Arin sprinted through the dark forest, lungs burning, mind spinning. Behind him, the distant glow of his burning farmhouse flickered like a nightmare that refused to fade. Every branch he brushed felt sharper, every step heavier. And through it all, the mask on his face whispered.
“Host… danger approaching… follow my guidance.”
Arin didn’t understand it, but he obeyed. He leaped over a root just as a blade whistled past his neck.
A tall man emerged from the shadows, wearing a cracked porcelain mask. His voice was cold enough to freeze Arin’s breath.
“Return the artifact.”
Arin backed away. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
“You touched it,” the hunter hissed. “Now it belongs to you.”
The mask pulsed, and a strange warmth shot through Arin’s right arm.
“Energy surge activated.”
Arin gasped as blue light flickered under his skin.
The hunter’s eyes widened. “It awakened already? Impossible.”
Before he could attack, a sharp whistle cut through the night—
THWIP!
An arrow planted itself beside the hunter’s ear.
A girl dropped from a tree branch like a shadow come alive. She landed between Arin and the hunter, bow drawn, eyes burning with confidence.
“Back off, mask-boy.”
The hunter vanished into the darkness.
Arin stared at the girl. She was around his age, with short hair, forest gear, and a smirk that looked like she was used to saving people who didn’t ask for help.
“My name’s Lira,” she said. “And you’re in trouble.”
Before Arin could respond, another figure stepped out—a huge man carrying a hammer the size of a small tree.
“Lira,” he said calmly, “more Hunters approaching.”
Arin stepped back. “Who are you people? Why are you helping me?”
Lira walked toward him but paused when the mask on his face shifted and whispered again.
“Allies detected.”
She raised an eyebrow. “It spoke to you?”
Arin nodded, trembling. “Yes.”
Lira and the giant exchanged a look—worried, surprised, scared.
“This just got worse,” she muttered.
The giant placed a massive hand on Arin’s shoulder. “I am Bram. Lira talks too much. I do not. But we will protect you.”
But the forest suddenly shivered.
Leaves rustled.
Branches snapped.
Footsteps—many of them—closed in.
Shadows moved between the trees. More masked hunters. Dozens.
Lira drew a glowing red arrow. “They found us.”
Bram lifted his hammer. “We cannot outrun them.”
Arin’s heartbeat synced with the mask’s pulses. He felt something new—a force rising inside him, wild yet controlled.
“Can I fight?” Arin whispered.
The mask answered, voice deep and echoing.
“You can. And you must.”
Lira stepped in front of him. “Arin, listen to me. If the mask truly awakened, then you’re the key to something bigger than all of us.”
Bram nodded. “And the Hunters know it.”
The circle of masked enemies closed tighter.
Arin clenched his fists as blue energy coursed through him.
“I’m not running anymore.”
And with that, the first battle of his new life began.
