completely frozen in place. It felt as though time itself had stopped around him, his mind refusing to accept the painful truth.
Suzy looked at him nervously before gently patting his shoulder.
“H-Hey… Heeseung, it’s okay,” she said softly. “I know this is a lot for you to take in…”
Seeing the expression on his face made her feel guilty.
“But… she’s happy now—”
The moment those words left her mouth, Heeseung looked even more shattered.
Suzy instantly panicked.
“Huh?! H-Heeseung?! I didn’t mean to hurt you! I mean— wait— what am I even saying right now?!” she blurted out in frustration. “Look, Heeseung! This is kind of your fault too! You should’ve taken the first step earlier! Hmph!”
Comforting sensitive people was clearly not her strongest skill.
Heeseung suddenly interrupted her.
“No… it’s okay,” he said with a forced smile.
He avoided eye contact completely, his eyes already red from holding back tears. His fists were clenched tightly beside him, as if he was trying to keep himself together.
Suzy’s expression softened.
“You don’t have to force yourself to smile, Heeseung,” she said quietly.
She continued, her voice softer this time, yet every word struck deeply.
“Things happen because of the choices we make, Heeseung. You hesitated. You were confused about your own feelings. You were insecure about yourself, and you always let others make decisions for you. And the worst part is… you agreed to everything so easily.”
Heeseung remained silent, his gaze fixed on the floor.
“That’s not how life works, Hee,” she said firmly. “You need to stand up for yourself, even if it’s something small. Even if it means hurting someone else’s feelings sometimes. If you keep suppressing what you truly want, you’ll only end up hurting yourself more.”
She paused for a moment before continuing.
“You need to understand your own heart first. Be honest with yourself, Heeseung. Ask yourself what you really want instead of living according to everyone else’s expectations.”
Her expression slowly softened with guilt.
“I know I’m probably the last person who should be saying all this,” she admitted quietly. “After all, I’m here helpless too… unable to fix my own situation.”
She let out a bitter laugh before lowering her eyes.
“But at least my reasons were understandable.”
“Because my reasons were connected to the people I love,” she said with a faint smile. “My parents… I just can’t bring myself to hurt them.”
Her eyes softened as she spoke.
“I used to be so rebellious, always doing whatever I wanted without caring about anyone’s opinion. But when it comes to the people I truly love…” she paused, lowering her gaze, “it doesn’t feel like I’m sacrificing anything anymore. It just feels like… agreeing for their happiness.”
For a brief moment, silence filled the room.
Then the small smile on her face slowly faded into sadness.
“And there’s one more person…” she whispered. “Someone who always agrees with me no matter what. Someone who always puts me first, loves me unconditionally, and somehow manages to stay by my side every single time.”
Her voice trembled.
“In every situation… he’s always there for me.”
Tears slowly rolled down her cheeks as she forced herself to continue.
“He loves me more than anything in this world. He even hates chocolates, but still pretends to like them just because I love them…”
Her words cracked near the end, and she quickly looked away, trying to hide her tears.
“He—”
“Hey, hey…” Heeseung immediately moved closer to her.
Without hesitation, he gently pulled her into his arms, hugging her tightly as if trying to comfort all the pain she had been hiding.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered painfully. “I’m so useless that because of me, you’re suffering too.”
His grip around her tightened slightly.
“I’m the worst.”
